I usually avoid fandom discourse but when I do encounter it, the people I see claiming to support free speech are all vehemently against it when it comes to someone sharing a different political or social opinion. For example, there are valid criticisms of pornography, especially the exploitation of women and the treatment of those who leave the porn industry. The sex trade is largely due to sex trafficking and OnlyFans 'models' are bougie women with the privilege to make their own content. Speaking of, when OnlyFans almost removed adult content, shippers shrieked to the high heavens. Some reblogged attacks against Laila Mickelwhaite.

Saying these things would make me an 'anti', though I honestly don't care provided the art is drawn well, and the fanfics are written well. Most fans are mature to age up characters and treat sensitive topics accordingly. To many shippers, like the ones listed above, any valid criticism is seen as a personal attack.

If you support free speech, then you would engage with those nasty TERFs and SWERFs, you wouldn't dismiss their criticisms out of hand. Plus, it wasn't antis who attacked Josh Keaton from Voltron - those were shippers. Reylos were the ones who harassed the actors (and even then, some will deny it and argue it was a white supremacist plot). Every single one of these people will engage in cancel culture - the trick is to find what political schtick they are passionate about. For antis, it's pedophilia, for shippers, it's TERFs and prostitution.

It's one thing to write a story that has themes of sexual abuse or mentions of it. But JUST making stories about sexual abuse, child rape, torture, all that, is not equivalent in any way. You're just a sick fuck.

I have seen some proshippers advocate for written child sex 'just for the sake of it' because...well, it's fiction. They say that while getting mad at Shadman. To be fair, writing about your experiences is a relatively common piece of advice I’ve heard parroted by several therapists, as it can help with processing the related emotions. However, it generally comes with the unspoken stipulation that whatever you write remains private and is only shared with said therapist and maybe very close acquaintances, if even that.

Sometimes I feel like these people hear of the concept of writing down their experiences as a coping mechanism and then try to rationalize that their fanfic where Dipper gets sodomized by the triangle dude from Gravity Falls is pretty much the same thing. And, hell, if they were writing that kind of shit but keeping it their horrible little secret, whatever. But pretty much every “pro-ship” person I’ve encountered makes their underage sex fanfic an identity, and acts like you threatened to hate-crime them if you think that jerking it to that kind of content is, maybe, just a little bit weird.

The hypocrisy point brought up earlier in thread is a really good point too. For how much they crow about free speech, you know these people would shit themselves if they saw someone reading The Turner Diaries or even a milquetoast, vaguely right-wing book written by a Republican figurehead. Their love for free speech only extends as far as whatever gets their rocks off or fits with current progressive talking points, which is something pretty much universal with terminally online twitter users.

It's something that irks me too. Coping mechanisms only work if you are actively trying to get better. Let's say you have a mood disorder, but medication isn't working out for you and is ruining your creative process. The non medication option is Cognitive Behavioral Therapy, which involves you stepping back and analyzing your feelings and seeing things in a new context. It only works for moderate depression or moderate anxiety disorders - the extreme disorders of course require medication.

That said, these are things you work through. The issue with pro shippers and their CSA fics is that it's less about the trauma but more about the fetish. I got immense hate for saying that on Twitter but it's a constant trend: those who suffer from CSA all follow deeply sexualized groups and/or are non binary or trans. It's not rocket science to see why they're writing it.

Now, they'll reference the Jaws effect and how fiction doesn't affect reality, but I stand by 'the medium is the message'. They're creating, above all, content to be consumed. And, over time you will notice their stuff becomes more and more depraved. I have seen pro shippers seriously defend underage ships WITHOUT ageing up characters - as mature fans do, see the ATLA fandom - because it is just fiction.

Many have diagnosed mental illnesses and their coping strategies keep looping around. They aren't getting any help. When I was a teen on the Internet, of course I, like other fanficcers and readers at the time, wrote stupid shit and read smut. We giggled about it. But most of us didn't think about writing softcore CP. Smut was the realm of adults and it was something you graduated into.

We all have fetishes, but at the time, we didn't think about masturbating in women's clothing or chopping off our breasts. People got mighty upset when Zutara didn't become canon - but many more just shrugged it off and wrote their fics. They moved on.

Real person fiction is - well, wow. Dream? He's got tons (until they figure out he's fat. You don't see many fatties in slash fiction). You'll find porn of Rooster Teeth. None of PewDiePie after his 'Nazi' stunt. Hundreds of thousands of Kpop fics.

Those are real people. With real lives. Fiction I understand because those characters don't actually exist. But RP fanfiction isn't a teenager's wetdream anymore: they're often social commentaries on trans rights or whatever. Remember that one guy who allegedly committed suicide after his fic was leaked? The one where Dream skinned a dude's cat and forced another guy to wear it?

That got me thinking. If you are threatening suicide over fanfiction, you have greater problems than public criticism.

You are 100% about the identity thing. These stories are not so much about cope than they are about masturbation. For example, there was a fic where Kylo Ren raped Hylux, and wished he could breed him like a woman. It was a 'Dead Dove, Do Not Eat' fic, but many people, including myself, said we didn't have a problem with problematic fics, but the way this author had wrote it. It was...disrespectful, in a way. Why make it a rape fic when you can make it a gangbang fic where Hylux begs for it? People would like that shit way more.

Yeah that one is so dumb. I have seen it repeated by abused women too who got out of relationships where they were beaten up by their partners who would buy them flowers the next day and tell them they love them. Now, I don't know about you, but you need a lot more than $4000 just to make a few months' worth of rent, electricity, and other bills. She lost her disability and was too lazy to call her social worker to schedule an extension. Se lives in a blue state, not a red one, so you'd think there'd be more options. But no.
