I don't really see it like that, to be honest. It's just a particular style, it doesn't mean you can't give your characters personality. Maybe the issue was actually that you didn't have any personality for this specific character other than "anime-esque." If you judge the entire genre by generic moe harem anime, then you're missing out on a lot, just like you would if you judged all fantasy as being Tolkien or Rowling rip-offs.I drew an anime inspired cat girl for a friend

Drawing this was fun but it really helped entrench my disdain for anime styles in general. I had to disregard so much of what I knew about basic anatomy, hair, clothing and character makeup etc to make the illustration 'sit' right with the style.I found myself struggling to talk about how I was giving personality to this character because there was no personality. Her personality was supposed to come from her outward appearance and it made the act of conceptualising the piece really bland.
Anime art is, above all, boring to me. It's just the same cute body types and jarring eye colors and unassuming personalities that make characters pretty playthings for the viewer. I will gladly not be revisiting it.
