3D was always in the cards as soon as a handheld was powerful enough to reasonably support it. Pokémon fans (i.e. the people most responsible for reinforcing the steady decline in the franchise’s quality) were clamoring for 3D mainline games as early as Pokémon Stadium, which only got more pronounced as said fans got older. Gen V looking as good as it did was entirely a consequence of the DS’s longevity necessitating a second generation on the console.
I just found that my favorite boy Quagsire got a second FSG video...
Which is what I WOULD say but apparently it's been taken down. I still have it downloaded here somewhere, so if it isn't up in a little bit, I am re-uploading it here.
Edit: Nevermind, I still can't find it when searching but apparently it still exists
Youtube is fucking dogshit, what is going on. All search results never bring this video up, it's quite literally de-listed from my algorithm.
I just found out that Sleep has new PokéDex entries that's just related to the sleeping habits of the Pokémon, which is neat and all... except that Sleep 'Dex is so fucking limited and it pisses me off. I totally want to see a sleeping Gyarados sprite, and know more about the Azumarill line's sleeping habits, and the Gen 5-through-8 starters, you lazy fucks. Much REEs to be had.
Sorry to double-post, was watching a video and can I just introduce you to PEDOS the Sharpedo?
Holy shit someone at Game Freak wasn't paying attention to this.

What's the best romhack of Gen2 so far? I never played Gold, Silver or Crystal and I'm looking for what to play next. I know there are the Drayano hacks, but I'm not looking for a difficulty hack, just quality of life features
Crystal 251 might be up your alley. It's just base Crystal with added static encounters and optional gift Pokémon for the sole purpose of solo completing the Pokédex. You can get all three Johto starters via wild encounters, and Larvitar as early as Celadon, iirc.
After years of ducking Generation II, I have finally finished Crystal! Playing through it, I began to understand the nostalgia-ridden hype the generation/games have garnered for years, but it still felt like a slog, at times. Most egregiously, the level curves... Man, oh, man. However, I decided to make this first playthrough at least somewhat more memorable by patching in the "Crystal 251 " enhancement.
The patch does as its name suggests and makes it possible to obtain every Pokémon in Gen II. It works in the GS Ball event, changes trade/gift Pokémon events so you can get those elusive trade evos without suffering, and has neat static encounters for some trade evos as well—there is a Machamp in Mt. Mortar close to where you can find the Karate King, for instance; the Ilex Forest and Burned Tower have wild Chikoritas and Cyndaquils, respectively. There are also some changed items in stores, but that's about all. It does not change the trainers' teams or levels, but that's not its purpose, anyway.

We all have a favorite Pokemon, but do you have former favorites as well? Pokemon that you used to love, but that have been "dethroned" by another mon?
My favorite used to be Charmeleon. My first Pokemon game was Battle Revolution and I'd always pick Cyndy to use the cool fire dinosaur. I didn't have a DS so I had to use rental passes, and Charmeleon was one of the strongest rental Pokemon with a Charcoal-boosted STAB Fire Fang. To this day I still like the second stage Kanto starters more than the base forms and the evolutions because of PBR.

Slugma, right up until i tried to use it in a nuzlocke.
I still really enjoy the slugma line's design, but they are absolutely trash when using them early in a playthrough. I'm fully convinced if Magcargo gets a regional variant they're going to make it part ice. I have no hope left for good regionals or modern mon, for the most part. Maybe they'll give it a good regional for once?
I was going to, but I wasn't sure if the level curve was as bad as it's made out to be? I play on emulator but it's still fairly tedious to grind in the older gens. I really enjoyed playing Yellow though, so presumably Crystal would be as fun.
Crystal is at least equally fun as Yellow, I'd play the original first. It's not difficult unless you want it to be. I did a sort of challenge run last year to see how far I could get without any grinding or exploration, my only experience coming from going from point A to point B and fighting whatever I ran into, actively avoiding trainer fights. I beat the 3rd gym leader but stopped after that.
You can steamroll most of the game unless you get unlucky, up until probably Kanto, where the challenge ramps up, especially the final boss.

I like the Slugma line on principle because snails are some of my favorite animals, but man, Magcargo really sucks. Its stats suck, its typing sucks, its movepool's not that great either. Even before the power creep of the latest gens it was pretty bad. If Megas were actually balanced instead of a popularity contest, Magcargo would be one of the top contenders alongside mons like Ledian or Lumineon.

Dunno if it counts, but I used to consider Mew my favorite because "it was objectively the best one." I've never been one for favorites in general I could wake up tomorrow and have a new favorite, the only consistency in my favorites is that my favorites all tend to be from the same pool of ~50-odd designs but I felt like I needed to have one as a kid, so I'd always just say Mew.
Anyways, yeah, I guess Mew. I really grew out of my love for that thing as I aged, both because I'm not a huge fan of its design (cool concept done very blandly) and because I just don't care. I don't know why, I've just completely stopped caring for the thing and it's very strange. Deoxys does everything interesting about it better, and I personally don't care much for the "every move including Transform" thing because it always just feels off to see Mew using stuff like Steel Wing or Mega Punch despite it being a stumpy kangaroo cat thing. Maybe if it had some freaky animations where it demonstrated an unorthodox way of using the moves I'd be more interested, but as-is it just feels wrong.
oh god, tell me about it. I still like it, but I was so much more enthusiastic about it until I had to suffer through using it in Heart Gold. Never again, dear god. I shudder to think of how much worse it was in gens 2-3.

Mew's pretty bland, but then that's kind of the point, to be the "blank slate" that all other Pokemon evolved from (in the Darwinian sense, not Pokemon sense).
I did have a favorite that I just kinda stopped caring about after Charmeleon, Cobalion. It was the first legendary I caught after blacking out several times (I didn't savescum back then), and cleaving random NPCs with Sacred Sword was funny. But nowadays I don't feel as strongly towards it. I still like it, but the boot hooves look weird and its face looks vaguely like Serperior, not to mention that its animation looked stiff even in gen 5.
I just imagine Mew is using some telekinesis or manipulation of air for that, though I assume it's related to Transform in that Mew can just become any Pokémon and therefore have access to those moves without issue regardless if the Pokémon in front of it knows those moves at that moment.

Typically if I like a Pokémon, it takes a lot to "dethrone" it. I'm not into Lucario as much anymore like I was in the past, and honestly, I couldn't tell you why. I recognize he's cool and all, and the eighth movie helped a lot, but for some reason I'm just all "meh" about the line at this point.
In terms of the Fighting-type, never had a favorite so I would go with Lucario even though I really like Blaziken, though I think that title goes to Bewear now. I'd happily die for a hug any time.
Clefable, just a cool pink mon with a really silly design, but I am really fond of Wigglytuff too. My go-to mon of all games is my boy Dragonite because he looks like a dragon and is adorable. I do like cute teams ngl.

I thought of some candidates, and I can feel myself instinctively liking them more as some sort of defense mechanism. I could never betray my guys by acknowledging this about them, or even by letting it be true.
I haven't played Pokemon since middle school when I bought Blue the week it was released, but I've been having cravings to play again. What are the best Pokemon games of the modern era for Switch or 3DS?
That depends on what you value most in a Pokémon game.
- first 3D game, so it doesn't go crazy trying to reinvent things
- comfy French aesthetic, they seemed very proud of what they'd made and eager to show it off, feels a bit short at times
- made super easy very early though a gift Pokémon, but you can just stick it in a box
- introduces mega evolution, where select Pokémon get to hold their own specific item that lets them change their form, their stats, and often their ability and their typing
- Kalos has the smallest addition to the overall list of Pokémon, but that's not counting mega-evolved forms
- able to use poké radar for shinies
- able to use RNG manipulation for shinies / IVs
- introduces trainer customization
- close remake of the Gen 3 games
- you occasionally feel the age in the game design, but they've added a ton of polish
- also added a ton of side elements and postgame stuff to do
- made super easy very early though a gift Pokémon, but you can just stick it in a box
- keeps mega evolution and adds a bunch more mega-evolved forms - able to use RNG manipulation for shinies / IVs
- where the fuck else are you gonna get a Deoxys?
- no trainer customization
- really just the Ultra games with fewer features, look at those instead
- fantastic vibe, but even still, it feels like it doesn't take advantage of the tropical island aesthetic anywhere near as much as it could've
- different version of gym challenges, just dumb running around at first, and then a tough double battle against a super-strong Pokémon and its rotating cast of allies
- got rid of HMs, but instead, you summon and ride around on strangers' Pokémon that you have no connection to, feels weird, and you have to wear a dorky outfit while doing it
- each island feels small, parts are skipped over, and each route feels very short, but the game overall is still fairly lengthy
- has a bunch of cutscenes, but I don't understand why they get so much hate, they're fine, sometimes even charming
- keeps mega evolution from Gen 6, but I don't think you encounter it until the postgame
- lets you hunt a ton of past generations' legendaries in a frustrating minigame
- introduces bottle caps to let you max out IVs
- able to use RNG manipulation for shinies / IVs
- it's the last game that has a full pokédex, but you'll need to transfer a few things up from earlier games if you want to complete it
- good trainer customization, somewhat restricted early on
- feels like the most refined version of the style all of the previous main-series games (before Gen 9 changed the direction a bit)
- some parts of the "traditional Pokémon game" are their best version in the series, some parts are simplified, but no part of it feels like it's been gutted or anything
- introduces a ton of postgame quality-of-life changes for competitive battling, letting you change natures, abilities, etc.
- drops mega evolution, but introduces Dynamax instead, where your Pokémon gets really big, doubles their health, and gets access to boosted moves
- first game to exclude Pokémon from the game's pokédex, big controversy, but you might not notice it
- two big DLCs add a ton of new areas, Pokémon, and quality-of-life features to get resources
- able to use RNG manipulation for shinies / IVs
- I'm still playing this one, so I can't say if anything pops up later to ruin it all, but I really like it so far
- the best trainer customization, a bit restricted early on
- very, very close remake of the Gen 4 games with better graphics overlaid on the same old systems and world
- good if you like the classic feel of the older games, bad if you wanted something new
- keeps the more-limited Diamond & Pearl pokédex instead of the expanded one from Platinum, also doesn't include or allow you to transfer in any Pokémon from after Gen 4
- expanded underground exploration & postgame encounters with more Pokémon
- replaces the Pal Park that Gen 4 used for transferring from Gen 3 with Ramanas Park, which you can use to get past generations' legendaries
- full of new game-breaking glitches that you can fuck around with
- able to use RNG manipulation for shinies / IVs
- it's kino
- some trainer customization
- it's the Gen 1 games (AGAIN)
- great presentation, fantastic music
- casual as hell, oriented toward younger kids
- replaces wild battles with the ball-throwing accuracy minigame from Pokémon GO
- good for variety, bad if you want normal battles
- doesn't play like a normal Pokémon game
- you're running around doing Metal Gear Solid stealth action shit half the time
- tons of new / changed systems to learn for battle systems, moves, stats, encounters, etc.
- you can catch stuff in this game that you will either struggle to get or that you simply can't get anywhere else
- if you want a Manaphy, it's either this or the Gen 4 fan server events
- open-world game, which is good if you like it, bad if you don't
- but being in charge of your own direction definitely feels very new & different
- graphics have rough edges, decade-old textures, framerate struggles at times, old menus and displays are really stripped down
- runs way, way better on a Switch 2
- three different "main story" campaigns, lots to do, feels really big in a lot of ways, but kind of empty in others
- still doesn't have a complete pokédex, but it's closer to "complete" than Sword & Shield's was
- drops Dynamax and adds the Terastalization mechanic, lets you change a Pokémon's type for defensive advantages and an offensive type boost
- Terastalization is widely regarded as the best, most-competitively-interesting, and most-balanced new gimmick out of all of the gimmicks that Game Freak has been trying for a while
- two big DLCs add a ton of new areas, Pokémon, and quality-of-life features
- shiny-hunting is piss-easy (with sandwiches, of all things)
- breeding is slower and more frustrating
- this is the current game, which is relevant if you want to get into online battling, or if you want to play the game that's still actively receiving mystery gifts
- ONLY able to use RNG manipulation for the item printer thing, but if you want a bunch of rare balls and resources, go wild
- very little trainer customization, almost every outfit makes you look like a fucking dweeb
Also, if you're willing to look at games on the 3DS, then it'll play games all the way back to Gen 4.
That's Diamond, Pearl, Platinum, Heart Gold, Soul Silver, Black, White, Black 2, and White 2. If you can find them for a reasonable price, they're each worth considering, too.
And, if you have a DS that you can use, then you can connect to a fan-run server to get access to the old events and catch some legendaries that you'll have few other ways of getting (none at all for some of them).
If you want to keep any Pokémon from the DS / 3DS games with you into the future, then you should either get a 3DS that already has Poké Transfer and Pokémon Bank downloaded on it (since the download isn't officially available anymore), or mod your 3DS and download them (the easier option).
