I found Boogie's thoughts on this kind of interesting, he generally hates preordering because he'd rather people don't waste their money on possibly crappy games. He also notes that these days Vidya is closer to $90 up front to make, rather than $60 hence the sudden explosion of Day 1 DLC.
End of the day I think it's all about what you get out of it. For me? Gaming is my primary hobby and I love playing games. I love exploring the story and such.
I tend to preorder games if they're from developers I like or trust, or if the concept genuinely intrigues me. So for example I preordered both Rise of the Tomb Raider and The Division. I do it as a note of faith in the devs to give me something entertaining, which general rule of thumb is they do. I was very pleased by both and thus felt the money I handed over was justly spent. I also preordered the Vanishing of Ethan Carter because, again the concept intrigued and did not disappoint. Cities Skylines also fell to my pre-order bias and dear god was I glad.
One of the weird things I've found it I don't tend to come across the weird bugs a lot of folks do, dunno why. I'm either lucky as hell or one of the most boring vidya players in human history.
That being said, I can be a little more discerning when I need to be. I was sorely tempted to buy Arkham Knight on a preorder having massively enjoyed both City and Asylum. I'm very glad I chose to hold back and have yet to bother buying the game as WB has steadfastly refused to properly fix the damn thing. Other times this can fail miserably. I was stupid enough to pre-order Simcity. It was the last EA game I bothered with.
But like everyone else, I love me some steam sales. That tends to be when I experiment a bit more and buy stuff to see if a new genre or weird game may tickle my fancy. I found my love for "Walking Sims" started thanks to an impulse buy during a sale. Not looked back since.
