Preservetube - A Youtube archival site.

  • 🐕 I am attempting to get the site runnning as fast as possible. If you are experiencing slow page load times, please report it.
I had several issues with it, including only halfway archiving channels instead of archiving all of the videos. the aforementioned audio issues, the lack of ability to archive in lower frame rates to save bandwidth, or the ability to save just audio like regular yt-dlp, also the lack of ways to find and download videos, please fix these issues. @PreserveTube

Has the site been saving videos in shit quality for anyone else? I have a few videos that are only a minute long in length and before they would save in 720p quality if they weren'ttoo long, but now they're all saving in 360p or less.
It's watchable sure and gets the job done in archiving, but some details would be illegible to read for the finer details with all the artifacts.

@PreserveTube Bro I just saved a video on that site, why is it saving in fucking 144p???? :cringe:

I could settle for 720p or 360p depending on the length and size, but this is fucking absurd.

YouTube is slowly rolling out new ways to block sites and programs from downloading videos. One of the ways is splitting video and audio now across all video resolutions. Meaning even 360p videos will have a separate audio track. Making it far more difficult for the average person to download a complete file. And they are also just flat out blocking people from downloading any files at all including doing things like IP banning.

Big fan of projects like these, but I fear for its longevity for the same reason Youtube has no competition - storage cost.
Admin, if you're still around, is this costing you a lot currently, and how are you going to deal with it years down the line, or if there's a sudden burst in popularity and the number of submissions goes up considerably?

Still having issues with archiving older videos and playlists. I can confirm old playlists that have "PL" in the link (after the = in playlist?list=) makes the site think its not a youtube link and won't archive it. Even if I go through the playlist and save videos individually, there's almost always one video in the entire playlist that just refuses to be archived no matter what, it just stops when close to uploading and gives me a websocket 1005 error.

I don't want to start categorizing link to the video. Since that site search engine does not work for a certain video. Best way to find a certain video is from a old YouTube link.

I don't know if it's by design but I have never succeeded in archiving a video past 2 hours long. It always farts out. The longer the video is, the more likely the connection is to error out, and starting at around 2 hours it seems like it will always fail.

I was wondering:
- does it save unlisted videos without a link, so long as you archive the channel?
- does it save privated videos if you have the link?

I was wondering:
>does it save unlisted videos without a link, so long as you archive the channel?
Probably not, I don't see how it would find unlisted videos just by the channel. That's kind of the point of it being unlisted. If you feed it an unlisted video link, it will save as usual.
>does it save privated videos if you have the link?
Nope. Tried.

Bro I just saved a video on that site, why is it saving in fucking 144p???? :cringe:
Bug tracked under https://github.com/preservetube/preservetube/issues/27
Can you give any insight into this change?
The archive has grown to 50TB, which is getting pretty expensive, though not crazy expensive. I’ve got enough funds to keep it running for a few centuries (at its current size), but I figured it was worth a shot trying some ads. Google Ads, for obvious reasons, rejected the website, so the only options left were the shadier advertisers.

So far, the ads aren’t doing great. I knew a lot of users would have ad blockers, but not this many. I’ll probably turn them off again sometime next week.
Isn't the operator of preservetube the same tranny that used to operate spy.pet?
All I have to say is that KF has some great resources for detransitioners. Really helps with zooming out.
