Null's rate system experiment was started only a few hours following me having made this post on /cow/. I wasn't really joking though, the rate system isn't perfect at the moment and has been causing some less than desirable side effects. Animosity between Null and myself has been a touch higher than I'd like lately, but I think he's taken a fantastic approach here with the rate system experiments and is overall a site topic that we do in fact see eye-to-eye on.

The current state of having all the ratings enabled yet without alerts may be the exact compromise needed to rid the obsession with rates. And the fact that positive ratings had to be SO quickly reenabled due to the reaction it caused is the case-in-point itself for needing to wean the community off of their coked-up reward pathways stimulated by gold stars, pink hearts, and little red boxes with alert numbers in them.

The first step towards curing addiction is admittance fam :heart-full:
Baby steps. I want to keep rates for SURE, just not exactly as they were.

Great work Null.
glaive did 23/10 confirmed

Keep agree to cut down on +1s, THISes, etc. Get rid of Disagree - if someone disagrees, they should post why and not hide behind a rating. Keep like, get rid of dislike for the same reasons. Get rid of Dumb or Autistic because they kinda fit the same niche. Keep the rest.

That's not a bad idea. If you got rid of disagree and dumb it would be better.

BUT you should keep autistic, cus lets face it- we're the farms and we're in the autism business.

No need to coddle anyone. If someone wants a community that won't criticize them, they have plenty of other options outside of the farms.

Some people just deserve ridicule, or at the very least a dislike.
I can quite literally no longer count how many times I've given someone a negative rating.

Now that Null has given in part way I formally request he either bring back rating notifications for everyone or just for me because I find seeing the notification alert gives me fulfillment in an otherwise meaningless life.

Eh? People seriously went mad over not being able to rate positively? I thought most of that was joking; shows what I know I guess.

In other news, I'm very happy I'm not getting mobbed with alerts about all the agrees I pile up due to reaffirming shit we already know about; feels quite good actually.

i don't really rate posts much or pay attention to ratings in general, so take heart:

any rates from me are not the stray variety, it's because i genuinely think you were interesting/funny and took two seconds to select a sticker. or i genuinely think your post was the stupidest shit since the XFL and felt the need to passive-aggressively inform you of this

anyway what i'm trying to say is that nice meme needs to make a fucking sound null

I can see where Null is coming from when it comes to the ratings system being a problem when it puts people off keeping their posts up because they don't want to receive more negative ratings. Sometimes however that can be a good thing, a negative rating can be a good way of letting a poster know they're being silly without someone needing to actually go out off their way to tell them and clog up the thread.

Ultimately I think the ratings system is a good idea, it's more that some posters need to relax and not take the ratings they receive so seriously. I have to admit Ive been irritated before at, say being rated power level when I never said anything about my personal life in the post but really ratings don't matter.

With that said the only changes Id probably make to the ratings system are pretty minor. I always view the like rating as just being a less enthusiastic version of the winner rating and I think dislike is covered by dumb or another negative rating so I would probably remove it too if it were down to me

Why don't we just make it impossible to delete your posts after a certain window of time
The problem with that being that people will rate your post dumb immediately if it's dumb. People aren't going to wait some arbitrary amount of time to call you out.

Didn't Null make a big deal about not giving a shit what /cow/ thinks a while back? Honestly I'm not even sure if I want to be part of a community that's at the whim of the turbo autists on /cow/

That single post sparked a bigger site change than the entire lifespan of our own Feedback board. Sparked might be an overstatement though, as he's spoken about many similar rate system issues before. It did not challenge or change his opinion.

However the timing is pretty damn telling that it was at least read along with some of the subsequent posts about rates which were not just random disinformation and teasing.
Which is what 90% of /cow/ is.

Null needs to grow a pair and own his community. Who gives a shit what /cow/ thinks?
