He legitimately assumed that he would be dead by this point, which is true, though. How he has managed to stay alive is a bit of a miracle, but his only option IMO is for him to face the consequences of what he's done back in the USA and look for social programs (such as those who help felons find employment) because I doubt Mexico can help him for much longer otherwise, yes, he will die on the Mexican streets.

My thoughts exactly. The only right way forward is to face the music and return to the US. He could reach out to any remaining family and maybe they could give him a place to stay and help him find work or help him while he signs up for government with a jobs program or something. He won't do that, though. Which is why it's puzzling that he's allegedly doing this whole sober thing if he wants to die anyway and die doing his stupid podcast to like 80 people. I think his death wish was that it be accidental and that he would go out in a blaze of glory or something. He's very scared of death otherwise which is why he suicide baits but never makes attempts to follow through. Although he doesn't have much to live for these days, he can claim he has his children to live for, but he's likely thinking to himself that what good is it if he never sees them?

Precisely, but he's at a point in his life where things might be a toss up because on one hand he has no reason left anymore but is hoping that all of his other attempts to win his family back might finally work this time but on the other hand he may flip the switch and go right to being his old self and say fuck the consequences. It really depends on whether he's grown as a person or not. He hasn't.

One thing Ralph might have heard at an AA meeting is that the acronym FEAR can stand for either fuck everything and run or face everything and recover. We know which one Ralph always goes for without hesitation.

The sad thing is that Ralph who’s always chasing highs is depriving himself of the ultimate ecstasy no drug can give him: the overwhelming gratitude of knowing you don’t owe anyone anything anymore and are not enslaved to a beverage or anything else today.

But Ralph is just going to settle for whatever whisky and pills can do for him. If he lives much longer, he’s going to inevitably experience the lowest low, worse than knowing what he did to his mom: the terror and desperation that hits when the drugs and alcohol suddenly don’t work anymore.

Addiction wants Ralph dead but will settle for him being miserable. I’m sure I’m not the only observer who feels the same about Gunt.
