Post the old YouTube fads that you miss... - as well as the ones you don't.

This keeps disappearing every once in a while, but this is probably my favorite YTP ever.

Kiwis talking about fads that existed only 5 or so years ago makes me feel old. (:_(

I'm not sure if "fad" is the right term for this, but one of my favorite things to do on YouTube back in the day was watch people whose content just aped The Angry Video Game Nerd, The Nostalgia Critic, Mystery Science Theater, and the other sort of "genre-defining" commentators and reviewers that were popular in that era. You'd just have people carbon-copying a format or trope without understanding what made it successful and the end result was just embarrassing. "The (Adjective) Video Game (Noun)" and "The (Noun) Critic". I think the term is "playing the notes but not understanding the music"?

Early video game shows were also a real mixed bag. I remember when GameLife debuted. It was one hell of a ride. Down the Rabbit Hole has a great episode about them:

Billy Mays :( (and old YTP from the 2008-2010 era in general)

I'm sure some of my 2007-2008 era YTP's are somewhere on YouTube still (though would be massive powerleveling if I posted them). So probably me too.

Originally I came up with this thread for the sake of bitching about gosh darn capitalism nowadays, but then I remember how hard charlie bit my finger and david goes to the dentist got milked and I realized that selling out has always been the core value of the godless land we call YouTube.

So instead of whining about the old days before I’ve even hit my thirties, I’d like to ask you guys what memories you cherish about YouTube’s beginnings? For me I was probably in elementary/middle school when YouTube was just getting popular, so there’s a lot to look back on.

For starters:
  • Anything abridged. NTAS, Hellsing abridged, Friendship is Witchcraft, Sailor Moon abridged, Yugioh The Abridged Series, 50% Off, etc etc. I would be lying if I said that shit didn’t crack me up to this day.
  • (you’ll notice a disgusting amount of naruto on this list, don’t @ me I was like ten) those fucking “dating games” with the doors?? It would basically be a long list of numbers with a different picture of a door for each number, and whichever door you pick would be your naruto boyfriend. I would pick like three numbers just in case because the devastation of getting Shino was too much for my fragile boycrazy brain.
  • Just whole ass episodes of anime right there on YouTube, usually in three parts. I binge watched the entire series of Lucky Star in like two days.
  • This is just basic bitch stuff, but of course the AMVs with the most popular Cascada songs (and like 300 videos putting Kakashi and Bad Boy together for some reason)
  • Every single cover of Bad Apple, U.N. Owen was her etc. you could imagine. Bad Apple Windows 7 remix, Bad Apple symphonic metal remix (everything had a symphonic remix) and this was before that shit was ironic like all the “this song but it’s played on this whacky thing
  • A lot of stuff that was ripped from new grounds, like Mario Reloaded and Sonic Shorts
That’s about all I can remember right now, but what about you? What do you remember about YouTube that you probably won’t get nowadays?

This is peak Deep Thoughts, right here. I miss falling down the gang-stalking rabbit hole, and conspiracy theory rabbit holes in general. Also, the hey-day of TFL Bill and Duane. And, you know, being able to find what you're fucking looking for with a simple search instead of having to VPN to Timbuktu just to access news about your own country.

The themes, you could put custom background images, I don't remember if they had custom headers, probably? But it was really neat even if everyone had super tacky shit. I think I had some casino themed one because I wanted my channel to be gothic themed, even though all I did was upload Maplestory AMVs...
