Polygon: "Why Gone Home is the Most Important Game of the Decade" - Polygon does it again

But unlike Chelsay, Anita was just some outsider talking some dumb boomer shit.
irrelevant, even after everyone learned she didn't play games at all she didn't lose clout
she just screamed I HAVE A VAGINA AND THIS EASY TARGET IS TO BLAME FOR ME BEING SAD SAD
and the media jumped on it

media just wants it story

Why even care what the media says or does? Just selectively take them out when they get uppity.

Yet it was being shilled hard by the gaming press as the bestest best game ever made. One of the few dissenting critic reviews called it a game searching for a story and many of the critical reviews said the same thing. A popular video and gif mocking the game involved a 47 second speedrun of the game with the "all doors unlocked" modifier.

Unsurprisingly when the Gone Home developers made another game, it sold like absolute dogshit despite even having a Game Informer cover. The gaming press might have loved gone home, but the average gamer saw it as a punchline to a joke about the gaming industry and press. It might not have been the first time gaming journalists were caught being paid off (driv3rgate, the GameSpot Kane and Lynch firings, Dorito Pope, and numerous other scandals come to mind) but it was a key turning point among indie games. It showed just how much disconnect there was between gamers and the press/developers.
I didn't give a single solitary shit about anything "gaming journalists" said after that nonsense. It was obvious that they were total fucking dipshits that hated their audience and there was no need to even suffer the annoyance of knowing their bad take on anything.
Anyone ever hear of Sunset? It was a boring walking simulator with no game play made by a bunch of pretenious assholes at a place called "Tale of Tales"
Quiet a few of the bigger gaming news websites gave it glowing reviews
Rock Paper Shotgun said:
Sunset is a beautiful game which operates on a very human and emotional scale. The relationship building can be awkward (and at one point a reaction from Ortega actually seemed to arrive before the event which precipitated it). But, despite this, Sunset is a wonderfully atmospheric slow burner and a valuable addition to a medium where the predominant approach to conflict is to just give you a big old gun and invite you to get stuck in.
IGN said:
Sunset is a meditative and ultimately quite beautiful experience in a world of civil unrest. Though its rigid mechanics occasionally disrupts the flow of the story, this is a rewarding game to be slowly savoured.
Polygon reported that the game received over double it's kickerstarter goal. So, What happened? It sold about 4,000 copies and the devs rage quit gaming.

The people who review things like this do not like or enjoy games. They don't want a challenge. They just want to write pretentious bullshit and be payed for doing nothing useful.
I miss the old grognards who'd argue they would have survived that one battle with another Counter Strike player if the muzzle flash of their enemy's rifle had been 100% accurate or historial autists who claimed "ACUTALLY ARCHERS COULDN'T SHOOT THAT FAR AND ARMOR WOULD BE MORE PROTECTIVE" in RTS games.

Completely chimping out about Anita's pretty tame content was somewhere GG completely fucked up. Zoe at least was so manifestly corrupt and degenerate that even normies can't actually support the repulsive behavior, stealing, and other shit she does. Anita is also somewhat corrupt, but even her crowdfunding irregularities are minor compared to shit Chelsea does. She may have delivered late and low quality content but she did actually deliver.

She may be a shallow intellect at best, but completely freaking out about her saying games have some misogynistic content (even if she was often just fucking wrong or dishonest about it like the obvious Zelda example) was autistic as shit and why GG looked like a bunch of fucking misogynistic autists.

Ironically, GG probably took a lot more shit about fake misogyny over Chelsea, even though she is in retrospect even MORE atrociously shitty a human being than even GG claimed.

Anita has actively made gaming worse, every female character in a western developed game now is frumpy at best or full on ugly at worst, all sex appeal has been systematically scrubbed from western developed games and it's all thanks to her.

Her criticisms of what was "sexist" or not was as shallow as a puddle, like complaining about Catwoman in Arkham City, a character who has been depicted as sexy in comics, television and movies for decades but put her in a game and nope, that's sexist, sexy is sexist.

And she was basically the very first figure in modern culture that you simply could not disagree with, no matter how carefully and respectfully you framed your arguments for why you didn't agree with her it was always, without fail, treated by some as no different than if you said you wanted to rape her and leave her body in a ditch, I saw that time and time and time and time and time again.

So I think that got a lot of people worked up because if they couldn't have an actual discussion about her, then they just wanted to troll as a "fuck you" to her protected status, while I do think people took it too far and should have just tried ignoring her, as trolling only made it worse, trolling was what she wanted, but I still she think she's a fucking cunt.

Wow, I've never heard of Sunset at all, but I see it was from the developers of 2009's The Path, which was one of the first "walking simulators"

Gimme dat clock if I missed someone already pointing it out but this article is one of a series of different vloggers writing an opinion piece, not Polygon outright claiming GH was the game of the decade. Fortnite and BotW got write-ups too.

Also +1 for thinking Gone Home was "fine". Shit like these blogs are why people shit all over it though.

Like all things tangentially related to GG, I paid zero attention to Gone Home until fairly recently. I didn't own a PC that was for gaming at the time, so I ignored modern PC games because there was no way I would ever get them to run on my machine. I noticed that it was extremely divisive, but since I paid no attention to journos at the time I didn't connect that it was the pretentious douchebags posing as game critics that liked the game and regular people that hated it.

What did become palpable to me was the influx of stupid walking simulators with little to no meaningful gameplay that only served to tell pretentious stories written by people that need to rub themselves raw over how "smart" they are. And they annoyed me because games like that aren't games, they're just repositories for failed writers who add the most minimum of interaction so they could call it a video game.

Looking at Gone Home now, the whole situation is kind of hilarious to me. Even reading the basic plot summary makes me realize how much of a fucking rip-off the game is, and I've heard plenty of horror stories of people buying it and realizing what they just played. If the developers were smart, they could have done something clever with that, but they aren't, and we're left with a pretentious game that can easily be finished in a minute if all the doors are unlocked and one that nobody outside of autistic gaming circles and stupid gaming sites will remember.

How did you quote two other people in this thread and miss the five other mentions of sunset? That's just weird.
Ah, you're correct.
I suppose I overlooked them whilst jumping between threads. Also sunset is extra shitty.

There was another shift when SJW culture took hold as well. Gaming journalism used to defend gaming from critics like Jack Thompson and back in the 2000s he was the personal lolcow of everyone in the industry. At one point he even had an idea for his own CWC's Adult Chronicles type game which got made...leading him to have a meltdown. Everyone from gamers to Penny Arcade to gaming journalists was mocking him.

Agreed.

Zoe Quinn is a more reprehensible person overall, but Anita Sarkeesian did more damage as a moral guardian and I think rubbed a lot more gamers the wrong way while also knowing how to get the media types to buy into her grift a lot more easily than Zoe did.

She was basically the left-wing Jack Thompson, but unlike Jack Thompson, she knew how to get liberal media types to white knight her. The kind of people who work in the media and the tech industry are more likely to be wooed to your side if you invoke feminism than if you invoke Jesus.

Also, Anita is a lot more "clean cut" on the surface than Zoe Quinn or Brianna Wu, and that can go a long way in making a good first impression. She doesn't have the same kind of skeletons in her closet that Zoe and Brianna have and at the end of the day, she's just a fun-hating moral guardian who's willing to profit from her moralizing.

Zoe Quinn is a legit scumbag on all levels, Anita Sarkeesian is the secular left-wing version of Jack Chick or a fundie televangelist. She's despicable in her own right, but can more easily look respectable in the eyes of normies.

Had Anita not been attacked (and then white knighted) then I don't think Zoe Quinn and Brianna Wu would have been nearly as effective in trying to push their own personal narratives.

Brianna Wu is pretty much irrelevant now outside of being a Kiwi Farms punchline and Zoe Quinn's just now starting to face some sort of comeuppance thanks to Alec Holowa's death. If they didn't throw their lot in with Anita, Quinn would've fallen a lot harder and a lot faster, while Wu would have remained in obscurity.

Honestly, if it weren't for Anita Sarkeesian, I don't think GamerGate would have been as much of a shitshow as it turned out to be in the end.

Fortunately, Anita Sarkeesian is rapidly losing her influence in the gaming industry and the media.

Her attempts to publically extort CD Projekt Red after wokescold troons bitched about Cyberpunk 2077 failed massively and neither the gaming industry nor the media came to her defense. Even as recently as last year, they would have stanned for her to at least some degree (see GenCon 2018 and The Quartering guy being physically assaulted) but she was largely ignored on all ends.

It doesn't help that Anita was hired as a consultant on several high-profile video game flops such as Anthem and Mass Effect Andromeda, and apparently there's some rumors of reprehensible behavior on her part when she was there.

Chances are that Anita's getting quietly blacklisted from the gaming industry if she hasn't been already, but they're not ready to openly say anything bad about her just yet.

I do hate what she did to effectively sanitize video games and how she was above reproach for so long, but hopefully in the coming years, her influence will be gone. Keep in mind that most AAA titles take a long time to develop, so for all we know, we may be seeing the last of her influence over the gaming industry flicker out over the next couple of years.

If Sony's censorship policies fuck them over on the PS5's release or if someone like Rockstar or CD Projekt Red can do something strong arm them into getting rid of it, then I think that will be the turning point. Things like the puritanical costume designs in MK11 and the censorship DOA 6 went through only to be trashed and excluded by the woke crowd anyway is probably going to be remembered in the coming years by future developers.

As it is, Nintendo of all companies is relaxing their censorship stances, at least on third-party games. While Mai Shiranui was kept out of Super Smash Brothers for being too sexy, that was not a decision made by Nintendo, nor was it pushed by Woke Twitter or ResetEra. Apparently, the call was made by the CERO and the ESRB since Super Smash is rated E10+ and IIRC, I read that if Super Smash Brothers had a T rating, Mai probably would have made the cut with little to no changes made to her design or costume.

Needless to say, I'm cautiously optimistic that we may see things get better for gaming and pop culture in the 2020's. But the darkest hour is always before dawn.

Anita is a has been and her influence will slowly leave gaming, I'm sure going into the future developers will be less reluctant to put some sexy back into games.

Anita/Tropes vs Women happened in 2012, GG didn't start until 2014. So unless the GG time machine is real, the timeline doesn't add up.

Anita was definitely pre-GamerGate. She was being pushed by the gaming media and was also one of the earlier examples of someone grifting with the "trolls want to literally kill me" tactic. By the time the Gamers are Dead article series ran, this had been going on for a while. There was also a trend of gaming studios paying her to give speeches there.

Looking back, she's probably best known for coining the term "Listen and Believe" after projecting that phrase onto the screen during one of her talks. She's been forgotten about and is little more than a footnote when referring to GamerGate. On the other hand her handler Jonathan McIntosh turned out to be both funnier and more influential in that sphere. His YouTube channel grabs tons of views while Anita can barely scrape 5k on a podcast episode.

I notice no outlets bothered to cover the rumor of Playsation 5 accounts not allowing you to bring your previous DLC forward or allowing Alt accounts to use that DLC. This had me very concerned

Apparently neither is true and sony may just be restructuring how main account work, and true alternate accounts will have all the privileges of the main with supposedly the ability to transfer saves(and maybe trophies). Basically stuff like QOL changes if you stream and want to keep the base account private or wanting to make a different base account and not losing access to your DLC and other digital stuff, you also wouldn't need a separate email if I understand it right.

Basically you just wouldn't need to make a fully separate account and have it rely on having a primary PS4 under the main. If you and a sibling still have multiple accounts on the same system they can still draw from the DLC on the primary but they can't draw data from the new alternate account.

Like I have a ton of pre-order DLC that you can't just rebuy.

I had to go to like the deepest darkest depths of moon language tech forums to find the answers. For like a good half day this had me concerned, I don't like further restrictions being put on stuff that doesn't have a physical backup and you can't even purchase digitally. But it sounds like nothing that's going to infringe on user's ability to access their software.

It really would be nice if Polygon and others actually covered the hardware end to things instead of social issues or fucking lists of their favorite games. How about making videos explaining how shit works?

As she should be. She had little, if anything to do with gamergate outside of being someone the press would shill and run interference for, and being part of the inspiration for the Law and Order GamerGate episode.

You don't want that.
The PlayStation 4 power and eject buttons are still confusing people, three years later
What the heck do those buttons do?

Agreed on the fact that Anita largely predated GamerGate, but she had some involvement and more importantly, because she was the focus of a previous controversy, she could help spin the narrative in favor of people like Quinn and Wu, even if it was mostly done indirectly.
