So what you're telling me is even as the netherlands i should state in Africa rather than tc literally everything? so i can make even more money?
The ideal provinces to TC have:
- Centres of Trade [a few areas around the world have 2 CoTs per area.
- Estuaries (not as powerful as CoTs, but still a significant trade power advantage compared to provinces without any modifiers.
Trade company provinces offer a tradeoff of less manpower, sailors, land force limit, tax income, gold income and government reform progress [based on average autonomy for all owned provinces]; for an increase in trade power, naval force limit [even on inland provinces], production income [usually but not always], no religious penalties for TC provinces, an additional merchant once your total provincial trade power in a node is 51%+ of the total T.P., and a goods produced bonus for all non-TC provinces in a node, that increases when new institutions are unlocked. With all or nearly all provinces in a trade node in a TC, this bonus will be very small or non-existent, leading to a loss of income.
In other words, in every trade node you should have a decent balance of TCs and states, keeping in mind that you can have one or the other. Territories with no TC or states have little to no benefits, and should be avoided unless government capacity is very low.
On regions outside of your core areas (like Africa from the point of view of Europeans), one only needs to capture 2/3rds or more CoTs/estuaries to get your free merchant and a decent goods produced bonus. AI nations will turn nearly every province outside of their subcontinents into TCs, which will lead to a loss of income if they start encroaching in yout TCs. Expel them, or take the states for yourself.
EDIT: case study: Constantinople trade node (for Byzantium and the Ottomoids).
The Constantinople node is located in the
Balkans and
Anatolia regions (both in the Eastern Europe and the Levant
subcontintents). So a nation with a capital in the province of Constantinople will be able to TC Anatolia, and Anatolia regions will be able to TC the Balkans. But Anatolia has more TCs than the Balkans, so it is the superior TC region.
I'm not ingame, but from the province lists in the wiki, one could convert the areas of Aydin, Çuzukova, Hüdavedingar and Karadeniz into TCs, leaving the rest as states [Ankara and the Aegean Archipelago can be used as emergency TCs if the 51% T.P. threshold is not reached].
