Palworld - Everything you have ever wanted from a Pokemon game

So what are the pros and cons of this game? I've been in the mood to play a survival game, I thought I would just do Vintage Story again, but if this game is actually good I might just buy it. It's already entertained me with all the seething it's produced thats for sure.
Expanding on what @instant said.

Maybes:
  • Survival elements become pointless once you pass the early game. Just load up on jam on toast jam filled buns, dump it in the feed bag, and forget about for a couple of hours.
  • The mid game grind for ores is tedious and they're used for almost everything it seems. I suspect it might be an oversight.
  • Joining a world creates a new character that is only used in that world. On the plus side this reduces exploits, on the down side this reduces trading. If I have two rare Xs and a friend has two rare Ys, we can't really trade.
    • This also leads to constant restarts, or being perpetually useless. It's common for people to mount their pals and ride off to a boss fight while one person sprints along with a wooden club only to catch up after the fight is finished and everyone is running back.
  • I disagree that co-op is the focus. The game plays well on single player, but has some weird quirks. Like you only get XP from working pals and pals will only mine ore while you're within a certain range of your base.
    • There are lots of servers to play on, but the ones I've been invited too all use retarded rules like dropping the XP rate so it's impossible to catch up, or players do dumb things like stealing worthwhile pals from their own guild bases.
  • It's early access, so as others have said, parts of the game are clearly unfinished or unrefined.
Cons:
  • It's a long time until you get to guns.
    • And when you do, you'll still be sticking to bows/crossbows for a while due to grinding for ammo.
  • You've got to rebind the controls. Having dodge on ctrl is a pain.
  • There's a fair bit of micromanagement going on. eg. If you have a base farming ores, and a base farming food, you have to keep teleporting back and forth to refill feeders or bring ores to a furnace.

I like it, and I'm not normally into these kinds of games.

Cons:
  • It's a long time until you get to guns.
    • And when you do, you'll still be sticking to bows/crossbows for a while due to grinding for ammo.
Small addendum to this: it takes a while for you the player to get guns, but there’s a handful of early Pals who’s special ability is to wield a gun, and you can unlock that pretty early on.

if you explore a bit, you can get schematics for guns way before you're actually able to unlock them, and there's merchants who sell ammo, so it's not all that bad if you get lucky
Oh yeah, I’ve been raiding Syndicate bases specifically to collect as much ammo as I can.

I should have probably been a bit more specific. The mid-game grind for ores felt more like an incentive to play co-op to me. I think most people, even players who mostly ignored enhancing their weight limit, ought to be able to collect at least 1 deposit's worth of ores when exploring. Just by having 2 players drop their ores whenever they restock, both are likely to end up with more than enough ingots to break past the mid-game slowdown relatively naturally. If ores had a quarry facility like rocks did, I think there ends up being too few chances for a team to regroup or pitch in for some kind of shared resource.

It might be a leap in logic, but the handful of times I had the chance to play co-op with a friend, that's what it felt like to me.

To be fair, all temporal AA works like that, regardless of engine.
Temporal AA is (simplified) just retaining some of the last few rendered frames and mixes them together with the current frame to smooth out the picture and reduce Aliasing. Doing it this is way less performance intensive than other AA methods and it looks pretty good on static or slowly moving scenes.
Its just that this "mixing with old frames" generally happens to the entire image and that causes motion blur.
TAA is ass cancer and I hope whoever invented it dies of ass cancer.

Okay then, I think after putting 53.8 hours into this game, I can make a statement as to my enjoyment of Palworld.

Just to preface this, I have been on a steady hype train for Palworld for the last couple of years since the first set of trailers released for it. Mostly for the novelty of the premise that the devs put forth, and also because at that point I have become more or less disillusioned/disinterested in my primary monster franchise of Pokemon up to that point, having not really played meaningfully since the first Black & White games.

Even from just the trailers, you could tell the game was almost certainly going to have some level of jank to it, and I was prepared to write the game off as just another piece of shovelware that was trying to tap into the monster cash cow. But I was hoping against hope that perhaps that if the game was modicum good, it would satisfy that little itch that Pokemon never has been able to scratch since the switch to 3D.

When the game launched, I bit the bullet and took the $30 plunge, and got started.

I am happy to report thus far, I am satisfied with the game.

That being said however, there is still room for improvement. A lot of room to be frank.

With my last survival game being Valheim, it doesn't take long to spot the imperfections that tarnishes the game's exterior, but that's to be expected for an early access game of this nature. Due to my frugal purchasing habits, unlike others in the thread that have burned hot and hard on the genre, I don't find myself minding these flaws, even going into the tedious midgame. Even knowing the reputation of the devs with regards to not finishing off Craftopia, at $30, I can't really complain to much, especially seeing as games double or more that price come out in an abysmal state of being, whereas Palworld in contrast plays decently enough.

Performance however is... Questionable. My rig isn't the most powerful out there, but the game chugs at medium settings, and on the highest becomes noticeably irritating to play with, often dropping into the 20s to 15s, sometimes even worse. For the sake of the game, I am going to assume this is due to shit optimization, and hopefully will be addressed come the next few patches, or failing that, *someone* getting a good mod fix in.

Going back to the Valheim comparisons, my most recent construction project in the game has met with some difficulty. While it ultimately completed to my satisfaction, the devs need to put into some work regarding both the construction set for building stuff, and dealing with AI pathfinding for your pals.

To be frank, you *need* to plan your base with the poor AI pathfinding in mind, lest you find your pals getting themselves stuck in a feedback loop and starving themselves to death by getting stuck on some geometry. The bigger pals suffer this the most, being apparent when building up my second base in the game somewhere south west of the map where all those ores are located at. It isn't uncommon sight to see my digitoise stuck on top of the ores, or on other pieces of geometry within the base itself. Often this calls for either recalling said mons and spawning them back in, or removing the offending piece of geometry to address the issue.

Again, it's early days, so hopefully either a patch or modfix will come and help remedy the issue.

Moving on to the construction set, it's fairly basic. Nothing to write home about. There's a couple funky issues as echoed by others in the thread, most notably when building angled rooftops. I often find I need to build up a floor below it in order to get it placed correctly, otherwise it does not register.

And then there are these corner spots that quite frankly, could have been solved with the angle piece that you can find easily in Valheim.
20240127193248_1.jpg

This building took me around thirty to forty minutes to construct, being around three floors high and about 8-10 pieces at its widest. Were this to be done in Valheim, I could have probably been done in half that time.

It's a little irritating, but nothing to write home about otherwise.

As for the monster hunting itself, I found it fun and fairly challenging, even with some hiccups due to issues not of my own.
Again, the geometry and AI for your buddies comes into play here. More than once I have been fucked over by a pillar that was *supposed* to block a projectile attack, only for a projectile to phase through and utterly dumpster me. I have since learned to compensate for this, but it's still an irritation when the terrain does not function the way you want it to.

Regarding your friendly AI, my most recent boss hunt on the water with jormuntide ended with my pals floudering about doing fuckall both on land and in the water, even with my dedicated water mons. Even on land, something with the AI was acting funky, but I managed to preveil in the end.

---

Overall, I say despite all these difficulties, I found the main gameplay loop to be enjoyable enough, if only to scratch that itch Pokemon likely never will. The designs, despite many of them being blatant ripoffs, are also enjoyable enough, and the little things such as your pals relaxing in the hotsprings are nice enough to look at. It's nice, seeing your pals doing their work, or just taking a nice hot break in the springs that you have constructed for them, such as with this wixen here.

Or this pussycat.

Or your reliable dinos doing the good work that needs to be done to keep the base heated and fed. I find these dinossoms, plus their quadruped cousins in the game to be an improvement loosely based on the meganium they are based on, even if the former apes more the goodra line than anything else.

(No baldies here. They have a very swish and stylish head flower, thank you very much.)

I don't have a GIF on me, but just seeing these two relax in the springs enjoying themselves is a nice sight to behold.
Also, I got very lucky in the early-mid game and scored myself a fire serpent dragon.

Well, when he isn't burning down the boxes of course, but otherwise dependable.

As far as my first week impressions go, the game definitely needs work. But if the devs keep at it, there could have something quite good on their hands. There are other recent releases, such as the Enshrouded which appear to be more polished and probably would have won this month's indie darling award were it not for the media frenzy current going on with Palword right now, but I am content with what I have right now. As far as taking out my early access virgintiy is concerned, there are far worse games I could have spent it on.

Tl;dr, the game needs work, but what it has right now sets up for a promising future if the devs play their cards right and aren't compelete malicous, incompetent dipshits. If nothing else, I hope it lights a fire under Gamefreak's and the Pokemon Company's asses to actually improve and iterate worth a damn on their games and monster designs. Lord knows I really don't care for what they've been putting out from Aloha forward, seeing as Palworld at least has the excuse of not having lore to justify their designs and aesthetics one way or the other.

And hopefully, as far as the inevitable fandom for this game is concerned, beyond the furrybait and porn that has already come and more to come, I hope just as with Pokemon, there will be some decent fan stuff to keep my occupied going forward.

Give me your fan art. Give me your fanfiction. Give me your passion however it may come, I just hope the creative kiwis in this thread are not opposed to sharing the wonders of their heart's imagination. Best I can do on my end is post some wholesome screenshot here and there.

I honestly feel a little sorry for the Enshrouded guys. If they had launched pretty much at any other time, they'd probably be getting a lot more attention. It's not a bad game, from what I've seen.

Oh indeed. It looks to be an excellent up in coming game, and from what little I have looked into, it appears to have addressed and remedy some of the common pitfalls of the genre, such as the tedium of resource gathering in the mid-late game. If I have not blown my thirty dollar load on Palworld, I probably would have gotten this game...

Actually, why not? I still have some cash to burn, might as well show the love and spare a thirty for these guys too. I am somewhat reluctant to double down on early access games due to their "outstanding" reputation for going to shit later down the line, but the game looks decent enough and well polished.

If only it were on GOG, seems like it fit right in there.

I think there are a couple of other decent game that have released this month, plus some decent monster games I have yet to touch such as Cassette Beasts that seem decent enough that I might need to take a closer look into. I just wanted to get through my backlog of games first. It's smaller than most, only being some 200 odd games on Steam, versus the mind boggling 500s, 800s, or even thousands that some others seem to own. Granted, many of those are legacy games I already own on disc, but for one reason or another refuse to work on modern machines, so I bite the bullet and bite the Steam versions on sale, but still.

Regardless, if it is good enough, someone should start a thread for the game, or perhaps share a post every now and then here, even if it may not be strictly appropriate.

That was a very succinct reply, exactly what I was hoping for. From taking a quick glance at the game, it looks different but fun, I like the combination of survival with more in depth base management. Might have to give this game a go.
there's also https://store.steampowered.com/app/1203620/Enshrouded/
release got completely overshadowed.

not meant as a shill post, just posting it in case anyone wants to check it out.

EDIT: should read the thread before posting

as someone with such an extensive library, most of it is from bundles. why pay 20 bucks for a single game when you can wait a few months and get it + 5-10 others for the same price? plus some of the money still gets around, it's not like indies make a lot of dosh to begin with.
I also don't really have a backlog anymore, if I'm done with a game I browse my own library instead what's up on steam, then pick one that might look interesting. also helps saving money, by the time there's a game I'm interested in it will be in a bundle (then goto 1).

How long until either (A) Nintendo launches a DMCA against this thing or (B) they release their own severely watered down version of this thing? Because this is quote unquote the dream Pokemon MMO that nerds wanted for 10+ years and here it is.
Pokemon released thier version of this several years ago. It was called Arceus. It sold 14 mil. And then SWSh came out shortly after and are the second highest selling games, taking everything Arceus did and adding gyms. They’ve even got the making your mons do jobs to get resources. That’s what might actually get them pissed. Not that someone beat them to it but that they didn’t and people are claiming they did. However for the same reason it is much more likely they won’t care. Because they released what people wanted, it sold gangbusters despite the outcry and they did this before PalWorld

I like Arceus a lot, probably the only good Pokemon game since Black & White. It is not comparable to Palworld except that they both contain large worlds you have to traverse with the help of monsters. They are completely different genres, Arceus had no survival elements and the combat was an even more simplified version of Pokemon. Gamefreak should be mad at themselves because they got a crystal clear message that people wanted Legend of Pokemon: Breath of the Wild and then they released more utter crap with Pokemon Scarlet and Violet instead.

Arceus had no survival elements
Pokemon could kill you and you would drop resources upon death. Pokemon could attack trees and rocks to get resources.

The comment I was replying to was asking when Pokemon would release their own watered down version in response to Pal World. My response is they released their watered down versions before Pal World even came out. 3 times in fact. PLA, SWSH and SV and it paid off. Only think SV lacks is putting your Pokemon to work and I don’t know ehy when SWSH had it.
and then they released more utter crap with Pokemon Scarlet and Violet instead.
People did all go ‘Legends good now do that with Gyms’ which is what they they got.

But yes your right, they should have ignored what people were asking for. No argument from me there. After Arceus the old formula was played out. And honestly I think it was going to be the second the went full console open world. Cause in that enviroment I am not sure how good a turn based system would work.

I think you're confusing SWSH for SV, SWSH was released in 2019 and PLA was released in 2022.
They’ve even got the making your mons do jobs to get resources. That’s what might actually get them pissed.
This is shaky at best, SV's Let's Go feature functions more as a walkable autobattler with an added resource collecting feature that's it's largely optional outside of a few evos . Palworld's way of handling it involves resource generating, item crafting, building construction, and more but restricts it to your bases for the most part.
Only think SV lacks is putting your Pokemon to work and I don’t know ehy when SWSH had it.
Because AFAIK no one really used 'em, Poké Jobs were a completely pointless feature where the benefits of doing them are handled better in other areas of the game like Dynamax Raids.
Gamefreak should be mad at themselves because they got a crystal clear message that people wanted Legend of Pokemon: Breath of the Wild and then they released more utter crap with Pokemon Scarlet and Violet instead.
If you're expecting Game Freak, Creatures Inc. ,The Pokémon Company, and Nintendo to actually go through with changing Pokémon's formula that drastically in a proper mainline game (and not a "mainline-in-theory" game like LGPE and PLA) then you should probably forget it ever happening.

As much as I like PLA I think it would do terribly as a proper mainline game with multiplayer support, it was very alienating to a fair amount of people in Pokémon's casual (yes, some people complained about the catch mechanics here) and competitive circuits (just look at how many people complained about Hisuian Ursaluna's, Enamorus's, and Sneasler's exclusivity). Combine that with a pointless battle gimmick that is Strong/Agile Style and the changes made to how turns work in battle and it's just really messy.

SV is a decent halfway point between the two styles, it's just a damn shame that it's barely functional performance-wise.

@Archeops: Yeah def confusing the two. Don’t remember there being that big of a gap between SWSH and PLA

And my point on resources is probably shaky considering they removed jobs from 7-8 true. But my point was the game would have moreorless had everything Pal World did otherwise.

Yeah your probably right, frame rate issues really hurt SV. The sky clipping out of reality while flying is always funny though. But god I hope that is fixed by Gen 10. But considering it will likely be on Switch 2, I worry it will not.
