A Gladius (Well, the popular Pompeii variant anyhow) is a short-ranged weapon, meant for use once you stop throwing pilums. It's essentially an oversized combat knife.I've done a little digging and found a old post he made for a blog, where he tries to explain the reasoning behind carrying a Gladius (which, may I add, was the standard weapon of Roman infantry) around in public in case of violent attacks. You literally cannot make this shit up.
