Piece of shit software - Crappy software/apps/programs that make you MATI

  • 🐕 I am attempting to get the site runnning as fast as possible. If you are experiencing slow page load times, please report it.
I see Warp has been mentioned a few times in this thread, but I thought I would drop some news about it that hasn't (as far as I could find) been discussed on Kiwi Farms before. For those who have not heard of Warp before, it's a proprietary terminal emulator with built-in cloud AI and collaboration functionalities. While it has been in development for a while, last year it has gotten substantially more profitable in the eyes of venture capitalists.

Some tidbits from Warp's GitHub page in the Discussions section:

If we look at the referenced page:

You should check out the links further, but to summarise:
  • The company that makes a shitty proprietary terminal with some AI-driven features is valued in the hundreds of millions of dollars
  • Venture capitalists of the company include Sequoia Capital, which was one of the main backers of the FTX crypto exchange
  • Another big venture capitalist widely shilled and astroturfed in the AI sphere is Sam Altman
  • The company has reported a revenue of 4.3 million dollars in 2023
  • The program is still available only on macOS
This is one of the shittiest programs I have ever laid my eyes upon. The fact that it is a multi-million dollar enterprise is deeply concerning. Everything about it glows, it promotes software that sucks ass, and enables web developers on macOS to continue creating the worst web experiences in the world. It makes me mad at the Internet.

Give me rainbows, but I honestly think that Warp isn't a real software project, but rather a way to scam VC money out of investors. Although you can say this about a lot of startups.

Don't believe it's been mentioned yet, but Filebot used to be a godsend years ago for managing movies, TV shows, etc. But once they moved away from freeware and into a shareware model the shit just sucks dick now. I had to move back to using the last freeware version of the software from years ago due to the scrapper not finding simple movies on moviedatabase or other library sites. It almost reminds me of Siri in that regards.... Give it a file name such as "Star Wars Episode 1" and it'll come back with "Do you mean Back Door Sluts 9?"

There’s this program that comes preinstalled on most copies of Windows 10/11 by default (specifically the ones that come with prebuilt desktops/laptops) called OneDrive and it’s the most insidious piece of shit program I have ever seen in my life. If you aren’t very particular about completely opting out of, disabling and removing OneDrive when you first set up the PC, it makes everything on your hard drive automatically sync up to Microsoft’s cloud storage network and will make weaker computers shit the bed when doing even the most basic file management. I had this issue when I helped some family members set up their brand new PCs only to find several months later that the computers were both constantly synced up through OneDrive, meaning anything downloaded onto one would transfer to the other and vice-versa. These PCs had about a terabyte of space each, but all of that was reserved by OneDrive except a hundred gigabytes or so for personal/system files. Essentially, anything you downloaded and put into your hard drive would be transferred between both computers unless you specify to move it to the space that isn’t being used by OneDrive. It’s the endgame of “you will own nothing and be happy”, it’s a nightmare to remove and an absolute clusterfuck of horrific optimization when it is present, and worst of all? You have to keep paying to use it.

P.S. I know my explanation of OneDrive might be difficult to parse but that’s really a reflection of the program itself. Anyone who has dealt with it for long enough probably knows my pain.

My personal list of shitty software that I used:

Windows:
- Jdownloader
- Any preinstalled Windows Apps from 8, 10, 11.
- Windows 10 UX. Still have to use it.
- Newer Office after 2010
- Nahmic Audio that comes with Lenovo Legion Laptop. Fucking rogueware that is hard to uninstall.
- Most OEM software
- Teams
- utorrent

Android:
- Preinstalled Gmail, Youtube, Google app,
- Google Authenticator
- Google Maps
- Google Drive
- Mega
- Onedrive
- Microsoft Lens
- Canon Print Service
- Implicit Fdroid (Droid-ify is better)

Linux (Don't really remember):
- Gedit
- Gnome file manager
- Gnome DE UX
- Unmaintained software like Synaptic App Manager on Debian KDE
- Some Gnome music program that isnt capable of m3u.

Nigga this shit's on my samsung and it doesn't let me delete it, How do i get rid of it?

Buy a Google Pixel and install GrapheneOS. Not even joking. Pretty much the only sane way of using any Android device in 2024 while still being able to use the stupid fucking programs that government and banks insist you use.
I'm broke as fuck and they don't even sell Pixels in my country, surely there must be a way.

Oh wait I'm a fucking retard why don't I look this up myself?

It seems worth noting that the creator and until recently lead dev of Graphene has a thread here and is a nasty piece of work, but Graphene is fine and there's no winning in the world of software.

HP printer drivers. Holy shit.

Across the board of operating systems, you will be anally raped by HP's godawful drivers that include their own dedicated application for parts of the printer like scanning. If you're not paying attention, you will most likely accidentally download the 100 MB package of bullshit horrible nasty garbage. The package for "IT Professional Use", merely a third of the size of the massive package, still forces you to use their piece of shit installer, and dear lord does it glow. In order to even install the fucking printer drivers with the installer, you have to give them all kinds of information like how you're going to use the printer and where you live and there's no way to exit out of it from within the installer. The only way to escape it is to kill the process with the fucking Task Manager. After the drivers are installed, you will be fortunate if you don't get more pop-up ads than a porn site every time you use your printer, because it will sometimes pop-up notifications that you earned a reward for using genuine ink (like as if you had a fucking choice in the matter because they put DRM in that shit). This piece of shit looks sketchier than an early 2000s ad about being the millionth visitor.

Even Linux users are not safe from the bloat that you will have to put up with just to use these fucking thing. In order to be able to print and scan with an HP printer, I had to install something called "HP Device Manager", a program specifically designed to only work with HP products and nothing else. Zero interoperability here, you have to use their dogshit applications installed separately just to manage the fucking thing.

I got rid of my HP printer a while ago after picking up an Epson. Burn in hell, you horrid piece of shit.

If you are into black and white laser printers, I had very good experience with Brother as well. They even very helpfully provide DEB- and RPM-packaged drivers for Linux users. Works completely fine with CUPS and other printer software too. Very easy to use. Not sure about their latest products or the products with more advanced features such as scanners, but the basic printers are totally fine.

Yeah, I know. It was genuinely tempting to get a Brother color laser printer but I ultimately went with an Epson color ink printer since you can't beat the color reproduction of ink. Still a significantly better printer than the HP.

do redeem sir

I have an old-as-balls OKI laser printer. (It's processor is a PowerPC, that old) Can be hooked up via USB and parallel port (also has an ethernet port, but I don't use that) and speaks post script, so you can easily convert any other format to it and in linux just cat it to the usb interface for it to print the file, no drivers required. Costed 20 eurobucks. The previous owner had trouble with paper often getting stuck when pulled in from the cartridge, wiping down the rolls with soapy water fixed that. Because of it speaking post script and having both interfaces, it's compatible with everything from my old Amiga 2000 to my recent ryzen desktop. Since all I do is print the occasional mailing label or form, it serves me just fine.

How did printers devolve like that? Greed, that's how.

Alright so I found a pretty easy way so phonefags like me can get rid of bloat.

Get F-Droid then download Canta (App for deleting packages, yes that includes system ones) and Shizuku (ADB on your phone),
Activate developer settings then turn on Wireless debugging so Shizuku can pick it up and let Canta be able to be to delete system APKs.

Edit: This is pisspoor fagsplaining but your'e able to do it yourself by reading like 3 lines of text on those apps lmao.

Given how mentally unstable he is and still seemed to be heavily involved with GrapheneOS, last year I switched to CalyxOS. So far it's been working fine for me. CalyxOS also supports some Motorola and Fairphone models, not just Pixels.

Just to clarify for anybody reading, yes, Daniel Micay is still working on GrapheneOS. The announcement was extremely poorly worded and was about him "stepping down" from lead developer to just being a regular developer, not from development entirely. I cover this in the thread I made on him.
