Polygon: "Why Gone Home is the Most Important Game of the Decade" - Polygon does it again

It would be like thinking you're the first to climb a specific mountain, only to find an entire city on top. And you didn't climb it, but took a helicopter to the top and claimed you climbed it. And nobody likes you.

Because you're such a complete asshole that even after people point out no, you weren't the first to do this, in fact lots of people did it before you were even fucking born you hipster piece of shit, you still kept insisting you were the first who ever did it, and everyone who remembers anything before you is apparently now a Nazi too.

And then you wonder why everyone actively hates your guts.

Anita/Tropes vs Women happened in 2012, GG didn't start until 2014. So unless the GG time machine is real, the timeline doesn't add up.

Anita being pushed by the games press was an example of corruption. I'd have to check, but I think by the time GG happened she was already outed as a fraud but was still making headlines with no mention of her failing to deliver on her Kickstarter promises.

Correct me if I'm wrong but 2012 was simply the year of her Kickstarter and she didn't actually start putting out videos until 2013, right?

Anita's influence started to die the second she criticized Doom's violence at E3. Her biggest defense that she 'wasn't Jack Thompson' was basically stripped of her. Even the gaming press couldn't counter that with what she said. This is in large part because 1) She really doesn't know video games and what effect this would have and 2) She largely left it to her cuck boyfriend Jon McIntosh which is why she said it.

Way back when she was just getting started I made some former online acquaintances really angry by calling her "Jack Thompson with lipstick and hoop earrings" and this was years before she criticized Doom.

Turns out I was right on the money.

I could be wrong, but did Jack say how he regrets that crazy bitches like Anita and Zoe even were allowed to open their cake sockets and have a platform?

Since you've played the game, is it true that notes with compromising information are often so close together that it makes no sense?

It's been a few years since I played it (the never embarrassing Steam usage info tells me 2016), but if I remember right, yes. Since the house is laid out more or less like a normal one, you'll have the nastygram from the dad's publisher in one room, and the mom's correspondence with the park ranger railing her in the next one. Evidence of the dead uncle's bad touch is strewn around in the basement. Then you follow the sister's lesbian hipster journey like a bread crumb trail, which takes you upstairs through her bedroom to the basement storage where she supposedly consummated the relationship to the dining room where she came out of the closet and finally to the super secret Goonies passageway leading to her attic safespace.

I called her Jack Thompson with tits and got someone angry. They couldn't come up with a single reason it wasn't completely accurate though.

IIRC, even way before Doom 2016, Anita wasn't just femsperging, she also called the ineherent violence of video games as gross. That was in the old video of her before she became big where she says she's not a gamer.

On the subject of Gone Home:

I will, in great shame, admit that I purchased Gone Home when it was on sale like because my favorite game review channel at the time actually promoted the game. Needless to say, I wish I can scrub this off my Steam account.

The only thing more embarrassing than having purchased this game is reading the plebbitors defend this game and somehow manage the gall to say that its critics are "holding back gaming" or "preventing games from being art" or something along the lines of that. Like, what the fuck does game as art or becoming art even mean? Distilled narrative content? Politically correct representation?

You can't win Sundance simply by having a black and white film where a woman sits in a diner for 3 hours stirring coffee.
That type of content is still being done. Sometimes, it's literally just footage of the moon in a dark room. And it gives the same vibe I get when people talk about games like Gone Home. For some reason, I'm taken back to the times I learned about art movements and how, over the years, we went from chiaroscuro paintings and exquisitely carved stone to spattering paint on a large sheet of fabric and putting urinals on display.

Fortunately, walking sims aren't a trend in the industry.

There’s a big difference between Anita Sarkeesian and Jack Thompson. Jack wasn’t doing it to scam people out of money like Anita was.

It all turned out with a happy ending, she’s broke and feminist frequency is clinging to scraps while on life support.

games aren't being prevented from being art
they are already art
and the main focus of the art is having fun
and if that means solving puzzles or shooting things, then so be it
maybe these people need to think of better ways of talking about their lesbian fantasies, i hear young adult novels are good for that.

From here:

"She’s liberal politically. I am a conservative. She also is all bent out of shape about female stereotyping. Not a big problem when it comes to the more grotesque consequences of kids consuming games. She also tries to curry favor from the industry, as if she were some kind of flirt, speaking of stereotypes. If you are fighting with an industry, you don’t accept their awards and try to be some sort of heroine to that industry. Pathetic, really. She’s not a warrior on the issue. She’s a self-promoter, and I think everyone has pretty much figured that out.”

As batshit crazy as Jack was, with writing court documents that sounded like angry blog posts and getting himself disbarred by burning every professional bridge, he's spot on here. Her Marketing 101 tactic of, "I'm a gamer just like you guise" was transparent at best. All it did was make her phoniness that much more obvious. Everyone knew her Tropes vs. Women in Video Games was the next step in self-fulfillment attention whoredom/professional victimhood. She was an overlooked, more boring Nostalgia Chick before she struck a hot iron and put her name in flashing lights and shiny hoop earrings.

Jack was a nutbar who chased windmills he believed were genuine giants. Even he saw Anita for the charlatan she was; although I suppose that sixth sense comes natural to a trial lawyer.

It was something like that. I remember she was late with the videos. I don't know if she eventually made the entire series or abandoned it or condensed the videos into fewer videos that covered multiple topics.

But before the Kickstarter, she already had a reputation as an internet feminist and had a number of YouTube videos. Calling Christmas songs sexist, complaining about TV shows that aren't Buffy, and other nonsense. She posted the kickstarter announcement and then cried that she was getting threats. The press reported on those threats (without proof of course) to drive money to the kickstarter.

She asked for a figure around $7000, I think. Her white knights dumped over $100,000 in pitybux on her Kickstarter. She 'spent' it to rip footage from YouTube Let's Plays she then barely watched and made up stories about.

Over time she started pulling a Zoe, drifting away in wanderlust pursuit of other moneymaking ventures. When she was called out for this, Anita cut down and rushed the last of her videos into production. "See, I'm done with the video games series, haters." Then she tried going back to her general pop culture feminist critiques, now fueled by name recognition, only to hit a wall because her 'audience' cared more about video games than her TDS and #MeToo takes.

To add to that, Jonathan McIntosh was the main guy behind the Tropes VS Women videos. He was a talented editor, he could make games appear worse than they actually were with the right cuts. Before he worked with Feminist Frequency to make those videos, he had made a name for himself with "political mashup videos". Two that came to mind were the Buffy vs Edward video and the Donald Duck Glenn Beck video.

These videos became famous both because of their place in the fair use debate (the same applied to the Buffy video) and they helped give Jonathan clout. Once he was done with Anita, he went back to making his own videos that drew millions of views. Unsurprisingly he draws more views than Anita does.

It's not quite a happy ending yet because she still had a huge influence on how games are made in the west, until sexy female characters return to western developed games I won't consider it a full victory but at least I can take solace in the fact that she herself is no longer having the success she once was.

A recent example of the lack of sex appeal that really pissed me off is the PS4 Spider-Man game, which I otherwise loved, but Mary Jane looked so dull in it, she is supposed to be the "jackpot" and a professional model but the game version is uglier than almost every other depiction of the character.

So that's about the clearest example I can think of where feminist friendly game design made the game a little worse, part of the fantasy of Spider-Man love it or hate it is that he's a nerd who also has a hot girlfriend, making her less hot takes away some of the appeal for people who already loved the character.

I had never heard of her prior to 2012.

A stopped clock is still right twice a day but fuck Thompson still, this faggot wanted to legislate his morality about games, to violate free speech by passing actual laws, at least Anita never wanted to make her bullshit a matter of law.

Most people hadn't. Tropes vs Women was her big break. As @UnclePhil said, she originally had a modest goal in mind. I think even she was surprised by the amount of money raised.

I'm not sure they will for a while. Not just because it will take a few years for AAA games to catch up, but because American games never really had sexy women in them to begin with. Almost all the famous sexy game characters I can think of were either Japanese or European in origin, Bloodrayne is the only exception I can think of.

Another part of it is around 2008-2012 gaming (and "geek stuff" in general) became cool. Gaming was "the medium of the future". The barriers to entry had just been removed due to the popularity of Steam and Xbox Live Arcade. Any hack writers who couldn't sell a screenplay or a manuscript could use their connections to get a game development job.
"The Path", at least, wasn't a converted screenplay or manuscript, or any kind of narrative game. It looked like they were trying (and failing) to do something unique in the medium they were working with, and not just creating "mash the buttons to advance our shitty plot".

I think it's right to be suspicious of anyone trying to do something new in a medium who's got no experience in that medium. When it came to arty games from around that time, I think of games like Jonathan Blow's Braid and Jason Rohrer's games. Both guys can code, and both have played games and clearly care about them.

It's never been as prevalent in western games as it is in Japanese ones but there was more than just Bloodrayne. the Timesplitters games for example had a lot of pinup style girls.

Yeah it's hilarious that Full McIntosh was the brains behind that operation, and while he's a full blown SJW idiot I have to concede that the videos he makes are well produced, at least way better than that alcoholic bore Contrapoints.

Meanwhile Feminist Frequency after getting how many millions just pumps out a quick weekly podcast, although I can understand why Anita doesn't want to be in front of the camera anymore she frankly hit the wall.

I'm more distracted by the nerd in the back that seems to be horrified by a furry exploding.

Also is Anita wearing African jewelry?
