Predator 5 announced - Why can't they leave this fucking franchise just rest in peace?

The flinklock pistol from Predator 2 could have set up the Predator in pre-20th Century setting for the next film installment. Instead, thanks to the Alien skull, we got that inevitable crossover on the big screen a decade later.
There's a comic that does that too. I've always said this, probably in this thread too, but you could do tons of things with the Predator. Set it during pirate times, the old west, samurai era, Predator VS ISIS or Al Queda, etc. Beyond that you can explore the Predator homeworld and show how their warrior society operates or show warring Predator tribes like in part 3 (PredatorS).

This is a step in the right direction -all things considered- but I don't hold out much in the way of hope.

The flintlock was definitely meant to set up a third film I feel, but for whatever reason it never happened.

Now we're finally getting a Predator movie set in the past and it looks like shit.

I doubt that. And I've never read anything saying that a prequel was set to happen. The one concept that kept coming up was setting the 3rd movie back in the jungle and at one part it was going to star the wrestler Chyna (yes, really). The whole back to the jungle concept was Rodriguez' idea with the game preserve planet which eventually became the 3rd movie almost 20 years later.

The flintlock was just a way of explaining that the Predators have been coming to Earth for a very, VERY long time.

I'm not saying any specific plans had been made or scripts written, I'm just saying the writers put that in the script as a seed for a potential future movie, same reason they put in an Alien skull.

Obviously it was also meant to make it clear that the Predators had been visiting Earth for a long time, but again, how is that not a seed for a potential future movie?

Lemme actually your ass:

Well, AKKKTUALLY you could say the end line from Danny Glover "Don't worry asshole, you'll get another chance." Is sequel bait by it self, it's not just the flintlock.

Secondly, the Alien skull was put there by the effects crew. And, what's more, they got the idea to put the Alien skull there because someone brought the Alien VS Predator comic book to the set and after clearing it with Fox they added the skull as a little easter egg. It wasn't setup for anything. It was years after that where Fox was exploring doing an AvP movie and it got scrapped due to the under performance of Alien 3 and Predator 2 plus the producers for both franchises not getting along with each other.

I wasn't aware of the story behind the skull, but I think my point about the pistol still stands and sure, you can look at Danny Glover's line as sequel bait too.

In case I'm not clear I'm not saying any third movie would be directly about whoever owned that pistol, although it could be, just that introducing the idea that the Predators have been visiting Earth for a long time is obviously meant to leave it open for any sort of Predator story set in the past, although again I'm not saying there were any specific plans or scripts after the second movie, it was just put there in the hopes it could lead to that.

At any rate I miss that era when sequels were good, Aliens, Robocop 2, Predator 2, Terminator 2, all worthy follow ups if not better than the original in some cases (namely Aliens and T2), that all came to a close with Alien 3, which sucked and none of those franchises have been as good since.

Somewhere out there though is alternate universe where we did get awesome third and maybe even forth movies in these franchises.

Weirdly enough, the thing with the bear harkens back to the Predator Primal comic:

The comic is pretty bad despite the art being good. A Predator who is over the hill kills a cub and engages with the mother and dies to a god damn bear.

Overall, I have mixed feelings. I get the feeling we're going to spend a lot of time with this chick and the last 20-30 minutes will just be exactly like the final 20-30 minutes of the original movie but with an Indian chick. The cinematography looks cheap at times. There might be some good carnage tho. It would be impressive if it's worse than the last movie.
I doubt it was as bad as the multi part Predator vs. Batman. Crossovers were all the rage in the 90s.

The first Batman VS Predator was pretty good despite the Predator being written as just an evil alien that kills anyone. The sequels sucked.

I took it as Predator was just an extra-galactic Bane in those comics. I really didn't enjoy any of them.

That's modern mega-franchise thinking. "OMG IS THAT CAPTAIN AMERICAS SHIELD/THE BITE OF '87!!?!?"
Gina Davis fighting predators might have been better than that crappy movie she made, I'll give you that.

Every big company wants to revive a franchise for a new generation, only because they know how successful shit like MCU, Star Wars and Reddit are, so putting meta references and self-aware commentary. It's very agonizing.

Yes, but Predator 2 is older than Iron Man 1, before that thinking. They made blockbuster movies without blatant sequel hooks and the flintlock from Predator 2 might look like sequel bait NOW but I really don't think they were planning on making Predators of the Caribbean.

It turns out Hulu is offering the option to watch the movie in the Comanche language. As the link tweet points out, why wasn't the trailer released with the Comanche language?
That's a nice touch. I wouldn't mind watching it with Comanche audio and subtitles. It's just a gimmick, but all things considered, not a bad one.
Though I can understand that given the rarity of Comanche speakers, it's really rather pointless.

The perfect modern english felt a bit out of place(maybe I'm going woke) but I wouldn't mind if it was like Apocalypto.

Yeah, I thought it felt kinda weird, too. Watching it with subtitles might suck for all the reading you'll have to do, but it might make the movie a whole lot more atmospheric.
Well, that would still be putting lipstick on a pig, given that I expect it to be terrible, but you know... with a movie that's good, it might be worth it.

Wouldn't it be funny if someone redubbed the whole movie with "Me Tarzan you Jane"-style dialogue? Think 1940s Bugs Bunny cartoons.
