OK, so, I may have figured out why Game Freak has been a shit-show for a while. Doing a bit of a run-down of previous games, I noticed a common trend among them:

The games with relatively efficient file structure and which didn't have a complete shit-show of issues were all ones that Iwata was involved with - I.E. the games after Red and Blue, and going all the way to X and Y, which is when his health problems got bad enough that he pulled out (and sadly, died a bit later).

When we think of games, we tend think of them from a fluff and feature standpoint, rather than crunch. Iwata, however, basically was the crunch man and GodJesus Bearchrist was he important to the series, Kiwis. He pretty much single-handedly developed the algorithm that cut the file size for Pokemon Silver and Pokemon Gold, due to his experience with working with the Game Boy in the past. This is essentially what allowed Game Freak to include Kanto in those games. He also rebuilt the Pokemon Battle System for other platforms, so it could be used on other systems. Pokemon Stadium basically only exists because he did this; Game Freak didn't write anything down regarding the battle system from the original games, so he broke it down and re-did it. The later seperation of Special Attack and Special Defense also happened on his watch.

When you go and look at the games he had no hand in, such as Pokemon Sun and Moon, you'll notice, from a data and correlation perspective, that the game is laughably inefficient, with countless duplicate model and animation entries, to the point where the file size is nearly 7 times what it needs to be. That's a problem common to early-gen 3D games, not something that just came out in 2019 with a crew of career veterans.

But there's a pattern here: The most inelegant and mechanically broken Pokemon games are the ones Iwata did not work on. The implication seems to be that without Iwata's experience and "hands on" nature helping the experience along, Game Freak is back to where they were during Gen 1 and Early Gen 2, and that is very concerning.
You don't seriously think he was single handedly behind every good thing in Pokemon do you?

Thats the thing, The game was made with not only love, but care. They knew what fans who play romhacks/fangames are looking for, and likely had fun making it.

I can tell they definitely had fun making the game

Meanwhile, the priority of Crystal Clear's developers is to add black people into the game.

That's... disappointing since i have that particular romhack in my bakclog

Obviously not, which is why I never said that. Tons of things that were good went into those games that he had nothing to do with.

Iwata was a rare breed. He was the sort of autistic savant that could make code roll over and play dead, and he was one of those masters of his craft that was a gigantic help from a technical standpoint on everything he ever worked on. For another example of this kind of thing in action, go look at back when Konami was bleeding edge. For a Western example, go check out GameHut.

Iwata's boon to the franchise wasn't new Pokemon, gameplay elements, or features, it was crunch and code. He's a dude that fixed bugs. He's the one that helped get games running better. He's the one that remade the battle system for other systems, and optimized things so the games took up less space (and ergo, could fit more game in). All of that shit takes hands-on work and elbow grease, and isn't very fun, but it can be life and death for a game from a tech perspective.

While Sun/Moon and Sword/Shield have their share of problems, including way too much tutorialization, removing actually liked features, and so on, their biggest problems have both been technical ones. Sun and Moon were so inefficient from a data standpoint that due to duplicate models, the files for them is over 7 times what it needed to be. Sword and Shield, despite being on a vastly more powerful console, has less content than the two previous 3DS titles, more bugs, and more technical problems.

Correlation is not causation, but Iwata not being there anymore sure as shit isn't helping them.

What are you talking about? They just added player customization like X/Y and S/M did. That was it. They've also added a bunch of other shit too like TM management, starter customization, base stat checking, and have reworked the entire plot, and overworld. Saying their priority is just adding black people is bullshit.

That's... disappointing since i have that particular romhack in my bakclog
As I've stated above, they've just added character customization. That's all. It's still a fantastic rom, and one definitely worth checking out.

Kinda interesting how a bunch of neckbeards managed to make what's probably one of the nest Pokemon romhacks ever made, hell i'd dare to say it is even better than any official gen 3 game
Pokémon clover is the only Pokémon game worth playing for all I know and care

of course I’m a gen 2 fag too

Crystal Clear is good simply for the fact that you can go ANYWHERE in the world (no HMs needed) make any gym your first and then the game will level up the rest based on which badges you have. Plus there's an option to save before getting gift pokemon so you can soft reset for DVs or shinies at your leisure. It's a quality of life buffet guys. I also recommend Prism with its own original story, only bad thing is the sprites look fucking wonky sometimes.

That being said i kinda wanna check out clover now lol

Well...no, that's not all they added. First off, it's called hyperbole. Second of all, I'm talking about this.

I'm not a fan of the fact they used a randomization algorithm that is seeded when you start the game to determine skin color of NPCs with palettes that look more like sprite errors than different skin colors. It feels more like an afterthought than genuinely trying for some sort of diversity. Hell, there are tons of confused people on the Discord for it that post about it, to the sarcastic derision of the owners.

I'm not personally a fan of it, and I rolled back to a version that has all those features, but without this particular half-baked feature. If anyone wants that version, I can send over the IPS patch. You certainly won't find it anywhere on there anymore.

I'm okay with diversity but jesus hell that looks like a bad joke romhack. If I saw that I would expect the sprites for trainer tot be edited with racial sterotypes.

It’s literally impossible to make non-ridiculous looking black characters at that resolution and color space. Outlines and facial features would look ridiculous (as they do) if they weren’t black, and having any marginally darker skintone would make them impossible to distinguish. It’s a losing battle that just makes your romhack look worse.

Makes you wonder if they will figure it out, and have a option to turn it off.

Kind of feels weird when a pokemon fan game with a litteral suicide joke, and a trainer who is a giant Anita Sarkeesian joke feels less immature then those discord messages.

I have to question the priorites when Being "The Most diverse Pokemon RomHack" Is more important then not looking terrble.
