I did it once. It was a fun side project, getting paid in crypto for drawing over here. Hell yeah. I also agree with the containment board to avoid leakage to on-topic discussions.
 
I would say as long as it is not out of place and infrequent - as Null says gentle and relevant - I don't see why it would be bad. I don't imagine enough people would want to associate their KF account with their brand for this to be a big issue. Maybe just have some restrictions around it at the very least so it doesn't contaminate discussion threads. I would definitely like to see the independent artists and creator side of KF grow I think allowing some form of self-promotion would be a nice step toward that.

Yeah it’s probably best to stay separate, I guarantee there are many people on the site that would love to see your stuff, but if you gain traction on other sites than youll have the Twitter mob against you. (There’s a lot of twittards who think even newgrounds is alt-right let alone kiwifarms infamy) If someone say stonetoss was on here nobody would really care because his reputation is to be as edgy and offensive as possible.
 
Reserve the right to laugh at the retards and ban dickwads who abuse the privilege. Other than that, let the networking commence.
 
I voted No, unless self-promoting gets its' own thread. I see it as a slippery slope. Relevant thread part is what worries me. I enjoy Cooking threads, but I don't want to buy a cookbook. I just see it becoming over time hard to have a conversation or discussion when you don't know if the other person is just trying to sell you something or not.
 
There are a lot of talented people here. If it's a "Self-promotion subforum" you could have an art section with a "show your work" and "introduction" subsections. Same for other kinds of self promotions, so people can link them and see, without shitting up one single thread. Same for other kind of talents, like programming with an "introduction" and "show your work" parts.
 
Everyone who's ever recommended a thing has done third-party promotion, likely for free, possibly for retarded reasons. Self-promotion is less retarded than that.

Plus the promoter isn't only taking a le evil stalker website reputational risk, he's also risking getting true and honest feedback. A significant part of why people hate ads is they can't give true and honest feedback with the same amplification.
 
I say that we allow it within reason.

The specific case you mentioned is a creative project that somebody is working on and as long as they aren't shitting up the website with self promotion, then I think allowing people to shill their own creative endeavors is healthy for any online community.

But for example, I'm building a career as a freelance programmer and I have discussed my work on here and even asked for advice from other people on projects I have worked on, but I think it would be obnoxious for me to go post in the programming thread to shill my services to people. However, lets say for example, I made a video game with my programming skills and then shilled it on the forum, I don't see why that should be a bannable offense.

I think it should be a matter of discretion. Someone who is shitting up the site to shill a service and someone who is promoting their own original creative work to other forum users who might be interested is fundamentally two different things.
 
No. Because it  will turn into spam and the ads  will leak into non-relevant threads. Because "just this once" and the subconscious belief that "rules don't apply to me."

A dedicated forum to ads might work. Keep them in quarantine, make deletion of said threads if advertising happens outside it.
 
Pleasantly surprised that the poll is in favour for putting up advertisements or hosting sponsored content.

I would like to add if any content were to be sponsored, it should pass a smell test like the threads in the Proving Grounds.

I have maintained that it is a good way to gIve @Null money raise money for the site.

I'd argue for a "X time since account has been created" rule for shill posts. Saves the trouble of people creating accounts specifically to post ads and other than that it's up to the mods discretion.
 
If after all this time it only happened once, I feel like allowing it is fine. I can understand the fears of it snowballing from there, but I don't think a lot of people who come to the Farms of all places are doing so with the mindset of promoting their work. I'd like to think the majority of regulars wouldn't consider it because they know not to give away personal information about themselves, and even if they're doing business in a way that somehow avoids giving identifying details, they'd assume people are here to read about cows and not hire a web developer.

This. Gotta filter out shekelsteins who just wanna milk as many users as possible, otherwise there's going to be 6 gorillion new threads from 1-post accounts.
I'd favour using post count as a metric, but I don't wanna punish loyal lurkers like @sW1chyboi ...
 
If you want to legitimize the space, you have to allow people to self promote their own creative endeavors. Whether that be a comic book, podcast, YouTube channel, or book. That means that creatives are taking the subculture seriously.

Allow the forum to judge the quality of the promotion. If someone is posting slop, it usually is reflective of an eccentric individual. That in and of itself brings more content to the forum.
 
If they want to advertise, make them pay the toll. Just don't expect us to blow smoke up their ass and tell them how wonderful it is if it's bad.

Well, we could be. A tiny rectangle as a banner like how 4chan does it, linking to whoever is crazy enough to advertise here could work. As long as they're paying for legit ad space, the ads aren't predatory, aren't targeted, etc. I don't see why not. If it isn't gayed up, money is money.

There are thousands of people perusing this website everyday, and everytime something big leaks there are even more. Even Mutahar admitted to sourcing from Farms. No way the influx of people clicking on relevant links doesn't make at least some pocket money.
 
Even if @FROG is tad exceptional, I did read his comics and liked the result so... why not.
