I am in the fortunate position of not knowing any local polygamists, but I doubt I'm missing much except STDs.

Same in my country. It's certainly not done by normal well adjusted people. Or at the very least, they don't try to justify their cheating by making it into a lifestyle.

But it's counter-culture and not icky traditionalism so, of course, gross uggo people with mental issues glom onto it to crow about it being their identity since they have no real personality to speak of.

And mine. By and large the welfare allah ackbars that import extra wives from Morocco or Turkey. Government recently put a stop to it and now refuses to acknowledge foreign marriages with multiple wives. Either you have a paper that says you married 1 wife, or you are not married at all to them. The non welfare cases still are allah ackbars or the very rare and seldom mormon.

In the US, fundamentalist Mormons with multiple wives will have the non-official wives apply for every state benefit that exists for single mothers. They call it bleeding the beast.

Religiously-based polygamy is different from autism-based polyamory, however, let's not get them mixed up.

There's also cultural polygamy, like Jacob Zuma and King Mswati of Swaziland. While both those men would be lolcows if not for the "no politicians" rule, their craziness is of a different variety to these tards.
 
I'm no great friend of the Mormons, but I will point out that any Mormon in the United States who is practicing polygamy does so in defiance of official LDS doctrine.
 
Cultural traditions, no matter how weird or bad they may seem to outsiders, are hard to give up. Most American Christians circumcise their sons despite having no religious reason to do so, and in fact getting rid of mandatory circumcision was a big way early Christianity got de-Judaism-ized. But it's become a cultural tradition.

On the other hand, having multiple significant others is not a cultural tradition in mainstream America. It's not just weird, its primary association is child abusers like Warren Jeffs. The benefits of traditional polygamy--one man with multiple wives who all live in the same house and don't have other partners-- are fairly easy to see: the man gets more sex and more offspring, and the women share the labor of childrearing and keeping house. The benefits of a rotating cast of significant others with little exclusivity or labor sharing are less obvious. Many poly people keep the traditional model of keeping house and childrearing but not the sexual exclusiveness, which is even worse than traditional polygamy or monogamy. So there's a lot more to wonder about why people do it.

The problem is you end up with single males who never have any chance of finding a wife. The cults, like the Jeffs cult, "solve" this problem by just ejecting the single males into society with no socialization and no education to cope with it, where they create huge unfixable problems by being completely psychologically fucked up and traumatized and uneducated, and generally end up on welfare or criminals.

Historical stable polygamy worked because most men didn't have multiple wives, only the richest. And there were more women than men--male babies are slightly more common than female but they also die more, especially before current medical care, and pre-modern society sent a lot of young men to their deaths in endless bloody wars in a way we don't see today outside of a handful of countries.
I wonder if Iran is going to have problems with this. Their birth rate is lower than the US and they have decent infant care and not a ton of violence (so most males born will be surviving to 25), but polygamy is legal.

I saw a post recently by an MTF who said that polyamory is so common among troons because there's not enough partners to go around. It was interesting to see that acknowledged. Of course the fact that most troons are attention craving sex freaks doesn't help.

And this is the real main reason why South Africa and some of the surrounding countries are so incredibly violent. There are actually African countries with significantly lower murder rates than the USA (Rwanda, for example), but the widespread infidelity and unstable family structures of Southern Africa, combined with poverty and corruption, lead to many young men being drawn into gangs and a massive prevalence of AIDS. The jokes about black fathers in the USA reference a lesser version of this, which is partly why inner city gangs exist. There are also similar problems in Brazilian favelas and pretty much anywhere else with a serious gang problem.

Polygamy is terrible.

Most Iranian men aren't polygamous, so it probably won't be that much of a problem. Cultural practice is more important than actual legality.

When your dating pool is solely made up of mentally ill rejects because no one else will date you I can imagine people get rather desperate and open up to the idea of just about anything so long as it means having some vague kind of companionship, regardless of whether its intimate or healthy.
 
My experience with poly IRL is mostly modestly attractive girls using it as a way to lock in multiple betabux orbiters (both male and female surprisingly) with sex, like some kind of unholy amalgamation of crowdfunding and prostitution.
 
My best bro literally just declared to me that he and his wife are now polyamorous. She initiated the conversation and he's said "She's only interested in relationships with other women."

Also, she's bipolar and he's a doormat.

I give it two years tops before the whole thing collapses. This is going to be magical.
