Prototype of Nintendo's Dinosaur Planet released

Did people really hate Assault? I can only imagine what the Star Fox fandom is like but the only complaint I heard about it back then was that it was too short. Which it was, it needed at least three more dedicated Arwing levels and a bit more fleshing out for the ground parts. The graphics were exactly what I wanted, did anyone really complain about them? I hated Fox's design after this but here he's just an evolution of the 64 design . The multiplayer music sucked though not gonna lie, but it's made up for by that mode being fun as hell with four people, though I have a suspicion it's a situation like Metroid Prime 2 where the multiplayer mandate took manpower away from the single player.
Basically they were ass mad because it wasn't an exact copy of 64. They didn't like that it wasn't mostly on rails flying levels, and without routes, even though most people take one specific route. And they didn't like the Aparoids because God forbid a Star Fox game doesn't have Andros as the main/ultimate enemy.. When I say an exact copy of 64, I really mean that. Thats all they want. And when they finally got that with 64 3D they still didn't like it.

Assault wasn't prefect by any means, but to me, it the closest thing to an actual evolution for the series, the story, characters and setting were a step up from what SF64 offered, maybe if the game had a couple more rail shooter levels and the ground missions were a bit less repetitive, Assault would have been better received.

You know what, Xenoblade has more dinosaurs and planets than Dinosaur Planet ever did.

Noctilum in XBCX is probably the best glowy night forest in a videogame outside of Ori.

Xenoblade also features Huge T-Rexes, Triceratops, Sauropods, Pterosaurs, and ice age beasts in every installment. it's like if you wanted to improve every aspect of the Original Dinosaur Planet it wouldn't be far off from what Xenoblade actually is. Outside of what some poeple hate about the Xenoblade combat.

Assault was a major evolution in gameplay for the series (the same way Metroid Prime was for it's franchise), but the bulk of the fans just didn't care. They didn't like the directional changes the rail levels had, they didn't like the complex environment of the ground levels, or the variety of weapons offered, the objective changes as the level progresses, or the cool ability to hop in and out of vehicles at will. They didn't like the lack of level branches, which is hilarious since most people only play, maybe two, branches in 64 and that's it (except for competitive players who want a high score on something like Titania, Bolse, or Sector Z. I'm not even sure if they liked the cut scenes or the music. All they cared is that it wasn't an exact copy of SF64 but with updated graphics.

Basically the bulk of the fandom is the Star Fox equivalent to Genwunners, while kids who played Adventures back in 2002 were/are something of an equivalent to Hoennfags (but less numerous). And then the rest are furries just there for the porn while kinda sorta pretending to be fans.

How? :stress:

Of all things, they complained about that?, i mean, not liking the ground missions?, i can understand, not liking the lack of route selection? i can understand, but no liking the camera (and most likely, the location changes) in the rail levels? just look at the very first level in Assault

That's as perfect as a rail shooter game can get, the music is epic, enemy ships are exploding left and right, the camera changes add to the spectacle, to emphasize how the player is taking down several large battleships and to show the scale of the battle that's taking place, when you find Oikonny, he flees to fortuna and you follow him right behind, it almost feels like completely different mission, you go trough a forest, eventually reach an enemy base, and finally face 2 bosses in a row.

If Star Fox fans didn't like those improvements, then Assault was doomed from the start.

As a big fan of the original Star Fox and 64 I politely disagree. I rented Assualt and mildly enjoyed it but had no need to ask my parents to buy me a copy,

For me Star Fox represented groundbreaking tech for games. Yes there was a lot more stuff going on in the PCs and Arcades but I was a mere console peasant, Star Fox 1 was the only game I had for a long time that had true 3D with polygons and all that cool stuff. Also the game still holds up remarkably to this day, a big reason I'd argue being its tremendous music.

Star Fox 64 was not as big (I already knew about Playstation) but since it was still an early N64 game I remember the visuals just being jawdropping gorgeous. Oh and that Rumble Pak, such a cool feature.

I was left underwhelmed by Adventures and Assualt because they just weren't top of the line games at release the way the prior entries were. This is largely due to Nintendo no longer being the dominant Game Marker they were in the 90s. Assualt was cool, but it wasn't Halo. With Star Wars Rogue Squadron 2 being a huge GameCube launch exclusive that game actually felt like the GameCube's equivalent to a Star Fox 3.

When I saw this headline I though it like a game made after the movie "Dinosaur Planet". I was disappointed.

I mean it wouldn't be surprising in the slightest if it were true. Croc was developed by Argonaut Games which were the dudes who made the technology for Star Fox and Star Fox 2, which if I remember right was originally cancelled because Miyamoto got mad that it might make Star Fox 64 look less impressive.
It was actually the N64 in general. They wanted a clean break with the SNES/Genesis being 2D tech and the new N64 being 3333333333DDDDDDDDDDD. Unfortunately the N64 suffered enough delays that they really could have got the totally finished SF2 out in time to launch, sell and be forgotten before the nexgen launch. We did eventually get it on SNES Classic, that's a far better fate than most of these lost projects receive.

So about that gay discord drama, enjoy some cringe kino from Damien. (fuck off Damien, no one likes you, Damien)

So, since this thing is still getting reacts, time for an update. After a week its raised 70 pounds, so a little over 100 dollars. Not to shit on the Samaritans, but thats 70 pounds they shouldn't have been getting.

A little late but just found out about the leak.
It's kind of interesting how similar this version is despite the story and level differences.
Another interesting thing is how early Fox displaced Sabre from the story during development and how General Scales was always set up as being a red herring pawn.
It seems there are people working on fixing the prototype
They even inserted Sabre back in.

If there's ever a patched version that's fully playable I'd love to give this a spin. The only big ones missing for N64 now are Earthbound 64 and the original version of Conker's Bad Fur Day.
Rare is sitting on a partially complete copy. They say it's an early build, but I don't know if I entirely believe that given how long they'd been working on it and how close it was to release date when it was quietly cancelled.
The closest thing to having a completed version is Pocket Tales, which was rushed, unfortunately, and is basically an incomplete version of what they had planned for the N64.

Because the seller either didn't want these out there or wanted a bunch of time to pass first and instead they released the very first one they got, possibly before the money was wired.
I'm still mad about this. Who was the one who screwed it up? The proto communities patted their ass and told me it was "water under the bridge" and to "drop it". They should've been banned for messing that up.

Oh, and if you knew who did it what would you do about it? The "community" is spread across a number of discords and private chats now anyway since Assembler Games is dead and Obscure Gamer is shiiiiiiiiiit so bans are impossible.

Just throwing this out there but the game actually shipped with two different games on the same car, a regular GB game and a GBC version. If you've only ever played the color one you should plug it into a regular Gameboy (or regular Gameboy emulator with Gameboy selected instead of GBC) and enjoy the alternate levels and puzzles.

edit: Or, since you seem to have up and left at random one day, you could ask God to lend you his copy up in heaven or the warden to in prison, which ever you are in currently?

It's been a while, I wonder if the ROM hackers made any progress with this yet.

Nah, I wouldn't do anything. I just think that info should be out there so that no one trusts them with such information in the future. I would also just like to know the full story of what happened out of curiosity.

Honestly, I don't remember who it was. There was a lot of extremely retarded Discord drama coming out of OG at the time and this was part of that. All I could gather from reading those debates was "hang em all."
