So I didnt know where else to post this but I figured if anyone would know itd be the high seas goers. One of my side hobbies is archiving old apps that get lost to time but sometimes end up on second hand devices. For windows/mac devices, accessing these lost applications tends to be as easy as either removing the .applesetupdone folder or using hirens boot cd/swapping out the ease of access with a command prompt. Or simply mounting the drives on linux and browsing program files/apps folders. For mobile devices I always run into a stump though. As of now my only way to backup apps is to hope to God that the device has no passcode enabled, but otherwise I am basically fucked. I can dump the nand however I am incredibly shit at reballing and considering these devices are either 1st-3rd generation iphones/ipod touches, I may end up destroying a unit in the process. If you ask r*ddit, you are bound to have almost everyone on there accuse you of malicious intent or verbatim copy and paste an apple pr line. I mean this makes sense with far newer devices but because this practice is applied to incredibly ancient devices as well it results in very poor documentation. All this to say, does anyone know any methods of getting into early ios devices pre 4.0?

I didn't find a thread for hard drives, so I guess I'll ask here:

I'm building my first RAID array to store media. Looking around it seems like everyone recommends buy refurbished Seagate exos drives. Anyone here have any experience buying them on ebay or other sites? There's a seller on ebay called serversurplus that seems to have the best deals on exos drives. Anyone use them?

they're not able to carry a game tho nor is it a good long-term strategy to run one.
now tell that to the C-level executive and the board of investors...
because they sure as shit think these retards will carry their brand.

refurbs are always a ticking time bomb with zero warranty, especially NAS tier ones.
either they want to sell you some bombs or are retarded to burn money like that.
but exos is a upgraded ironwolf, i don't touch seagate after the barracuda fiasco anymore.

YMMV.

You might also ask/check here.

An update from the team
annas-archive.li/blog, 2025-08-17

We are still alive and kicking. In recent weeks we’ve seen increased attacks on our mission. We are taking steps to harden our infrastructure and operational security. The work of securing humanity’s legacy is worth fighting for.

Since we started in 2022, we have liberated tens of millions of books, scientific articles, magazines, newspapers, and more. These are now forever protected from destruction by natural disasters, wars, budget cuts, and other catastrophes, thanks to everyone who helps with torrenting.

Anna’s Archive itself has organized some of the largest scrapes: we acquired tens of millions of files from IA Controlled Digital Lending, HathiTrust, DuXiu, and many more.

We have also scraped and published the largest book metadata collections in history: WorldCat, Google Books, and others. With this we’ll be able to identify which books are still missing from our collections, and prioritize saving the rarest ones.

Much thanks to all of our volunteers for making these projects happen.

We’ve forged some incredible partnerships. We’ve partnered with two LibGen forks, STC/Nexus, Z-Library. We’ve secured tens of millions additional files through these partnerships. And they are helping the mission by mirroring our files.

Unfortunately we have seen the disappearance of one of the LibGen forks. We don’t have further information about what happened there, but are saddened by this development.

There is a new entrant: WeLib. They appear to have mirrored most of our collection, and use a fork of our codebase. We have copied some of their user interface improvements, and are grateful for that push. Sadly, we are not seeing them share any new collections, nor share their codebase improvements. Since they haven’t shown commitment to contributing back to the ecosystem, we advise extreme caution. We recommend not using them.

In the meantime, we have some exciting projects in the works. We have hundreds of terabytes in new collections sitting on our servers, waiting to be processed. If you’re at all interested in helping out, feel free to check out our Volunteering and Donate pages. We run all of this on a minimal budget, so any help is greatly appreciated.

Keep fighting.

Anyone know where I can find Metal Hammer UK from 2000/2001? I'm looking for an issue for nostalgia reasons, but I'm not sure about the publication date.

Is there any good services for finding audiobooks? I recently quit all the subscription services (only Amazon, Audible and YT Red) I can find all the shit I want to watch on Streamio and use Youtube on Brave browser on my phone/computer because it automatically blocks all ads, but I'm struggling to find a good replacement for Audible. Any recommendations?

Ironically piracy is much more of a hassle for things like music, I've been trying to get something seamless set up for ages now. ebboks are not much better as Readarr has literally been abandoned due to them losing API access to GoodReads and being unwilling to move to another service for metadata, but Kavita works well and if I sort things out with Calibre I can problably unfuck the metadata

but yeah movies and shows are dead easy, once I got Sonarr/Radarr/qbittorrent/NZBGet/Emby set up it's just a couple clicks to add a show or movie and new epiusodes automatically pop up in Emby.

it's like how netflix used to be before publishers realized they wanted some of the pie.

The main advantage of streaming is having everything "all together", search for what you want and then just load it. My current set-up of pirated content (a mish-mash of rips and other stuff that I've accumulated or torrented over the years) is a mess--some have subs, some don't, and it would take a bit of work to actually make that searchable on the TV instead of dragging out the HDMI cable and using VLC. There's one of those bell curve memes that has the midwit being smart enough to use his pirated collection but not sophisticated enough to use some sort of user interface to easily select and play his favorite content like Netflix.

@Dr. Geronimo
jewtube recommended me a set about WD vs Ironwolf.
it's kind of funny because i was looking for a 2230 size nvme to use as cache for my upcoming NAS because my e-market thought it was funny to recommend me a 16GB optane thinking i won't ask yandex about cracked primocache to make it work optmially as intel ditched the tech.

cool i managed to find a video about a guy using a nvme vs optane, with prices taking a massive dip i am heavily enticed into looking for it, i mean the TLC nvmes, not optanes, i haven't found a single 58GB model in brazil and the 900P has extremely retarded pricing.

My favorite is tokybook. There's a lot of audiobooks on spotify. Rave Search is good for searching.

I don't know how much this will help you but I've found Doctor Who audio dramas I couldn't seem to find anywhere else on good ol' Soulseek

Soulseek (the network) is still great, but the client is ancient. Try Nicotine+, which has dark mode and a lot more customazation. I've been using it for the last couple of months and I'm never going back to the old client.

A word of caution, Soulseek has been censoring popular search terms as of late

The frustrating thing with sports is that, pro wrestling aside, its piracy feels very transient. Like when it's live you can surely find pirate streams, but when it ends, poof, done. Want to watch some race from 2 months ago? Doesn't exist.
I will gladly be proven wrong but I'm kinda blackpilled on that front.
Kodi + 'The Loop' addon is your friend for this. Just checked and it's got a NASCAR section with full replays of most races (I'm not a NASCAR fan or have any knowledge of it but each link I've tested seems to work fine and has the full broadcast). Also has replays for other sports too. Just make sure to use a VPN while you use it.

The Heavy Metal Rareties forum has a download section for historical fanzines including Metal Hammer UK. I'm not sure if it'll have the ones you're looking for but it's worth trying out.
