Pastadome - A place for friends who are being too friendly in other threads.

They were often against conversion and tried to discourage it because if you converted, they no longer got that sweet, sweet jizya tax.
Not true. The jizya tax was usually lower than the zakat muslims pay since it was a set tax based on your ability to pay rather than a percentage tax on your cumulative wealth.
there was also the whole witch trial thing where a bunch of mostly women throughout europe got murdered for existing pretty much
The 'mostly women' thing is an overblown lie. The majority of people accused and prosecuted during witch trials were men because their wealth was seized if they were guilty, making the accusation for monetary gain rather than religions reasons. This is not even taking into account the political or personal nature of accusations made against rivals. Nearly nobody was killed 'for existing pretty much'.
It's still genocide. Genocide is a crime against humanity no matter who does it or what other human rights abuses they add or don't add. It's still shitty.
If a country that signs the UNHRC commits genocide is that the fault of the UNHRC or the country that did it? How can anyone blame a religion of the actions of its adherents if the religion condemns said actions.

"Catholics committing genocide is ok because at least they weren't as bad as the protestants!"
Columbus didn't commit his crimes against humanity because he was a Catholic but because he was a scumbag. We mainly know the details of those crimes because of Bartolomé de las Casas, a Catholic priest who observed and strongly disapproved of Columbus's actions.

I'm not an expert in the subject but I've read numerous sources that said this, so perhaps they're completely wrong, but apparently, this was the case in at least some locations at some time.

In any event, forced conversions are exaggerated, although wars of aggression to gain territory were very common.

This thread was better when it was pasta recipes and not fedora sperging. Atheism is just as gay and faith-based as Christianity. Only true enlightened position is agnosticism.
Not quite. Agnostic and Atheist are the answers to two different questions. They're not mutually exclusive.

Atheist/Theist is the answer to the ontological question "Do you believe a God(s) exists".

Agnostic/Gnostic is the answer to the epistemological question "Is it possible to know that God(s) exist".

Some christians are Agnostic Theists. They don't believe you can know that God exists, this is why faith is important, God isn't going to reach down and give you a sign, but have faith and you'll be rewarded. So they believe but don't know

Some fundie christians and most mohammedans are Gnostic Theists. They believe and they think they can know for certain, verifiably that he exists. So they believe and they know

Gnostic Atheists "know" there is no god, and are pretty sure to tell you so. So they don't believe and they know

Agnostic Atheists don't believe in God, and don't believe he can be verified anyway so what difference does it make. They don't believe and they don't know.

Generally agnostics of both theist/atheist flavours are the chill ones and the gnostics, the ones who know in the fibre of their beings that they're right, are the douches.

Anyway, with that said, I need a good risotto recommendation, no mushrooms. I've never made it before and I've a dinner to make for someone who says they love it. Slap me with recommended recipes and/or videos please!

I wouldn't call St Thomas Aquinas and St Augustine of Hippo fundies.

Basic set operations

Anyway, regardless of that, I fucking would. The doctrine of divine illumination is retarded. Aquinas at least tempered that with the notion that while we couldn't eff the ineffable without divine help we could muddle our way through the material world. Hippo was a retarded absolutist who thought god was gifting every thought that amounted to anything.

It's amazing how many Kiwi Farmers act like evangelical boomers. I guess debilitating autism will do that to someone

Dyn's aglio e olio

- Put a big pot of spaghetti on
- In a medium saucepan heat up 3 tablespoons of good quality extra virgin olive oil
- Add about a tablespoon of oil from a sundried tomatoes jar
- Get a bunch of parsley and separate the leaves and stems. Chop the stems finely
- Fry parsley stems and 2 tablespoons of crushed garlic on medium-low heat
- When the garlic is fragrant and cooked ladle in half a cup of pasta water
- Let it vigorously simmer for at least a few minutes
- Drain spaghetti when it's done and add it to the pan.
- Remove heat and stir in roughly chopped parsley leaves and a handful of chopped sundried tomato
- Use tongs to roll spaghetti around in the oil until it's glistening and has tiny chunks of garlic clinging to it
- Finish with salt and pepper to taste

I've done something similar to this but with rice, and without most of the frippery like the courgette. I'd also omit the soy and use more Marmite.

Which explains why Christianity spread so rapidly under the Roman Empire when being a Christian was literally a capital offence.

Again, if Christianity was ”spread by the sword”, why didn't paganism magically reappear in Latin America when those evil Spaniards went home?

Not to mention her views on abortion.

Yes, Android Raptor, we know it's anudda Shoah, you don't need to bang on about it any more.
I know this is late but seriously dude educate yourself. Being a Christian was an on again off again subject of persecution, and really only catapulted into prominence through the third century crises where all of a sudden that Jewish cultist talking about the end of days makes waaaaaay more sense/and or you kill him because he’s actively cheering on the destruction and everything is either on fire, being invaded, starving, getting the plague or all of the above all at the same time. I could go at length into the various competing cults and beliefs that Christianity interacted with and syncretized with during the early period of the church along with the periods of time where it was completely accepted to acknowledge and give tribute to the old gods while also being Christian. A non insignificant portion of the time Christians got executed for pulling shit like trying to burn down a temple. The early years of persecution were also certainly fueled because plenty of Romans assumed they were cannibals. Eat of my flesh and drink of my blood and all that.

As for native beliefs coming back as soon as the Spanish left... well, when you kill everyone preaching and burn every text of a faith for generations and so thoroughly destroy a culture that nobody knows how to read like what they recorded, a faith dies out and falls into folk beliefs and other practices. You see this happen during the christianization of Europe, a lot of what we’d consider modern Christian celebrations (and more than a few Catholic saints) are copies or analogs for celebrations done by various pagans. South and Central America were thoroughly christianized to the point where it’s a firm part of the local culture, but of course like Europe elements of old beliefs come into play and integrate into the new system of belief. This happens in religion all the time.
