"Protestware" update wipes your disk if you have Russian or Belorussian IP

Christ, this is the kind of shit I only keep as an exaggerated thought in the back of my head, and this retard went ahead and did it for real and fucked over a lot of people that he was supposedly supporting by this stunt. I seriously hope he'll get sued to the point where he will be unemployable, because he's a fucking liability to any potential project he might be working on.

i'd like to point out multiple things about this if it weren't obvious enough. feel free to correct me on any disinformation, it wouldn't even be the first time i've been wrong on kiwi farms TODAY.

1: nigga literally put his full name on this update, didn't even try to conceal his identity. Brandon Nozaki Miller is the name. this means any case thrown against him will stick because it's very clear he broke the law. he's probably in damage control mode try and get a lighter sentence based on his intent.

2: he's now public enemy number 1 across the world. there's no way in hell that this guy is ever going to get a job again, not to mention there are most likely government agencies from other governments like ukraine and russia that are just as pissed off about this as we are, and will most likely pressure the US to do something about this.

3: federal agencies are probably about to crawl up his ass at any second. the CIA and the DOD were most likely using the various databases from said network to get valuable information about the war that their agents could never get on the field. he's most likely going to be arrested and charged by the FBI. he's going to be made an example out of

4: if you're using an NPM, for the love of god update it on segregated hardware before you update it on any databases

again, feel free to correct me on this and maybe add some specific laws he can be charged with

I desperately want you to be right on points 1, 2 and 3 (there's no disputing 4, and in addition this is a great example of why keeping/maintaining package-lock.json with your project(s) is so important), but with as much virtue signaling and pure anti-Russian hatred that's going on worldwide right now, I genuinely worry that this faggot is going to not only get away with it, but will actually be celebrated for it.

Bear in mind he's in California, which is overrun by woke cancer at this point. There's enough dipshits in positions of authority at companies with more money than brains who will cheerfully hire this asshole because he pulled this stunt because "muh Russia bad."

There's enough woke contamination within the federal agencies nowadays that it's probably 50/50 odds whether anyone will even make an official attempt to get a case off the ground, and even if that happens there's plenty of woke glowies willing to torpedo any such effort from within anyway.

And sadly I doubt Russia or Ukraine have the pull or inclination to influence the US government about this either. Russia (for obvious reasons) won't get anywhere with a complaint (the US will laugh in their face) and Ukraine is our whipping boy, not the other way 'round. And they're both pretty distracted with other affairs at the moment anyway.

Who knows, though? Maybe we'll get lucky and they'll nail this prick to the wall. I'd love to see some actual justice done for once.

Shockingly, this whole case somehow seems to be in the process of being swept under the rug right now. I don't see nearly enough response from the media and community to this travesty. This guy should already be shitting himself and he is casually just continuing to lie on github. What in the fuck?

I've seen people are going to the point where anything Russian is being sanitised. Sainsburys recently decided to rename "Chicken Kiev" and pull Russian branded vodkas, and the general sentiment from people aboard this train has been that if it's Russian, it needs to be renamed or removed like an unclean stain. All whilst holding their head high that they're on "the right side of history".

Do they hate the Russian government and their recent actions (for justifiable reason I'll add, like many others, if Putin got assassinated that'd be fine by me), or is this just a hatred of ethnic Russians that is being justified? And as much as people hate the horseshoe theory, is this not the exact same behaviour that they accuse the alt-right of against muslims?

Or shall we just cut the crap and call it what it is. "Russophobia good, Islamophobia bad"?

The MSM definitely has ties and pull with the FBI and police, but I think that they potentially will go through with it anyway. That group in the starting post did say that they were getting the feds involved, so they might be forced to do it regardless.

My main point is that if someone created some kind of virus during the initial war on terrorism, which ended up destroying tons of vital information that the CIA no doubt was tracking and relying on, they would not iust sit back and let the creator be hailed as a hero by the MSM. The CIA would go after his ass.

Civil Action is unlikely because of the warranty clause in pretty much every FOSS license. The software doesn't have any implied functionality and should be considered to be non-functional. At least in the US, these warranty clauses have been upheld.

Criminally... It's possible, but highly unlikely. It would require massively broadening the scope of the CFAA to include retards downloading dodgy source code and not testing it. Most judges probably won't want to touch it because of the implications of such a precedent.

Also source code (as opposed to a compiled executable) is considered protected speech under US law, so this complicates the criminality angle further.

In any case, his career in software is probably done. I just hope people start seriously thinking about the implications of relying on an incomprehensible web of dependencies maintained by under-compensated ideologues.
