I don't know about the emptiness of the mainland US, or the little desert "highway" provinces, particularly in Egypt.
Besides it being only state people, it’s still wrong because most of the Deep South was blanketed in classic Neolithic chiefdoms. Hierarchical societies. Would be rendered as states elsewhere in the world. They collapsed like Cahokia did; the melange that formed from it became the Muskogee/Creek. Knights of Spain, Warriors of the Sun is a good book on De Soto’s South.

I will start killing Swedes if tribes aren’t playable.

So what you're telling me is even as the netherlands i should state in Africa rather than tc literally everything? so i can make even more money?
The ideal provinces to TC have:
  1. Centres of Trade [a few areas around the world have 2 CoTs per area.
  2. Estuaries (not as powerful as CoTs, but still a significant trade power advantage compared to provinces without any modifiers.
Trade company provinces offer a tradeoff of less manpower, sailors, land force limit, tax income, gold income and government reform progress [based on average autonomy for all owned provinces]; for an increase in trade power, naval force limit [even on inland provinces], production income [usually but not always], no religious penalties for TC provinces, an additional merchant once your total provincial trade power in a node is 51%+ of the total T.P., and a goods produced bonus for all non-TC provinces in a node, that increases when new institutions are unlocked. With all or nearly all provinces in a trade node in a TC, this bonus will be very small or non-existent, leading to a loss of income.
In other words, in every trade node you should have a decent balance of TCs and states, keeping in mind that you can have one or the other. Territories with no TC or states have little to no benefits, and should be avoided unless government capacity is very low.
On regions outside of your core areas (like Africa from the point of view of Europeans), one only needs to capture 2/3rds or more CoTs/estuaries to get your free merchant and a decent goods produced bonus. AI nations will turn nearly every province outside of their subcontinents into TCs, which will lead to a loss of income if they start encroaching in yout TCs. Expel them, or take the states for yourself.

EDIT: case study: Constantinople trade node (for Byzantium and the Ottomoids).
The Constantinople node is located in the Balkans and Anatolia regions (both in the Eastern Europe and the Levant subcontintents). So a nation with a capital in the province of Constantinople will be able to TC Anatolia, and Anatolia regions will be able to TC the Balkans. But Anatolia has more TCs than the Balkans, so it is the superior TC region.
I'm not ingame, but from the province lists in the wiki, one could convert the areas of Aydin, Çuzukova, Hüdavedingar and Karadeniz into TCs, leaving the rest as states [Ankara and the Aegean Archipelago can be used as emergency TCs if the 51% T.P. threshold is not reached].

I wouldn't be surprised if they caved and added the city-states of the SE complex in a later update, but they seem to be going for a minimalist approach to populations and states in the Americas. They did finally as SoPs to the PNW finally in the most recent map update.

What @byuuWasTaken said is correct, I will just once again reiterate, that buff to goods produced scales off comparing provincial trade power in the Company states, to provincial trade power outside of companies.

So, not only you maximize provincial trade power of TCs with the company investment building, marketplaces and trade centres, but you also should decrease it outside of TCs, by downgrading centres of trade and demolishing marketplaces.

Trade Companies are so ridiculously OP that you can easily have 80 ducats of income as Muscovy by 1500, by moving your capital to Scandinavia (western europe) and then creating TCs in eastern Europe. And that's amateur hour, I've seen bahmani runs that had 500 income by 1500.

Video covering the funniest EU5 bugs in its development builds:
  • England will accidentally win the 100 Years War through France being prone to civil wars making it not exist for a single day in the game between demands being enforced by the rebellion and France flipping over, triggering a win condition of France not existing. This is bad for England since it removes the situation mechanics for England to expand into France through multiple mechanics. England wins and gets nothing. Has been fixed now.
  • Broken conditions for the starting government reforms for China allowed for any country with a capital province in Asia to adopt it, and the AI all loved to switch over to it.
  • Everyone would get a claim on the throne of Provence. After the starting ruler dies there are like 900 claimants to the throne all over Europe. Crusader Kings moment lmao.
  • Elephants are a trade good produced by RGOs, ivory is produced with a building in the province. While a usual RGO would employ 1k pops per level, an elephant hunting building would employ 10k while an elephant tile would only have a couple thousand pops. This would result in cities getting emptied as everyone migrated to rural provinces to fulfil the buildings, which would never get filled resulting in demand not being ever filled and prices remaining high. Most likely just a typo.
  • "Exploration is haram". Alcohol is a good required for explorations (real), Islam prohibits alcohol production and consumption in EU5. Ergo Muslim markets couldn't get explorations going because their explorations still require it but they can't even import it.

Now this is the sort of autistic bug I'm here for.

They should add alcohol as a morale recovery feature after long marches and battles, but if you get attacked while your army still is drunk you get BTFOd. Also add a "act retarded and drunk" mode like HERACLIVS did against the Persians to cheese the AI.

I haven't played Stellaris in several years. I've heard that the game has had multiple patches that basically amount to total reworks but I don't know the details. Currently feeling an urge to play it again. I don't own any DLC; should I get some? Or try a subscription, assuming they offer one.

Just be aware that, despite them ripping out the old pop system in the name of performance, performance is currently worse than 3.14.

Neither, given the current state of the game you should use CreamAPI to pirate it to see what, if anything, you are willing to spend money on.
