Polygon: "Why Gone Home is the Most Important Game of the Decade" - Polygon does it again

It's never been as prevalent in western games as it is in Japanese ones but there was more than just Bloodrayne. the Timesplitters games for example had a lot of pinup style girls.
Timesplitters was British (Free Radical were former Rare guys). Though one American character I just thought of Cortana from Halo.

I'm not saying they didn't exist at all, just that they were rare. These days most AAA games are either Ubisoft (who are up to their neck in politically correct bullshit) or American, and Americans are prudes. Not all of them, just it's very broad stereotype that they care more about guns and violence than sex. You're not going to see something like Dead or Alive Xtreme from EA or Activision.

Well shit, speaking of England how did I not think of the original Lara Croft first?

But it really wasn't as rare as you think, pretty much every female character in western games used to be attractive, even if there wasn't a heavy emphasis on fanservice, they were still attractive just by default.

For some random examples there's Natalia from the Mechassault games

Then there's Sony's God of War series which used to be infamous for it's sexual content.

Starting to notice a pattern here?

Yeah it's hilarious that Full McIntosh was the brains behind that operation, and while he's a full blown SJW idiot I have to concede that the videos he makes are well produced, at least way better than that alcoholic bore Contrapoints.

Meanwhile Feminist Frequency after getting how many millions just pumps out a quick weekly podcast, although I can understand why Anita doesn't want to be in front of the camera anymore she frankly hit the wall.

That is one rough looking 36 year old.

Holy shit she is evolving into Movie Bob.

God damnit Polygon,

Real talk: I played Gone Home when it first came out, enjoyed it, found it a neat little thing. That's it. Its the retail equivalent of a flash game. I liked poking around the house, I liked getting a feel for characters we're never gonna meet (typical dysfunctional middle class family, that dynamic was legit portrayed well) and I actually found the horror fakeout aspect kind of amusing.

That's all. Its just a little novelty. Frankly this game would be far more well-regarded if people just stopped ramming it right down everyone's god damned throat. Most important game of the decade? That's fucking ridiculous. Hell, even weird shit like Mother Russia Bleeds had more commentary on gay culture and being uncomfortable in your own body that this little point-and-click where you poke around your parents' house for an hour and a half.

Its also not a new idea. Not only have flash games totally cornered the market on "poke around a place until you find stuff" (Exmorits 1 & 2 come to mind), but fucking Deus Ex had a whole chapter where you poke around a mansion and get side commentary from another character, and I legit got about as much enjoyment from that one little side chapter as I got from the entirety of Gone Home. Arguably more because the soundtrack was better and I was more invested in the game.

Y'know, I've just been inspired by this post to see if luvvly jubblies used to be a big thing in british games. I know for a fact that Rareware was quite clearly into it (as well as the furry variety).
I might peruse the Amiga back catalogues too see if there's any joy to be had.

Also speaking of the hoop earring harpie, her hot takes are still just as hot as ever:

The responses have the usual emasculated soy gremlins, but there's a not insignificant amount of shitposters there too. That ratio is a thing of beauty.

The sexiest box art I've ever seen for a game (imo, anyway) is American:

I read that second tweet in the DSP sarcasm voice, "WOOOWW"

She's always been a total clown and it's sad gamers fell for the bait. Makes me happy though that she squandered her shot at having a real voice. Also how hell does two episodes of a Star Wars TV show enforce "Patriarchy?" Christ she uses that like democrats use Russia.

When did that happen?

From day 1 she has been a joke. The games press and mainstream media was behind her 100%, but no one else really fell for it. Even the few that wanted to give her the benefit of the doubt jumped ship long ago.

If you mean the death threats, they were all fake. When in front of the UN, she revealed that the threats she got were things like "you're lying" and "you suck". Even the infamous bomb threat she got was all but confirmed to be a false flag.

The UN bullshit was the high water mark of Anita and Zoe Quinn's relevance and it was all downhill after that, especially when their actual paper submission was so abysmally bad the UN organ had to withdraw it and apologize for it. It literally cited fucking Lyndon Larouche and, more amusingly, local files on the computer of whoever wrote it.

I vaguely remember complaints about the skimpiness of the female armour in WoW, especially with the Night Elves.

But the US example I always think of is Lollipop Chainsaw, which I never played but had James Gunn involved back when he was allowed to find women sexy.

Are there instances of games journalists actually doing journalism instead of, err, journaling? Maybe something investigative?

This isn't counting all the schlocky covers that had women on the front to draw you in, or the ads that gave tons of kids their first boners, and I missed a ton. Japanese games definitely outpaced western games in terms of hot women, but I think the reason that video games were targeted so much by moral guardians wasn't just because of the violence, but because they continued the tradition of pulp novel covers in regards to skimpy women.

Closest I can think of was a few years ago when Super Bunnyhop reported the horrid working conditions at Kojima Productions during the making of MGSV and got his video struck down by Konami. He also had an interesting video regarding TellTale's work environment in the face of their bankruptcy which contextualized why they lost so much money.

Other than that, not really anything from the big name game journalist sites.

To be fair, if speaking at the UN and getting them to agree - whose peace keepers are child rapists, child pornographers and human traffickers - is your high point, you're pretty fucking low.

Oh God, that paper was fucking hysterical. It quoted people who thought Pokemon were demons and had a fucking C Drive as an actual citation. Nigger, you don't run an auto-cite program and then just don't like. Write and cite motherfucker. You're worse than one of my undergrads, holy shit. I am utterly shocked it didn't include www.wikipedia.com as one as well. How much do you get paid?

I'll take your job and write shitty takes for money, at least I'll do proper citations.

Ironically it's almost certainly that shit that led to it being withdrawn. UN content is often absolute garbage sometimes even worse in actual substance than that nonsense, but if there is one thing UN organs are good at, it is excessive, pointless formality. In journal citations, the absolute worst thing to deal with are citations to UN bodies because their conventions on document naming are utterly crazy.

They also take the incestuous citation fetish of academia to a new level. I don't think there's anything else like it in the world.

I remember people used to joke and poke fun at fan service, but people were almost never actually angry about it or treated it like it was a genuine problem with a game.

It would have been absurd to be upset over a little tits and ass in 2000s culture, sex was everywhere back then.

One of the more recent ones was @sophnar0747 uncovering E3/ESAs lax standards in data security that resulted in a bunch of E3 attendees being doxed.

How did games journalists respond to the first article in years that wasn't clickbait or a copy pasted press release? Steal the story without credit, and throw @sophnar0747 under the bus, branding them with all the usual buzzwords for the crime of doing their job well.

The sjw mind virus is essentially localized to North America and Central Europe. Sexy is still very much the entertainment default in the rest of the world. Hell one of the main reasons Disney's new Star Wars trilogy is in so much trouble is because Chinese audiences hate the fact that the main cast are so fucking ugly.
