Someone on PPG asked about this duder:

Someone else posted the beta intro video is came from:

It kinda looks like that aqua-colored Mew sprite .
...but it also looks like a Plusle+Minun evo to me.

I wish I could make beta pokemon for a job. It has to be so easy if you're not the concept artist.

I know there is no reason to put too much effort into placeholder art but man, TPC are something else lol

Honestly I always find really crappy placeholders charming and kinda adorable, I know weird, so this just makes me smile.

I like seeing them like this, but imagine you're at the point where you've got a barely to semi functional engine to test with, and all the assets look like this for like, 3-6mo. I suppose it doesn't happen so much now in the 3D era, but it must look ridiculous

To be fair... It shows the direction they want the artist to go, and that's really useful. It's not the best art, but if it's from a higher-up, it makes sense.

It's hard to know what to design sometimes!

Would you really do first concept art in MS Paint, though? Wouldn't you at least use paper or some vector drawing program, not using the mouse but a tablet? Especially in the 2D era.

Yes. We don't know if they're using paint, they're just using something for pixel art. But even so: Ms Paint is fantastic for pixel art. If they're making sprites, sending them some rudimentary pixel art is a great way to also show how big they want the final sprite, because pixels would be 1 to 1.
Translating a normal drawing (digital or traditional) is a pain in the ass, because pixel art demands some compromise in detailing and sizing, and you'd have to guess how big the final pokemon is supposed to be, unless told. But if you're given a sprite that fits a roughly 20x20 pixel box, there's no guesswork.

imo, a mouse is also better for spriting, because it's such a small area of work, that the finesse of a tablet doesn't always make sense

I totally agree with you, but this isn't really sprite/pixel art. I used to do some myself back in the day! Personally I liked graphics gale, but anyway, these are pretty clearly sketches done at 100-200% zoom IMO and probably not the very first sketches. Must be easier for them to collaborate and shit.

The nitro (and GBA, although GBA had a pretty decent software emu early on also) dev kit are designed for use with Windows, no?

The funny thing is, most of them could absolutely be transfered to stones.

Leaf and Ice were.

Umbreon and Espeon could be Dusk and Dawn. They evolve at night and day respectively.

And Sylveon could be the Moon Stone, which the Gen 1 Normal Fairy Types used to evolve. Moon Stone is even pink.

Oh without a doubt but that ridiculousness is kinda part of the charm in my opinion.

It’s first concept. We do those on the back of napkins. They are not high effort drawings. They are idea scribbles you give to someone else. Who then looks at you funny and asks why you gave them a tissue.

I totally get that, what I'm doubting is if they are first concept, or if they're actually digitisations of hand drawn sketches, that's why my OP said if you're not the concept artist. Crude, mouse drawn sketches has to be the absolute worst way to do that, and especially in Gen 3/4 times, harder to collaborate on.

The Hisui ones to be fair do look like digital sketches with a stylus

you gotta wonder if there's any freakyshit in the Mario franchise behind the scenes

Is it just a gamefreak thing or a Nintendo wide thing
I assume its just a Game Freak thing since pokemon are basically animals, making pokephiles basically furries.

It is immensely amusing to me to imagine pokemon has an insular community of (effectively) furries developing all their own little furry OCs and world and some executive has to go down to the basement every few months to tell them to keep their hands out of their pants and excise all the weird stuff.

At the very least, they have that Mario porn in the vault they bought the rights to to stop distrobution

Tbf though this happens all the time in media. Even Disney famously fired some of his artists for drawing porn of his characters. This orgy scene from Snow White is even confirmed to be real

(That doesn't need spoilering, right?)

No. I guarentee everywhere has freaky shit. Considering Mario is also humans and animals.

The main badguy is after all a turtle dragon that wants to bang a human princess.

And devs will undoubtedly get bored…

They’ve just not been dumb enough to get hacked so easily yet.

It’s a pretty big community, I’ll bet. The reason this is causing a stir is because the normies never payed attention to how fucked up the lore is because it gets all of it from myths and legends and those are never pretty.
