Pokémon (Not-So) Griefing Thread - Scarlet and Violet Released with 10 Million Copies in First 3 Days in Buggy States

Kirby-tier difficulty
What's that? Too easy or hard?

I like the Battle Test thing in OR/AS. Only 5 battles, and even if you lose, you still go on to the highest level of difficulty. A level of difficulty that could take hundreds of battles at Battle Tower to get - if it doesn't all reset because of a single loss. Also the Battle Test doesn't make you save before doing it.

Extremely easy. You should play Kirby games, they're very chill unless you go for 100%.

I like the name mustard it's a silly name.

For me Birch had the silliest name, mainly because when I was younger, I kept calling him Professor Bitch.

I'm really curious what the levels are gonna be at? 70s like it should? How long could it possibly be if they are actually going to want you to run a new team with this (not)starter.

If I can put my tinfoil hat on, considering that the Slowpoke that you get in the games is 12, that the event to get it is in the first town you visit...

... I wanna hazard that it's a low level.

Unless of course GF actually is doing something smart like Level Scaling - Where the trainers and the wild pokemon are scaled to your gym badges or something.

... Now that I think about it, I think that would've been a better way to level cap - You want a stronger monster? They ain't gonna show up at all. Go battle the gyms, at least in that way you don't have to worry about coming across a shiny that the game actively prevents you to fight.

Not to mention, having low leveled critters would make exp grinding much less desirable and push the player to actually fight against the Gym leaders in order to access stronger critters.

This reminds me of the fire emblem fates shit where the other two games were $20 a piece if you spent $50/60 on the main game.
Well, don't forget that after Fates came Three Houses, which was a supermassive, standalone, superpopular game.

I'm more leaning this is a continuation of '15 years back up the path' thing that I've mentioned about Game Freak. They had their 'HD is a big thing' stumbling, what follows is a DLC trend.

Reminder that the GTS is locked behind Home, scummy as fuck
Honestly, the GTS might be more automated, but I vastly prefer the Link Code system. I don't have to sift through millions of requests for a level 69 Shiny Arceus to find something useful, all I need is a few appropriate pokemon, an active pokemon discord channel, and a pin code that isn't a meme. It's easy to do a bunch of trades in succession, as well.

You're forgetting that there's nothing shown as unique to humans in most of these games, and the person has to be a Pokemon to do nearly everything that they do. And the person chooses to leave the human world behind to be a Pokemon.

There's some exceptions - like the Dimensional Scream - but those are unique to the person, and it's implied that Pokemon can occasionally have it as well.

You're reading a thousand miles deep into 'hey, wouldn't it be cool if I could use thunderbolt like a Pikachu?'

I will just say this, I do not want to slog through a subpar story just to play the game, is the reason why i skipped the latest in the mainline when it seems that they are trying to beat the previous generations record in bad story amd cutscenes.

Maybe I would like the game better if it was like the actual game Rogue where you go into a dungeon for treasure and glory and thats it instead of a storyline that really wants you to cry at the final minute because they say it is time to be sad and character development is for the queers. You obviously like the game so don't let me stop you from getting it.

The game gives you plenty of that, but if you want the gameplay without the story the post game gives you that in spades.

It does sound like it's giving a blowjob like a champ.
I'm still amazed at how Vinny managed to get AI Dungeon to get that. Funny references aside...

The Direct was fine in my opinion. I've played the PMD Demo already, it's pretty solid, it's just more PMD, and it's pretty much like Super, the only exception being that the A button doesn't do the regular attack any more, just whatever move will deal more damage to the Pokémon in front of you (it actually prioritises type effectiveness, my Cyndaquil uses Ember on most Pokémon, but used Double Kick on a Rattata, good stuff). I'm so glad they kept the original Job Listing mechanic from the first two PMDs, it was one of the things that Super lacked that made the game basically have nothing for you to do once you got Arceus.

However, I'm a bit worried over the fact it doesn't seem to have post-Gen 3 Pokémon (I know Lucario is apparently in, but that was already somewhat in the original Rescue Team, through a statue once you unlock Lucario Rank). Sure, it's a remake of a Gen 3 PMD game, but it'd be nice to have some of the future Pokémon. Other than that, though, it plays well, it looks good (even better than I originally thought while looking at the trailer), it's PMD at its finest. Hell, just the Demo was more enjoyable than Sw/Sh, which is not good for Game Freak. Finally: an actual, non-mobile spin-off, at long last!

Now the expansion, it's better than a third version, yeah. $30 (or your regional equivalent) is a bit too much for what it gives, though, especially since the original game is already so fucking lacking. This isn't a case like when Civ V was already a solid game, and became so much better with its expansions, or XCOM 2 already being great, and getting the amazing additions from WotC, this is a barren game getting content it desperately needed to have SOMETHING for you to do after beating the main story.

The Galarian Legendary Birds and Regis look interesting, and the new legendaries are... Okay, I'm not a big fan of the Isle of Armor's legendary's evolution, they look really weird. Tundra Crown's legendary just makes me ask "why the fuck does it have Triforces on its neck?", but its design is alright.

200+ Pokémon being added, without you needing to pay for the DLC, is good, but this shouldn't even have been a thing of note, the ability to have all Pokémon should have always been a possibility without this update, with the DLC adding the Pokémon to the region itself. Also all legendaries being available is making me laugh at the people who celebrated Landorus being gone, so much for the "balance with the cut Dex", huh?

Regardless, this is better than a third version, even if people who don't even own the game now have to shell out $90 for everything instead of $60 if they had waited and a third version came out. It's a $30 discount on those who bought the game, but a $30 price increase for those who didn't, some people were going to win or lose here regardless of what Game Freak did. But this is how expansion packs have worked for decades now.

I'm also really glad Gen 4 didn't get remakes, those games are still great to this day (especially Platinum and HG/SS), I would have hated to see Game Freak destroy them with how poor their 3D games have been.

The more I mull over this DLC thing the worse it sounds. $30 is just ten bucks short of a full package 3DS game, so in the grand scheme of things it's not all that much better from a third version. In fact the base Switch game + DLC costs more than two 3DS Pokemon games. On top of this, other cuts from the base game are starting to make a lot more sense...

The GTS for example. Yes, the returning old mons are technically free, but only through other people who've bought the pass themselves, Home (which we still don't know the cost of) or the mercy of Surprise Trades. With the ease of GTS gone, there's just a little bit more incentive for the impatient.

Another is the move tutors. Most of the original ones used for those have become TMs/TRs, so what could they use? The deleted moves. They're more than aware of how important some of those were for competitive, and such players will be forced to cough up that extra cash if they want to stay up to date unless, again, they get lucky with friends to trade around with.

They said there will be other methods to obtain the older mons. They just listed trading as one of them.

Looking forward to the DLC. The $30 price tag stinks, but at least they're adding to a game that was already lacking in content. Getting 200 of the old pokemon back for free is a really nice bonus as well. Really not looking forward to Landorus and Heatran flooding online play again though.

I'm CAUTIOUSLY optimistic. We know next to nothing about the expacs. I totally get filling in the blanks with dread, but assuming that they've shown us everything they'll have is a bit too much. See: how long they kept Dynamax off the cards.

I just thought of something. Pokemon is basically like Destiny now where they release an incomplete game for $60 and force you to buy like 4 expansion packs for a complete game (I do believe they will add more, at least until the remaining Pokemon are added). Also, I played the demo for Pokemon Rescue Team. I like the backgrounds and the art style, but the models do look a little Gamecube (Colosseum/XD) and I don't like some of the remixes. It's basically RRT but plays like the 3DS games.

I just watched the direct and I'm on the fence about it. On the one hand I'm glad to see that 200+ Pokemon are going to be added Sword/Shield but I HATE the fact that they'll only be available through Sword/Shield's craptastic trading/raid features (and Home's eventual transfer and trading functions). I can also see GF's still trying to find a common ground between revealing too much and too little but it feels like they're erring on the safe side again.

I'm also disappointed that we ONLY got a release date for Home, the lack of news is REALLY unsettling and it makes me feel like it'll be as barebones as humanly possible.

Pokemon Mystery Dungeon: Rescue Team DX looks interesting but I have a feeling it'll fall into the same issues that the recent The Legend of Zelda: Link's Awakening remake will encounter if it's a straight-up remake of Red/Blue Rescue Team, mainly not enough content to justify the price tag it'll have.

Trading in Sword/Shield is a major pain due to the lack of a GTS, it's just not worth it if all you have is peer-to-peer trading

I said it before and I'll say it again: If your main complaint about the GTS and the reason why you're happy it's gone is "I don't have to dig through countless crap trades to find what I want now!" then you used it wrong. Using the GTS "correctly" means YOU post the trade requests and wait for your request to be accepted, almost all reasonable trade requests that don't involve Legendaries are eventually accepted.

You know that for every trade you do the 'good' way, someone has to roll up their sleeves and do it the bad way? Like, how good your strat is, is literally dependant on how many people aren't doing it. That's not a good system, just an exploitable one.

And like, I'll take link trades where I can get a dozen trades done in an hour, all with complete strangers and one pin code. If GTS added a more sophisticated search, I would certainly reconsider,

idk, only rarely did trades you put up take forever to get as long as you throw in something good (doesn't even have to be something fully evolved, breedjects in rare balls were always highly sought after), and that'd usually only happen when you're looking for more rare specimens like trade w/ item evos. With stuff like version exclusives in particular they tended to go through pretty quick, even faster if you put your version's equivalent on offer.

Pokemon-Sword-Shield-Regi-Dragon-Type.jpg

Really digging the Dragon regi. I hope it has an attack animation where it closes its arm into a dragon's head and launches an attack from the mouth. I think Regidrake would be a good name for it.

I also didn't realize how badly I wanted a road runner pokemon until I saw Galarian Zapdos. That is an awesome design (the other 2 birds also have good Galarian forms, but Zapdos' was my personal favorite).

Do you really go into Pokemon games for the story? Why would you do that to yourself?
the looker sidequests are decent. that's about it though. and they're short.

This brings up an issue I have with sword and shield now that I've actually played through it (I told my friends I wouldnt buy it so they just bought me the damn thing). The story in a pokemon game, ideally, should be the journey itself. People forget you dont need a big sweeping plot with tons of cutscenes to make a good RPG. You just need a world and areas worth exploring and a goal that's fun to seek. The whole travel the land challenge 8 gyms then the elite four become the champion thing works well for that, but the stories in this gen and the last in particular interfere with the journey. If you ignore the "actual story" bits sword and shield is a solid classic pokemon campaign. The gyms are great, none of that boring island trial bullshit. You fight or avoid trainers like the old gyms, but the puzzles are actual minigames, not... whatever the island trials were trying to be. The routes are actual routes and not the straight lines of sun and moon (the caves suck though).

But the problem is, you cant ignore the plot. It's constantly getting in the way, they dont handhold you through the whole route or gym like the last gen, but they always stop you inbetween routes and at the start of the towns. Might as well be "Press A to Scroll Text: the Game". The dialogue is never interesting. and for all that, the story just sort of peters out at the end before interrupting you one last time when you reach the pokemon league. When the villain showed up on screen I couldn't help but think "fuck you just let me play this game I dont wanna deal with your shit". But they make you deal with it. It's not even good the version legendaries just beat the final boss for you. Yet the champion fight WAS decent when they finally let you do it. It's such a conflicted and underbaked game. I have a feeling there was some internal argument about what the game was supposed to be.

Then there's all the other bullshit surrounding the game. Gamefreak's blatant lies leading up to and after the game's release, the sheer gap in quality between this and the other big nintendo franchises' switch showings, the dex cut, etc. I dont care that you cant catch every pokemon in game, but not getting to transfer your pokes is ridiculous. Just as ridiculous is that if you can transfer previous generation pokemon through pokemon home, it will likely require THREE different subscriptions. nintendo online, pokemon bank, and pokemon home. What the FUCK is that?

Pokémon Home is free to download but it has paid features. It tells you with small text, seems like many people missed it. :/
