Question for those who watch more Paradox youtubers than I do - is Rosencrutz any good? He seems to get decent views but I've not watched a single one of his (presumably) video essays because the titles just give me massive 'I couldn't cut it as a regular Breadtuber' vibes.

I don’t watch rosencrutz, but he is probably bread-tuber aligned.

I vaguely remember watching a couple of his videos, he is Breadtuber adjacent.

Got myself EU5 for Christmas. God, does this game chug.

After a week of learning the absolute basics and experimenting (read: save-scumming), I am a few hours into my first proper run, as Montferrat. Annexed some OPMs, joined a coalition against Milan, and fought a war against Savoy and Aragon which cost me 90% of my peasant levies in the first 35 years...

Only to get myself into a Personal Union with Savoy.

I want out. Any ideas on what to do?

You can flip the script on them, if you get stronger than Savoy you can become the senior partner then work your way through the union mechanic to integrate them. Just keep blobbing and farming prestige and you'll be alright, but if you really want out I wouldn't know how to help.

FYI: This could appear because of the "Auto Rebar" or Resizable Bar itself not being enabled in your BIOS. I already have the recommended gigabytes of RAM this game demands so and it pops up the same message but with '5888MB', instead of '495MB' in your case rather. I turned it on and the message disappeared, but there wasn't really any noticeable difference before and after, as the game already ran perfectly fine, so it's a more of an pesky annoying message that you can't turn off, rather than itself being any real indicator of some sort.
This is the only instance that happened to me so far, as going from other graphically-demanding games, I didn't need to dig-in through BIOS just to remove an "Hardware checker" message.

Which is really funny, given that this happens in a map-painting game out of all, and not some triple AAA based on an bloated, poorly-optimized game engine.

A gathering of recent EU5 news:

Johan published a 1.1 roadmap
Gameplay

New diplomatic abilities to transfer one of your subjects to another country, ways to destroy defensive leagues and transferring territories between two of your subjects.

Annexation speeds will now depend on your diplomatic spending, and countries can now reject Hegemony demands.

The Code systems for Religion has been reworked so you can now reform away from doom.

Colonial Charters will be reworked so instead of going to a certain percentage of your dominant culture/religion of pops, it now keeps track of how many pops you have sent etc, so you can get minorities in your colonies.

Abilities to provoke rebels to start an uprising now, and ability to change your cultures opinion of other cultures on your own. Speaking of rebels, “tiny” revolts will no longer form a new country and start an entire war, but instead impact the location they would have spawned in, when they reach 100%.

The game will also allow countries to get bonuses (or penalties) to how they are impacted by proximity in certain topographies. Ie, Austria gets some mountain/hills/plateau bonuses.

We added Coin Laws that impact what metals you use for coins and get inflation from. And of course Sweden can make copper coins which absolutely never will be a bad idea.

As mentioned in the 22nd of December post, we are reworking rivals, fixing levies/merc/regulars balance and much more.

We are also working on a complacency mechanic, reworking expeditions from being a purely script system to being a code system and adding in a slavery market distribution system.

Content Design

We will add a new disaster for Brandenburg, and add new unique advances and policies to some German countries.

A lot of focus on Japan and China mechanics have been done here, including Sengoku Jidai and Red Turbans Rebellions. Manchuria is also getting a fair bit of improvements, and the Tengri religion has been getting some gods.

In the Americas we have reworked the area in Brazil and improved the resource and food setup for both the Andes and Mesoamerica regions.

The Holy Roman Empire has seen a fair amount of attention as well.

We are also working with improvements to other situations like Western Schism and Council of Trent.

User Interface
We have added an “army/navy template” builder just like EU4 has, and also added in a nicer End of War dialog showing losses like eu4. We have also added rally points for raising levies, and recruiting mercenaries have quite a lot of less clicking for the average player.

There are now more settings when it comes to music and we have added in a music player so you can control which songs you want to listen to.

Alerts can be “permanently” discarded now, and you can restore them from a special UI if needed. The game will no longer reset filters to what the game thinks is best when opening a screen again, but you can now pin which filters you want in each screen.

We have added more abilities to manage the formation of a unit, and have a toggle for units to always autobalance for those who want it that way.

The Unit UI will no longer obscure half the screen for multiple units, and you can have a condensed version of the UI as well. We have also added lots and lots of other smaller quality of life things to the UI.

We have mentioned the new river mapmode, but we have also improved the road mapmodes and added several other new mapmodes, like coalitions, maximum control and many more.

Art
We have added a new loading screen for 1.1, which we will show off before release, and added some European 18th century hats, wigs and clothes, not to mention many icons for new advances and modifiers and more..

One of the most impressive Victoria 2 mods, The Grand Combination, has made the decision to quit development and move over to EU5.
We plan to keep making good progress, posting teasers at least once every week or two to keep you all updated. Our current objective is for now, to get the game running like Victoria II. Once all basic mechanics are done, we will immediately start to add the depth that we know you loved in TGC.

TGC's Future

As for TGC for Victoria II, we want to be transparent about our future plans: The Grand Combination is not dead. We will continue to release bug fixes, optimizations, and keep accepting contributions from our community, with laxer rules. If you want to continue expanding on the mod, the door remains open. We invite you to step in and make your own mark on TGC, whatever or wherever it may be. However, the team will no longer be working on new major content expansions, as our energy and resources will be mostly focused on EU5. It is possible that TGC for Victoria II will still receive updates from time to time, but if there are any, they will be done by individuals under their own initiative. We encourage everyone who enjoyed playing TGC to join us in the new server. With EU5's greater flexibility, we will be able to do much more. For example, we want to add unique mechanics for the German Confederation, the Tokugawa Shogunate, the antebellum US and its Slavery Debate, and many others. If any of you are interested in helping us work on EU5, please let us know, either here or in the new server! Any help would be deeply appreciated - from adding flavor to porting flags and localization. If any other Victoria II mod devs are interested in collaborating with us, the door is always open. Also, feel free to spread the news—the bigger the mod, the bigger the team, and that means more frequent updates!

TLDR

  • TGC is moving to EU5 with a new Discord server
  • TGC for Victoria II will be open to anyone interested
We've been analyzing and documenting the game for the past month or so, and with the experience we gathered from this project we were able to build a framework that lets us safely expand and properly build a large-scale project. Those who may be interested in knowing more about the project's existence and its justifications are welcomed to read the Project Charter Contributors who wish to make long-term commitments and know about the way the project works may read the Onboarding Guide

We're also building a Wiki! It will serve as a central hub for storing the project's documentation and solve any design conflicts or questions. It's still a work in progress, but you can check some pages out to get an idea of what we're trying to get done.

I just dont understand how the fuck slavery is supposed to work, i just lose pop every month, I closed down the slave markets but somehow i keep "exporting"?????? slaves or something, every month they are leaving

Fucking finally. Age 3+ was very annoying to play because France will basically fuck you over for the crime of being their only other rival available even if you were minding your own business in Eastern or Central Europe. (Hegemony system is stupid to begin with but I'll take this bandaid for now.)

Been trying the new stellaris open beta. Lots of changes in the right direction, also a lot in the wrong direction.
Ai still seems turbo fucked sadly. The ai in my game does nothing outside of building/upgrading its navy. Most planets (even capitals) are at most 25% built up building/district wise.

Its getting tiresome.

Its getting tiresome.
I usually rant about ancient builds of Stellaris, so hear me out: try a 3.7 game. 3.8 onwards is just useless bloat and old ideas re-applied. 3.7 is right before the leader rework, so you don't have the micro hell of managing your leaders and neither the special paragon snowflakes with busted skills.

Also, no stupid storms to worry about.

I tried a 3.14 session before, but the game was too slow towards the end - and the constant need to babysit leaders was infuriating. The focus on the damn storms was also tiring.

I went back like you suggested and wow its depressing in hindsight how they butchered this game with bloat. 3.7 still has things I would "improve on" but the core feature set just "feels" better than what modern stellaris has. I might just stick with this for a full playthrough and avoid up to date patches moving forward.

I am sorry you guys

I started jakking and did the soy thing... I have to admit though, not only did the game look good enough from the outside to lure me back in, just when I thought I had become a full-time Hooded Horse and Slitherine enjoyer, but I have to say wow, both to the actual quality/holistic game here presented vanilla, but also to being shocked my Paradox complexity again. I'm not an expert, I've only got a few hundred hours in other PDX titles, like 300 in EU4, 250 in CK2, something like that. But I had largely moved on to playing stuff that is a lot more involved like military sims. I mean Vicky 2 was always a favorite but the game frays at the seams by end game.

Yet here comes EU5, and it has... Everything? It starts at CK2 end date, it has some feudalism and levies and medieval representation before Renaissance, it has a market & trade system that is honestly superior to Vicky 2, no annoying Sphere of Influence button, there's way less of a barrier to fiddling with the economy to Vicky 2, it has slavery, it has exploration, it has professional militaries, and POPs are represented somewhat similar to Vicky 2. It even ends the year Vicky 2 starts.

They really saw me playing more and more like... Hooded Horse games and indie milsims and went "oh fuck that asshole he's not allowed to have free time".
I've played like 8 hours and I don't think I've hit unpause except for that two months the tutorial forces you to progress.

If you look at games like Shadow Empire and you were like "wow this is dense" but then realized oh wait it's actually not that complicated, well come join us brother, just make sure to prepare your cheeks first.

Do yourself a favor and pick Brandenburg. They only start with like Brandenburg and Berlin having guilds, and it's only like the bare minimum ones. Let's you build an eco from the ground up.

Definitely.
I remember that he was discussed here when he released this video.
Afaik all those African kangdomz after years are still not playable and do nothing just sit there and lag game, until they are conquered by someone. For all intents and purposes it serves same function as Vic2 version where you have "empty" land with bunch of African pops. Let's be honest most of tribes in those areas didnt come even close to resembling 19th century state.

So, I did it. I decided to play a Stellaris run all the way through to see if its playable yet.

I played as one of the new infernal species. They were fine, not super interesting other than the ability to terraform planets easily and having access to an orbital cannon that is decent in the early game. They dont eat food, but youll still need to make some if you plan on having any other pops in your empire. Overall, theyre decent. Not as OP as some other new species, but not super interesting or unique either. I give them a B-.

I also took their crisis route to basically superheat the galaxy. It isnt particularly different to other player crisis routes. Build thing. Upgrade thing. Get cheap ships to max out thing. The final stretch of the route is terraforming six stars in the center of the galaxy and holding them against countetattack. One good thing is that when I went to the point of no return my federation allies FINALLY dropped me and went to war with me to stop me. This didnt use to happen, so big improvement there. However, none of the AI ever prioritized attacking the "objective" stars I held. I was able to hold them without any challenge while the rest of the galaxy banged their heads against my home defenses. I won with very little drama thanks to this, so very disappointing pdx cant tell the ai to at least CONSIDER attacking the systems i need to finish cooking the galaxy. Engame crisis never showed up, but i finished about 40 years before the endgame time, so maybe the RNG just didnt hit yet.

Overall, it would have been ok. The economy actually works again, for the most part. It still has weird fluctuations that make no sense, but its functional at least. Most systems work as intended, and there were stretches I was enjoying myself. Lategame performance wasnt terrible either. I had 60+ frames even in the last few years. But...the worst thing about this run, and the thing that nearly made me quit multiple times was the sheer fucking number of CTDs. It seriously had me wondering if I have a system issue. I crashed at least 30 times during this run, each was random and unrelated to any issue I could locate through gameplay. To be clear this was a pure vanilla run, so I dont know how pdx can fuck their game this bad. Ive had runs in CK 2 and 3 with over 100 mods enabled on each and I have fewer CTDs by a considerable margin.

So yeah, Stellatis in 2026. Systems are mostly functional, but good luck being able to play more than a couple hours at a time. Very cool, pdx.

Hoping to get into playing Imperator Rome (A limited modset; Just Invictus, Timeline extender, and crisis of the Third Century) after binging a bunch of videos on Biblical and Mesopotamian archaeology, any tips?
