Well, if GF now thinks that giving a Pokemon a Mega is the same as haphazardly slapping extra parts on it, then let's try doing the same. Take a look at my Dragonite-styled Megas:
Mega Crobat.webp
Mega Kingdra.webp
Mega Haxorus.webp
They're very creative, aren't they?

To be fair, I feel like this is more of a product of Mega evolutions having a inconsistent design philosophy.

Both Mega Mewtwo designs represent this extreme schism.
Y looks like a dragon Ball z villain reject while the other one looks like if Mewtwo were merged with Ryu from Street fighter.

On the flip side you have designs like Mega Slowbro which is supposed to be our goofy take on a Saze Oni and Mega audino which looks like it could pass for a full-blown evolution.

Mega Dragonite is around the same level as Mega Blastoise or Venusaur where they just added on what was already there.

When I first heard of Mega Dragonite, I was not only excited, especially over the death of those ‘Dragoniteite’ jokes, but also was :optimistic:Optimistic over Mega Flygon. /ignores the leaks/
Once I actually saw Mega Dragonite, I feel half-relieved that Flygon did not get a Mega Forme.

They gave the black guy a Scrafty as his ace? What are his other Pokemon, Jynx, Blaziken and Rillaboom?
You forgot Passimian.

Saw the new presentation, I don't even follow anything official Pokemon related anymore but still saw in my feed. And uh...
1753226017788.webp

  • Competitive faggotry
  • Random ass Pokemon show I haven't even heard of gets another season apparently
  • Someone talks about some new animation for half the time slot, the other half is just noises with some effects going off in the background while the main focus is that sheep pokemon trannies and redditors love
  • "Oh shit they're bring back PokePark-ah nevermind, it's some amusement park extension that'll be abandoned and turned into fuel for 'exploring abandoned areas' videos within a decade"
  • People still play Pokemon GO?
  • Mobile trash
  • Comfy mobile game for mostly girls (and trannies, they latch onto cute shit like parasites) I'd imagine
  • Half a minute of some sleep-tracker app update using music that's the exact opposite of what someone would want to sleep to
  • "Wait I thought that moba game was shut down already"
  • TCG shit for scalpers and "content" creators to spend thousands of dollars on so they can gamble getting something rare enough to get their money back
  • More mobile shit, puzzle game that might be hard for the mentally impaired edition. This part was funny though:1753226634095.webp
  • "They're still updating this garbage ass game? Just kill it already!"
  • E-sport fuel Pokemon game, also known as a Pokemon game but without everything that (once) made Pokemon interesting, featuring QoL that you'll never see in a mainline title for some reason. Not to mention how flawed Pokemon combat is (especially in the animation department) yet making a game based entirely around it
  • Lots of nothing with the occasional something, such as Mega Dragonite that looks like they just gave up. Emma coming back is neat and she looks pretty cool. Oh God are they going to call it Dragonitenite?
They're very creative, aren't they?
Adding bits of blue to Mega Dragonite could have been the least they could have done to make it less...boring. Did they fire the guy who made the original megas or something? Even the more basic ones like the mega Tyranitar they used are way more interesting.

It is genuinely depressing that little kids who played XY as their first games are now old enough to get nostalgic and buy this game for that alone.
So the game will just be memberberries for XY zoomies and a retreat of that same plotline.
Zoomer years are generally given as 97-12, so while some Zoomers first got in with Gen 3 (such as myself), most were Gen 4 and 5 - the former got indisputably the worst remakes yet and the latter has thankfully been spared remakes. Maybe there are some younger zoomers with genuine nostalgia for XY as games but in my experience the only people who actually have nostalgia for Kalos were longstanding fans of the anime, amourshippers, or people thinking about what X&Y could have been. I don't hear anyone talking about the battles or starters or locations or legendaries or story years on in the same way you can easily find about Gens 4/5, the closest is people occasionally remembering Korrina or the NPC trainer designs. So if anything this will probably make it bomb harder since they're not doing anything to pander to the diehard Kalos fans.

I do think there is a bit of lionization of Mega evolution because they were incredibly divisive back in XY.
The idea was kind of seen as a jumping the shark moment for Pokemon and the designs could be pretty Hit or Miss but I think also people were upset that they basically cut into the number of actual new Pokemon leaving us with only 72 in Gen 6.

I think the only reason they're more fondly remembered is because of everything else that has proceeded them to the point that they look tame by comparison and of course they've just been around longer.

Yeah, I remember that, they were even criticized for being ripoffs of Digimon (I said the same thing back then), but by the time ORAS came out they were positively received aside from Mega Rayquaza. And through the power of hindsight we can see that GF would never keep adding 100+ unique Pokemon per generation. If it isn't Megas it's regionals, or Gigantamax, or convergent evolutions, or whatever other excuse they fancy to rehash old Pokemon and sell that as brand new.

I had it before I switched to Rillaboom lol, I also considered Granbull.

I'm third-ing these two, especially as a watershed moment for Pokemon. A "fourth" evolution, temporary or not, IMO really broke one of Pokemon's fundamentals, which is always to have three stages and that's that for a line. New evo? Oh, must be a split-evo then...! Nope.

I'm still also mad several Megas could easily be proper, actual evolutions in stats and designs to give the ones who could/especially needed an evo to stand out for good but nooooo.....

I have more sympathy for GF needing to spice things up here-and-there with gimmicks than I sound above, that's the nature of keeping things fresh and I understand it from a sales standpoint... but Pokemon's such a genuinely and wonderfully strong base concept you could easily just fine-tune most existing things in the battle format, endless new mons/designs, and throw in gameplay gimmicks elsewhere to show how pokemon affect their world (IE, contests or whatever) and people would still eat it up. Imagine them doing that or transitioning far more properly into meaty, non-"tech demo"-esque 3D games from Gen VI onward, considered just as chock-full of stuff as say Gens II and IV, and beloved on the same level as those in fan reception.

A man can dream....

Crossposting this from the Switch 2 thread but Z-A is being bundled with the Switch 2 on release day.
For those of you wondering why the Switch 2 Mario Kart World bundle is a limited-time offering it appears that today's Pokémon Presents had an answer to that...

...in the form of a new $499 USD Switch 2 bundle releasing on October 16th that includes a digital copy of Pokémon Legends: Z-A. It honestly wouldn't surprise me if the way Nintendo starts to move Switch 2 systems is by bundling it with the company's game-du-jour, advertising it as being a limited-time deal, and then introduces a new bundle when the previous bundle's stock starts to run out.
Sadly it's just the a regular Switch 2 and not one with a new color scheme but that's to be expected.

Take Megami Tensei, a cyberpunk series where you wield mythological deities in an adult environment then choose between being a stereotypical Christian, Satanist, or Übermensch. Meanwhile, Pokémon is about going into the world and proving that you and your friends are the bes through skill and friendship, while beating the bad guys is a side hustle. That shows how you handle your party: whereas Pokémon eventually expects you to train a full team of 6 of your favourites, Megami Tensei expects you to keep fusing weaker Personæ into stronger ones. Thes expectations form the gameplay.
I don’t think Megaten is as good of a comparison because it existed long before Pokemon did. I’d say if you really wanted to compare Pokemon clones that just couldn’t cut it because they tried to copy the formula I’d say fossil fighters or yokai watch would be better comparisons. There were a lot of attempts during the DS era to try to copy the formula, but in the end it was always “Pokemon but with ___”.

I do think there is a bit of lionization of Mega evolution because they were incredibly divisive back in XY.
While Megas were divisive, the modern appreciation is less because the downward trend leaves nothing better in comparison and more an understanding that they were a necessary decision to keep the series from growing stale. The idea a decision regarding Pokémon being reason to discredit it alone is a poor one, because Pokémon fans had cemented themselves as not understanding what they actually wanted when they bitched about Black and White. There was simply no way X and Y could survive solely on the transition to polygons.

There’s nothing they could have announced regarding the TCG that they couldn’t do some other time or place. Same with pocket and definitely same with live. Pocket also caters to gambling addicts like the physical TCG, but you’re just paying for cards you don’t own.

I think at this point I’d stay completely on live if I wasn’t already growing bored of the current format moving forward towards HIJ. G block rotating out means a lot of the fun cards will be going away with the rotation.

How the fuck is Lysandre not dead? He was practically vaporised.

Didn't he also get vaporized at the end of the XYZ anime too?

I'm sorry, did you think Pokemon could be healed fully from injuries that would lead to literal death in an instant, but not that each human has a bail out system installed to digitize their bodies and teleport them to the nearest pokemon center at the first sign of impending doom?

It's called whiting out. Nothing like the old days when Red had to shuffle back to the center on foot sneaking past wild Pokemon to not get mauled.

I guess this is TPCi's version of Blizzard's "Merely a Setback".

lolno

Megas when they were introduced in X/Y were badass looking and made sense. Having Kangaskan's baby come out to fight was a good mega idea because plenty of people wanted that from Kangaskan in the first place (even though it was a bit O.P. in battle). Making Charizard a badass dragon type was a good mega idea because everyone wanted that. it wasn't until ORAS came along is where the megas started to get iffy.

Nobody.... not a single solitary soul, wanted Dumbo Part 2 Electric Boogaloo (i.e. Mega Dragonite current form). If there was ANY dragon that anyone wanted a Mega from, it was Flygon, and once again it's getting robbed of that spot (I think... unless leaks/official proof says otherwise)

Didn't he also get vaporized at the end of the XYZ anime too?
Lysandre got fucked in every major continuity. In the games he blew himself up with the Ultimate Weapon and either died or got trapped in the rubble while immortal. In the anime he got fucking vaporized by Zygarde Complete Forme. And in the manga he fell a couple dozen feet onto some sharp rocks and severed his spine, leaving him permanently paralyzed from the neck down.

People think about megas that way today, but back in generation 6 they were incredibly divisive and it started the moment they showed off Mewtwo Y, but it got worse when people found out that the megas ended up taking up most of the slots that would have been given to brand new Pokemon and they were relegated entirely to the post game mostly.

Mega Garchomp is a great example of how overdesigned these things could get or in some cases they barely change at all IMHO.

I'm not trying to say that Mega Dragonite is a s-tier design, the more so arguing that the entire design philosophy behind the concept has never been cohesive or properly thought out.

For as much like as g-max gets from the fan base at least the idea is to maximize something about the Pokemon even if things get incredibly silly looking so they all kind of fit the idea.

I think the big issue here is that Nintendo and game freak are essentially keeping everything to themselves because even with the worst Pokemon games they can drum up.

Also, this confirms all of the Ballguy leaks to be true and as somebody that was in that server and has been tracking the leaks for this game for the past almost 8 months it feels like I can finally breathe and talk about them.

DEM Leaks

This game is following the scarlet and violet approach and there's going to be like three different stories, a true ending, and postgame episodes.

There's the detective art where the MZ squad, emma, zygarde, and Lysander to discover what's going on with team Quasar.

There is a mafia saga which we saw a bit of today and the dudes were hired by team quasar to basically deal with anybody that's getting in the way of their plan.

There's of course the Za Royale which has side quest tied to its other inhabitants.

Then there's the true story which focuses on Ange which the best I can describe is essentially like Hal from space Odyssey or an AI ultimate weapon .

I'm not going to go into deeper story stuff beyond that but you get the gist.
>SV wearing the skin of XY and Arceus
lmfao, this shit is so dead on arrival, literally just a crappy launch game except it's late by a few months
Imagine the performance on Switch 1, I got to see this.

I would say that it is a lot more refined than whatever scarlet and violet was trying to go for.

The problem with scarlet and violet was that not only did it have horrible performance which made the game even uglier than it already was but it removed most of the good things from Legends Arceus.

On top of that the big climax at least for me for SV and the DLC felt completely disconnected to the original plot IMHO.

Based on what's alleged here, a lot of things feel a lot more organic and the ending is far more cinematic because it's basically evangelion

People complained about Mega Rayquaza being OP but I don't remember people disliking it. I also personally don't mind if they add less Pokemon to the pokedex in a new region, I'm more interested in what they do with them. Less gimmicks, more game. Megas, Z-moves, etc. don't appreciably improve the experience of battling, and I'd rather GF focus either on stuff that actually would improve the underlying mechanics or just add more stuff for you to do outside of battles and catching. But they won't because that takes effort.

Yeah this is the other big thing megas did. Megas could have been an early form of regional variant instead of the Kanto-wank we got, they could have been new evolutions or a split evo, but no, they're a gimmick that the player won't interact with 90% of the time and doesn't even count to the point of collection.
I’d say fossil fighters
Man that's a throwback. Fossil Fighters actually could have filled in Digimon's niche as Pokemon's biggest competitor if they hadn't gone and murdered the series in the third game. The first two still hold up pretty well for what they were, imo. Should mention they had triple and rotation battles as a mechanic before Pokemon too.
it wasn't until ORAS came along is where the megas started to get iffy.
Megas were divisive the moment they were revealed, and I think it's telling that ORAS scaled back from having multiple megas for a single mon - nevermind that it was just thinly veiled Kanto wank.

I do think that needs reiterating too; not a single Kalos mon has a mega evo in XY, but Kanto has twelve, more than any other gen. Even putting it to ten by adjusting for Charizard and Mewtwo getting two megas each, that's still two more than Hoenn. For whatever faults it had, Kalos didn't deserve being undermined by having Gamefreak use it as a vehicle to pander to a demographic that hadn't touched a Pokemon game since the turn of the millennium. Kalos was not allowed to be its own region in Gen 6 and it looks like it won't be in Gen 9 either.
