Explaining piracy standards
tl;dflr (too long; didn't feel like reading)
Examples:
Hakase_s.Adventure.1969.2160p.4K.BluRay.x265.10bit.AAC5.1-[SHINONOME.JP].mkv
Yuukos.Cooking.Show.2022.2160p.AMZN.WEB-DL.DDP5.1.HDR.HEVC-CM.mkv
The name of the content. This is usually written in Title Case, but with full point stops between words. Grammatical punctuation is often left aside, such as colons, semicolons, inverted comma's or apostrophes.Hakases.Adventure, Yuukos.Cooking.Show
The year of the content. You could have the same name for everything else but a different year and the content would be completely different. Think of The Thing (1951), The Thing (1982) and The Thing (2011). These are all different films, with the same name, based on the same source but are all different media..1969.
The quality of the content. This doesn't mean that the actual visual fidelity is good (Bitrates), but it usually a sign that it is. If you're familiar with monitor sizes, you can have an understanding of 1080p, 1440p and 2160p (1K, 2K, 4K).2160p.4K.BluRay.
For an understanding of some of the language used in quality:
- CAM/SD - Horrific quality, usually made with a phone/camcorder inside the cinema. You'll often see people move during the recording, coughing, screaming babies, what have you. Abysmal audio quality, visually terrible. SD refers to "Standard Definition", which is 480p, but is often used by piracy sites to mean "abysmal quality" (not 480p).
- TeleSync/TS - Often made by the people behind the projector. TeleSync syncs the audio to the film by attaching the projector to a film recorder. This will have a better auditory quality than CAM/SD, but the visual quality is still that of a CAMRip.
- DVD - Ripped from the DVD of the content. This is usually in 720x480p but can go up towards 720x576p. The audio and visual quality is perfectly fine and was the standard for home video for a while. I still buy DVDs and some of them have excellent quality. For more information about the DVD-Video standard.
- WEB/WEBRip - Ripped from a High Definition source, such as internet based or from a Blu-Ray. Offers 1080p+ content with good picture and sound quality to match. WEBRip can often vary from 1080p to 4K. This can often be combined with words such as "AMZN" to refer to the source, in this case, Amazon Prime. WEB refers to downloaded content and WEBRip to recorded content.
- BD/BluRay/BrRip - Ripped from the best version available, Blu-Rays. Offers up to 4K, perfect visual- and auditory quality. Being Blu-Ray does not automatically mean that it's 16:9, visually good looking or has good audio, it just comes from a Blu-Ray source.
These are the more technical aspects of the file in question. These are often Codecs used or extra visual quality enhancements from the source. If you don't know what these mean then it probably doesn't matter that much to you. These are not all the compatible standards out there but you'll probably see most of these most of the time.DDP5, AAC5.1, x265, 10bit, HDR, HEVC
- DDP5 - Refers to Dolby Digital Plus, in this case 5, meaning 5 auditory channels. Left, right, back left, back right and center. Without 5 channels, it will default to just 2 channels or mono.
- AAC5.1 - Refers to the AAC (Advanced Audio Coding) codec, a lossy audio standard for video content. The AAC is usually combined with the .mp4 video standard. This codec specifically uses 5.1 audio. Left, right, back left, back right, center and subwoofer (that's what the .1 stands for). Without 5 channels, it will default to just 2 channels or mono.
- x265 - Refers to the h265 codec, HEVC265, or the High Efficiency Video Codec 265. It supports up to 8K video and offers visual fidelity at a low file size cost. This is the current standard for compressing video but used to be, and is still sometimes used, h264. Differentiating h264 and h265 can be important for older computers or lack of codec support in some programs.
- 10bit - Refers to the colors used in the picture. The current standard for visual content is 8bit, meaning every RGB value can have a maximum of 256 values, meaning a maximum of 16.8M colors total. 10bit offers a maximum of 1024 values per color channel, meaning a maximum 1B colors total. This improves the visual aspect of the video content by providing more visually appealing colors that go outside the 16M color spectrum. You would need an OLED/QLED/10bit/HDR monitor to view this. Will default to SDR, Standard Definition Range, for color without it.
- HDR - Refers to High Dynamic Range. This can refer to a lot of things but in video it's used for the visual aspect of the image. In relation to 10bit, it offers a wider color spectrum with mostly visually brighter and darker colors. You would need an OLED/QLED/10bit/HDR monitor to view this. Will default to SDR, Standard Definition Range, for color without it.
The container of the content. This is usually MKV or MP4 for video, but video content can come in all kinds of different containers (I have shows put in .AVI containers, for ex.)..mkv
- MKV stands for MatrosKa Video, and is widely used for its wide compatibility and unlimited video-, audio- and subtitle tracks. The WEBM container is based on the MKV standard using VP8 and Vorbis codecs.
- MP4 stands for Mpeg-4 Part 14, and is the go-to standard for any video but comes at the price of being lossy and basically dogshit, with it only supporting its own standards from the MPEG standard, but is supported on basically everything under the sun.
Understanding Bitrate
Aka. Why does my YouTube video look so much worse than my Torrented movie?
As the name implies, it's the Rate of Bits every second. The bitrate of content is just as important as the resolution of it. This goes for both visual and auditory content. Bitrate exists because saving every single frame or piece of audio at the resolution its recorded at is extensively expensive in terms of file size. Saving every frame of a film in lossless .png format is too expensive.
The lowering of bitrate comes with filesize improvements but comes at the detriment of looking like absolute ass. The bitrate is the allocation of information allowed each second. E.g. for a 1600kbps bitrate, only 200kBps of information is shown any one second, which is around 0.2MB or around the size of 400px PNG. It would mean that you'd get basically perfect resolution at 400px with a 1600kbps bitrate.
Auditory bitrate can be miles lower than video bitrates without any noticeable degradation to the quality (audiophiles may disagree). Audio bitrate can be up to 1/10th the bitrate of video bitrate for a good quality sound.
By multiplying the bitrate of a stream by the length of the stream you get the total filesize, handy for when you have a strict file limit.
Ex. 1757kbps x 3m37s = 1757kbps x 210s = 368.970 kb = 46.121 kiB= 46 MB. (Check Source video below)
