Ideally you want something that has a cone facing down about halfway up. Metal so they can't dig in and your good. We have a lot of birds that go for the suet we put out. You might get a feeder that has a cage for it, but we continued to use our old one since it has a solid back so that they can get it from the front but other birds can only do the sides. If you want to feed woodpeckers you can get a feeder made of chicken-wire and put full peanuts in the shells; woodpeckers can get through the shells but not other birds so you can feed only them if that's your thing. If you put out hummingbird feeders keeping them away from the other feeders helps (and you can feed bees too!) If you can afford it have a bigger feeder for sunflower seeds, and a smaller one with mixed seeds. (Our backyard runs 2 scoops of sunflower seeds to 1 of the mixed feed a day, especially this time of the year.)
