Pedro Pascal To Star As Joel In ‘The Last Of Us’ HBO Series Based On Video Game

They're going to completely ignore the videogame plotline and try to copy and paste "The Walking Dead" as best they can. Writers in Hollywood fucking loathe writers of games and looking down on them, so I highly doubt this will be a remotely faithful adaption. Not like I'm going to watch it so IDGAF.

But it will be hilarious if they give Pedro the Oberyn treatment again.

I don't get the appeal of TWD either tbh. Apparently it's a shitshow now

Neil Druckmann is credited as an executive producer and one of the creators of the TV series, so I doubt that this is going to be a production that just takes the name of the IP and does its own thing like Paul W.S. Anderson's Resident Evil movies did.

This is a desperation move. TLOU the tv show has been in production hell for years. They (Druckmann) were hoping the second game's release would compel HBO to greenlight the show, but the game's poor reception only hurt their chances. Now they've attached arguably the biggest star in Hollywood right now* to their show--probably paying him a buttload of cash upfront just for the press release--hoping once again to force a series order. But here's the thing: the zombie fad is over, TLOU doesn't add anything new or interesting to the genre, and Pedro is a flake who will almost certainly flounce out of the project. The series is never, ever going to get made no matter how much money Naughty Dog throws at it.

*he's the biggest star in the sense that he's had two things come out in 2020 while every other actor is under "lockdown"

The game itself was basically an interactive movie lmao but of course they gonna milk the hell out of it
The Last of Us was basically a remake of the 2009 movie The Road with Viggo Mortensen, simple as that.
Neil Druckmann heavily "borrowed" plot elements from the 2006 book The Road and the 2009 movie The Road and changed some of the prtotagonists and locations to avoid being called a plagiarist. That hack never had an original idea about TLOu to begin with.
If you want to see the original idea behind TLoU 1 than go read the 2006 book The Road written by Cormack McCarthy or watch the 2009 movie of the same name.

The Last of Us HBO Show: Season 1 Adapts the First Game, But Will 'Deviate Greatly' in Some Episodes

The Last of Us on HBO will directly lift dialogue from the original game, says executive producer Neil Druckmann, but will see some episodes “deviate greatly” from the events we’ve played previously.

The Last of Us is the first of several planned PlayStation adaptations into film and television, and with both Ellie and Joel’s roles cast, one of the biggest questions remains how closely will the HBO series adhere to the original’s story. Speaking to IGN during SXSW 2021, The Last of Us game director and show executive producer Neil Druckmann, spoke about his and showrunner Craig Mazin’s approach to adapting the acclaimed original game.

“We talked at length [that season 1 of the show is going to be [the first game],” Druckmann explained, noting that for him and Mazin, “the philosophical underpinnings of the story” were the essential thing to get right about the adaptation. “As far as the superficial things, like should [a character] wear the same plaid shirt or the same red shirt? They might or might not appear in it, that’s way less important to us than getting the core of who these people are and the core of their journey.”

And while Druckmann could not, of course, reveal too much about the team’s exact plans for how the series will play out in comparison to the game, he did explain that viewers will certainly recognize some dialogue - and be surprised by large parts of episodes.

“Things sometimes stay pretty close. It’s funny to see my dialogue there from the games in HBO scripts. And sometimes they deviate greatly to much better effect because we are dealing with a different medium,” he said.

“For example, in the game, there’s so much action you have to have to train the player about mechanics. You have to have more violence and more spectacle to some degree than you would need on a TV show because you don’t need to train people on how to use a gun. So that’s something that’s been really different, and HBO’s been great in pushing us to move away from hardcore action and focus more on the drama of the character. Some of my favorite episodes so far have deviated greatly from the story, and I can’t wait for people to see them.”

But beyond that, Druckmann didn’t want to spoil the experience of what’s to come, only to say that he “can’t wait for people to see what we saw in the people we’ve brought together,” referring to Pedro Pascal as Joel and Bella Ramsey as Ellie. But he did recently get to see one of the game’s main threats come to life.

“I just saw the first prosthetic test for the Clicker and it’s awesome. It’s so rad to see this thing come to physical life,” he said.

If this series bombs do you think Druckmann will kill himself or will he just keep making copetweets about reddit posts?

But seriously, for Pedro's sake I hope this is at least decent.

No, they won't let it visibly bomb because muh nawtsees. They'll buy it some fake awards and jigger the paperwork to make it look successful then quietly cancel it.

It’ll be lucky if The Last of Us 2: HBO version will have the same success like the Sonic The Hedgehog movie, as in video games being adapted as film/television.

Makes one wonder if Neil will have the ego enough to make Uncharted into a TV show.
