Honestly, I can just see this as an excuse for members to be mean to each other.
if it does get used this way constantly can always change it. i would like to know when people disagree with me on stuff, StallChaser's reply to my PDK analysis thread post was really good and i would like more people giving critical input even if it's just pressing a disagree or dumb button.

Anonymous negative voting options is going to kill discourse. Instead of a conversation branching out from point/counterpoint, we now have kindergarten stickers to replace it. I have to say, I prefer the old system.
I have a specific point to make about your post, so I am replying to it directly.

If I didn't feel adamant enough about voicing my opinion, or I didn't have a strong, cohesive point to make, I may have just opted to "Disagree" the post instead.

My hope here is that people will use the buttons instead of making posts that add nothing. Using your post as an example, someone marked it "dumb". Imagine if he just quoted it and said "this is dumb". That's like, half of our forum content. It doesn't really add anything or contribute to discussion at all. People inherently want to have their opinions registered, though, so having the placebo of a button may help with finding middle ground.

If I'm reading you right, you're saying the buttons will stop people from making well thought out posts (perhaps like this one). It won't.

I'm saying conversations have a flow. I say something, you disagree and say why, and we both lay out our supporting evidence. If, instead, I say something and you press a button that puts a little icon that indicates you (but who knows who) disagree then there is no conversation. Instead of discourse, we're just ranting into the aether and passing out stickers.

Granted it could be used to clean up shitposts, but I highly doubt it will have much impact in that area. The people who use these systems as intended aren't the people shitposting. Most people making stupid comments don't want to convey an opinion, they want attention. Adding an anonymous icon to a post doesn't scratch that itch so they'll probably do both. Instead it's going to crush the spontaneous conversations and debates that arise from people having to articulate the hows and whys of their disagreements. Maybe neither of us realize the direction the conversation might take if you voice your opinion, but we'll never know if the only effect your disagreement will have is adding some tacky icon to the bottom of the post.

Full disclosure: I also think the icons looks gaudy and childish, but my primarily objection is the effect it's going to have on conversations.

I hope this doesn't end up with people jerking each other off and/or shitting on each other for no apparent reason.

Of course, that seems a likely outcome. At least we'll get to see a fair deal of tribalism and cliquey nonsense.
...How would that happen? How would we get cliques from ratings? Obviously we're going to abuse it because we're all autistic as hell, but Facepunch has been using this exact system for years and none of that shit you mentioned ever happened.

I've seen it happen on other boards, this just seems a glorified version of the simple like/dislike deal. But this board is a little different than others, so I have no idea what might actually happen. Of course, all the ratings and likes were available for all to see, and that didn't really help with honest feedback.

On the contrary, I've noticed specific people griping about the system because their posts have been tagged as Dumb or A-Log. These are the exact kinds of people I'd want to see affected by such information. In only a few hours, the feedback specific people have gotten, people who are accepted and tolerated but often say things which are not well received, are realizing it. If this has any long-term impact has yet to be seen.

I just don't see this happening. At all. Anywhere. People are still going on as they would, and third parties + lurkers are utilizing the system. People who might be inclined to say very little are instead showing support without posting.

Complicated ideas that need to be communicated will continue to be. This conversation we're having right now is proof of that. Nobody is going to stop saying things that need to be said in favor of a button that offers no additional information.

Add .dark_postrating to your adblock. It will remove the bar.
Disable rating notifications in your user settings.

You will immediately be "opted out" of the system. You won't see people's ratings, you won't be able to rate, you won't get notifications about people rating you. Do that, and tell me if you notice a difference.

It's not the end of the world people. Have fun with it. Also, who takes their comments about retards on the internet that seriously
