[What The Heck Is Going On]

Norton 360 is possibly one of the worst antiviruses I've ever used.

Its main issue is that it flags files (especially executables) as harmful based on how many different users have opened it. If Norton detects that less than 50 (?) users have opened the file, it will send it to quarantine, which can be really annoying if you know for definite that it isn't harmful. The worst thing is that it can sometimes send files to quarantine WITHOUT informing you of it, which I have had happen to me.

You can remove files from quarantine, but what's so dumb is that you can only do so when the file has been sent there, because Norton will ONLY give the option when that happens (providing it does inform you). It does not give the option for it to, by default, ignore files (or even folders) on its main page.

I have completely castrated Windows Defender and User Access Control through the registry. My tolerance for "Windows has stopped this app from running for your safety" is about -6.

If I look at it ever so slightly too much, or if I breathe out a little bit too hard, or if it suddenly wakes up in a bad mood, or perhaps if my actual N64 console has not got the expansion pak inserted, it goes wrong for some reason.

Not to mention that emulators like ProSystem, PicoDrive, the fixed MAME/FBA/Snes9x versions, and Genesis Plus GX insist on forcing people to use this shit and not provide native ports to Win32 or any other platform, and you also have the Redditor shills who just copy things verbatim from the Emulation GameTechWiki website (which prefers to glorify anything available as a libretro core, being FOSS and cycle accurate and shun anything else regardless of whether it actually works better or the authors aren't incompetent commies or whatever).

The netplay also does not fucking work. Even with the ports forwarded on both ends, it has never managed to work.

Most of the libretro ports don't work either or are in a virtually unusable state (the Wii one for instance starts breaking apart after a while of use and the XP/Vista targeting one is not optimised for the hardware target very well at all). Only the Linux one seems to be of any real priority to them, and even then they seem to have absolutely no clue how to label stable releases other than "let's slap a number on this when a date feels convenient".

Also, why is there seemingly an inverse relationship between how sane the usability and straightforwardness of a piece of software is and the more obsessed with "muh freedom" a piece of software is?

Man, fuck RetroArch, NPC tier bullshit that actually deconstructs whatever culture there is with emulators. Part of the experience is having separate, self-contained emulators that run their respective processes well enough alone. Pizzaboy, for instance, has some of the best filters available and any sort of excess is entirely up to you to apply. Standalone PS1 emulation is a breeze, at least for me it's been absolutely tight on my MediaTek smartphone, and that says a lot about the optimization.

A hardware equivalence would be these reproduction consoles that cost $200+ but don't come with some basic features out of the box, like proper side-loading and inferior firmware marketed as "close to the real thing".

If I wanted to die I'd play a real DMG-01 GameBoy covered in nondescript brown stains and with a screen lens that is FUBAR.
