Am I the only one who preferred "Unnamed battle theme #10" over Saikai as a Canto song? Saikai feels more like an anime ending theme than a culmination of the tragedy of Ryoshu's life while the other is absolute S.A.N.G.R.I.A.

Crazy, but me aswell. After hearing it for the first time I thought it was the instrumental and the final stage would give it lyrics. Saikai is still really emotional but I feel like this could have hit even harder.

Not a big fan of Saikai either, though that may be because I find Cassie Wei's voice to be like nails on a chalkboard. Studio E.I.M have always just completely shat on the Milli when it comes to music for me.
With Saikai specifically though I remember when the song got leaked around the time Rien's sprites were put into the files (months before the Canto by the way) and there were constant arguments whether or not Saikai was some AI generated song from how absurd the lyrics and song were. I remember all the "S is for Sayonara hana de shiko" posting. Hilarious times.

Saikai sounds more like theme song from Rien's perspective than Ryoshu's. Which is one of the issues of the Canto that he was more of a spotlight character.

Yeah, Ryoshu's Canto was pretty animish and tried to be overly dramatic, but thankfully, I can leak what happens in the next Canto. Here is a brief part:
-----------------------

President of N Corp: "Meursault, you are charged with not caring for your mother, the Queen of NCorp, when she died! How do you plead, guilty or guilty?"

*Suddenly, a werewolf bursts into the courtroom while a kick ass guitar plays - It's like Lei Heng's music but way more cool*
President of N Corp: "What? What is this baulderdash?!"

Meursault: Heh. That's why. She was turned into a werewolf by that A-Corp man on the beach. I didn't have the heart before... but... It's Time - TO PUT THE DOGS OUT!

*Another werewolf pops out, harder guitar music happens.*

Lei Heng: Heh... Looks like you brought me back for a good fight. Time to neuter some dog weiners.

*Insane explosions happen while the sweepers destroy everything in the background, random dudes in the background are doing flips and shooting guns*

Meursault: I finally get it. An Absurd universe requires an ABSURD MAN! *Proceed to rip off his shirt like Hulk-hogan and suplex his mom.

Mili sort of feels like if she doesn't really "get it" none of her oddities come together and instead they detract. Children of the City is basically Sleep Walk Metropolis which is basically a femcel negativeXP song and it slaps but "Hero" feels like it was made to only work within the timing of the boss fights.

I'll give Mili this though, the instrumentals are usually good, I don't mind alot of their instrumentals, its just when Cassie starts opening her mouth is when I start tuning out.

I used to be a much bigger fan of her work back in the day when she made original songs.
She especially used to be good at skitzoid songs. Songs built around "morbid fairy tales". Summoning 101, Galahad, Bathtub Mermaid, Mushrooms, etc. Pull her out of this and you have modern Mili.
This here is a great example of "Modern Mili". The Esports line makes me wanna blow my brains out all over the wall and half the song's lyrics ruin the vibe. Her lyrics have gotten much worse and it makes me wonder if she even gives a shit anymore. And I think direction is a big problem too, she's often angled against her strengths and forced to make "high impact" songs. They don't fit her at all.
And this includes alot of Limbus Company "finale" songs. Some are pretty alright (I actually like Hero, fits the idea well), but stuff like Saikai is a mixed bag. Limbus leans too hard onto Mili when she's more of a specialist (etc LoR main theme she fits)

I still listen to this one often. Kinda speaks volume to how well this one stands on it's own. Especially with the smaller lullaby sections that sell the loss more than anything. Does better than most of the dialogue of this canto.

The version of SAIKAI made by Ryoshu, Araya, and Rien's VAs sounds way better in my opinion.https://youtube.com/watch?v=0WA2NX4kPSI
Why. Why didn't we get this version? This SHOULD of been the ingame version. I mean ffs it sells the feeling so much more to hear the actual characters singing this as they clash one last time. Especially with Rien's part coming in. Would of been fucking PERFECT.

BRUH.

There's some really strong ones, like Between Two Worlds and Patches of Violet. I wonder if it's a mix of burnout and just not meshing well with the subject matter. I think SAIKAI works stronger as an outright character VA song (but then again songs by character VAs often automatically turn into top tier tracks in games).

In general Studio EIM are extremely consistent now with high quality tracks too, especially with the most recent canto, so the standards for Mili tracks has also gotten far higher too.

Inbetween worlds is definitely one of those "Wow this is a morbid twisted concept" which is why it fits so much better for her. It's alot like Bathtub in a way. Showing Kramer's inner sin evoked outward.
(Also I wish instead of the actual design we got for Kramer, we got the cover as the design. Would of been more trippy, just throw in the slight gore horror elements.)

As for Patches as Violet, she was channelling ALOT of Galahad with it. Especially with the weirder instrumentation and almost sci fi elements. And it feels less like a "ANIME HYPE FINAL BOSS" theme and more like a tragic fall. Which is why Saikai feels so weird, she could of easily channeled this energy but just didn't?
It's why I think direction is one of the issues. But I think burnout is a big issue for her. She apparently produced like 5-8 songs in a block for different studios at the time (read the descriptions of a few of the newer songs). And they got released in a staggered delayed way. I have no doubts in my mind that caused a decline in quality. But it kinda feels like all her songs are becoming a bit like this. I'm worried that the only songs that will even be remotely like her old works will be long after all this anime op shit stops.

The other strong song from Mili is Fly, My Wings.
In my opinion Hero is pretty weak (mostly because the game version has ONE, TWO, ONE TWO THREE FOUR repeat constantly to the point it's very annoying for a fight as long as that). SAIKAI is weak too unless you consider the character VA version. TIAN TIAN is... okay? It's hard for me to say, ending is really strong with the ending animation of the fight too, though.

Mind you, every song would automatically become extremely good with a character VA version. I bet Patches would be really damn good if there was a version with a Heathcliff/Cathy VA dueting.

I do really appreciate they try to make everything different though, it makes final fights feel more personal than if it were "generic anime game final boss OST number 1254", even if the Mili songs can end up weak.

Once the la la la's started kicking in I really thought it was the mili song

let me throw my hat into the ring

I think Gone Angels fits a lot with (LITERALLY ME) going on a rampage. It's just a shame everything after The Reception of the Black Silence makes Ruina's ending fall off a cliff.
