Privacy Checkup 2021

It can be really surprising the kind of useless or vague information is enough to dox someone. I've used information like the fact that they don't drive or the Costco is 10 minutes from the house or that they live on the top floor to figure out peoples' addresses. Stuff that one might think is safe enough to share online.

Which sucks because some of my favorite posts here are from people with highly specific information that they list off just to prove how fucking stupid a cow is.

Occasionally it's good to drop false information. "I live in Nebraska" when I actually live in XYZ. Make up information. You shouldn't be saying anything identifiable but if you need to, embellish or make shit up a little. Lie about your hobbies too. It takes one person connecting the dots.

Keep two accounts for each website is a good idea in general, depending on what website it is. Occasionally delete an account and rotate to a new one if you don't just rotate usernames. If you're on Discord you should occasionally purge all your messages
It's good advice, but nobody is going to believe it coming from you, man.

>nullykins shills Brave today
>my BAT shitcoins are now worth more than a dollar each

Really activates the old almonds.
He likes the stock.

I strongly advise against joining offsite, KF-adjacent groups (like Discord) because those people aren't your fucking friends, and when they dox you, it somehow always becomes my problem.
Does this include the MATI discord?

Haven't seen it brought up, but virtual machines are another good way to help with privacy. Especially Linux distros (Kali and Parrot specifically)
But if you suffer from paranoid schizophrenia, read up on TailsOS or Whonix.

It's still a good idea to use a VPN before Tor while doing sensitive stuff. Just look at how this guy got caught. If he'd been using a VPN he would have had a lot more plausible deniability.
Bomb hoaxer used TOR, FBI checks the logs and he's probably the only Harvard TOR user at the time the communications took place and, confesses to his crimes. I'm guessing the FBI would use a similar tactic if TOR was used to facilitate other crimes, throw out a dragnet and see who was connected to the TOR network at the time of an offense occurred.

Hence why using a VPN to hide your Tor traffic while doing sensitive stuff is a worthwhile increase in security.

Is there any tangible advantage to using a VPN + proxy? The VPN I have, PIA, has an optional proxy you can turn on in addition to the VPN. I assume the answer is yes, but I remember hearing somewhere that using both can cause a leak. I can never get a clear answer because search engine results for anything even remotely related to a VPN or proxy are just endless pages of shilling.

Had he used a VPN + TOR the FBI would be able to see that the threat came from the TOR network, but upon checking Harvard's logs, nobody used TOR at the time but some students used VPNs. Would have made the investigation harder unless they investigated further to see if any students recently downloaded TOR without using a VPN.

I guess the best advice is not to use TOR or VPNs for illegal purposes then you don't have to look over you shoulder.

Tor does more than mask your IP. It spoofs your user agent so every Tor user looks exactly the same. Regardless of whether you're on Windows, Linux, or some BSD, the websites you connect to will see you as using Windows 10. There's also some user.js (Firefox settings) modifications done as well that disables/modifies the more vulnerable features of the browser, "hardening" it. A VPN will only hide your IP. It does nothing to hide what browser, OS, and hardware you are using.

Nothing in this thread will help you hide from government entities. If that's your threat model you should spend your time somewhere else.

It doesn't matter what security you go through though if you're a part of off-site (and even on-site) groups like @Null has talked about and release all your personal information. I've lurked long enough to see people get pwned from talking to faggots on Discord and making the mistake of thinking they are their friends and not decrepit people on the internet who remember anything and everything you've told them to spread to their other "friends". People should spend more time laughing at lolcows and less time bitching about the site and crying to their friends about how Noool is literally hitler and banned circlejerk celebrity/female user #8292432.
