You should probably take into account native and surrounding languages that probably played a large part in how they developed. Go to Louisiana and see their french and compare it to a french native and you'll notice the amount of influence local languages can have on the development of language/slang. Another thing is slang probably developed under a cultural background where it made sense but then it was popularized to the point other people started using it and the roots were lost.
