Does anyone have any advice on how to start gesture drawing? I feel kind of overwhelmed by just looking at a picture and letting my hand just do its thing.
sketch for your troubles

Sketching hands as imple geometrical shapes at first is pretty helpful I think. I also usually sketch my hands as pentagons rather than squares to account for how there's a little slope on your hand starting after your middle finger, making your pinky connect to your palm at a lower point compared to the rest of your fingers. Sketching fingers as cylindrical shapes is also useful, since it helps you keep track of the direction each finger is looking and what part of each phalanges are covered by the others. Keeping in mid how much distance there is between your fngers depending on how much you stretch them is also a good idea.
As for emotive gesturing, I usually like to just think about what expression I associate with each gesture. Sometimes I imagine a facial expression, and the try to think of what pose would go with it the best. Knowing the personality traits of the characters you draw can also help, like whether they're introverted or extroverted, they body language, stuff like that.
Hope this helps.
