The PS3, PS Vita, and PlayStation Portable stores aren’t long for this world. According to a source familiar with the situation (verified by TheGamer), the stores are due to be closed down from July. The announcement is planned for the end of this month.

PSP’s and PS3’s stores are to be closed on July 2, while the PS Vita store will stay open until August 27. After those dates, you will no longer be able to purchase digital copies of games or DLC for any of the Sony consoles mentioned above.

The PS3 released in November 2006 and sold a total of 87 million units during its lifetime. The console officially ended production four years ago after 11 successful years on the market and three model redesigns. The PSP enjoyed similar success, selling around 81 million units since its release in March 2005.

Notoriously, the PS Vita was a bit of a flop. Sony’s second handheld released in December 2011 and sold between 10-15 million units across its lifetime, despite being an excellent little machine. The handheld recently saw some resurgence in popularity, thanks to how easy it is to turn into a portable emulator.

If you own any of the three consoles and you’ve always wanted to download a specific game, now is the time. No doubt the price of physical games will jump up once the stores cease to exist.

The success of the Nintendo Switch proves that there's a market for portable consoles these days, so perhaps one day we'll see Sony have another shot at a handheld. We might get a Doom game where you talk to the monsters first, but you never know.

Boy am I glad I got into emulation last year, but seriously fuck game companies constantly pulling this shit, man. No backwards compatibility on PS4/PS5 for physical disks of older games and no/limited digital versions of PS1/PS2/PS3 games on PSN. Here's hoping RPCS3 improves some more in the future :optimistic:

Sony has become such a shit company since moving their HQ to California. They spout lefty talking points constantly on all their social media, and PlayStation continues to shit on anyone who doesn't exist to consoom their new consoles.

Say what you will about Microsoft, but at least they're trying to keep the Xbox user friendly by making as much as they can backwards compatible, as well as making everything available on both PC and console.

For curiosity sake, I checked.

According to this site:
As of April 2020, RPCS3 has been able to play over 50% of the PS3 library from start to finish. The emulator is capable of running over 1,000 games at a playable speed with no major glitches[5], though it requires very demanding hardware on most games. On June 2018 after a few improvements and fixes, at least most PlayStation 1 Classic titles became playable. Currently, only the PSN versions work (No PS1 discs are able to be loaded in-game yet).

On RPCS3's own site:

The most recent games that have been tested:

Isn't it extremely easy to hack those consoles nowadays? I remember the vita exploit using the browser was a godsend, and I have a vague recollection of something similar for the ps3.

The article in question has been circulating, but there's no evidence at this point that they're going to do this.

The article also mentions the PSP store closing, that happened back in 2016. When the PSP store closed it got compacted in with the Vita and you could still use the Desktop store to purchase games if you did not have a vita.

Now the old desktop store supposedly went away last year, but no you can still access it and use it. Sony has said nothing on closing the PS3 or Vita stores for the consoles and if they were to close it, it would wind up breaking a ton of things due to how everything is linked to the store. It sounds very unreasonable unless they're doing another patch to fix it(and they have released a few patches for both the PS3 and Vita within the last year). Currently PSNow is heavily linked with PS3 servers and other backend stuff, closing the store would fuck with that service heavily.

More than likely they're just going to kill the last remnants of the old desktop store which will affect nothing on consoles if there's any truth to this article at all.

I saw this on GBATemp too. It was said to be a rumor. But I wouldn't doubt it's true either.

My Playstation account doesn't work for some reason. I can't log in at all. I think it's because the email went inactive and was deleted/closed. Do I have to make a new account?

I had no idea the PSP store was still up. I didn't use mine much. I still have it.

You can call sony's tech support for account related issues. It doesn't take much to make a new account though. The system can save the login information from the last time you logged into PSN.

I have my PS library on a memory card, and backed up, so its not like I'm concerned about losing the games I own. I'm just sad that a lot of great classics will become even less available than they were. I still sometimes discover "That game's on Vita!?" The Vita was great for games these companies stopped caring about, like Mega Man Legends and Legend of Dragoon, which unless you're emulating, have the PS1 discs, or a Vita, can't be played/bought. Games that've been abandoned for multiple console generations, with no sign of ever being re-released or remembered.
