Quick sketch of Asuka I did, focusing on a few aspects:
- Color palette; color has always been my weak spot, but with my last few drawings I feel my "eye" for color has improved significantly. I didn't use any color references for this and I think the palette I arrived at is still pretty aesthetically pleasing.
- Posing; I've posted in the art critique thread complaining about how "stiff" and lifeless the posing in my drawings used to look, and I think it's because I used to draw things from a very "mechanical" viewpoint, considering each limb as something that is moved individually. Now, I've switched to first defining a rough envelope for the overall shape of the pose, and then filling in anatomy into that envelope. It results in poses that just look much more natural and expressive. As above I don't use any references for poses because I feel like doing everything from scratch gives me a better fundamental understanding of things.
- Cloth folds; I specifically chose this outfit for the loose top. Cloth is another weakness of mine and I've always sort of bullshitted it, so here I tried to define the folds in a more "scientific" manner. I think I got them mostly right.
- Abstract backgrounds so my figures aren't just standing on blank white. At some point I do want to start drawing actual scenes but for now I'm content to stick with just drawing figures to improve my posing/shading/anatomy without having to worry about composition on top of it.

This was mostly just a quick shading study but I may clean up the linework and shading and properly finish it because I actually quite like how the rough version turned out.

Definitely the next big thing I need to work on is drawing expressive faces. It's the only part I had to use a reference for because I absolutely suck at doing facial expressions. But the dramatic improvement I've felt in the other areas I've mentioned gives me hope that all I need is some study and practice to "get" it.
