Hey all. Guy with Asperger's here. I have a lot of experience on the topic so I hope I can help.

Why is it harder for females to get diagnosed with autism?

Being female, human interaction (socialising, sex, relationships, everything) is way way easier even if she is ugly and has awkward socializing skills. Everyone both men and women would rather interact with a woman given the choice unless the guy is super hot. It's called the "women are wonderful effect". Everyone loves women. Men, not so much.

So that means you could have autistic young women with boyfriends and a huge circle of friends and a busy social life compared to autistic young men who have virtually nothing in life other than their computing degree and Minecraft world. Guess which one the parents will have concerns over and take for an appointment to get checked over?

What problems do women with it face that guys (usually) don't?

If you can call this a "problem" take into consideration the fact amongst people with autism males wayyy outnumber females. At any residential or day drop in centre for people on the autism spectrum for those who need a little extra help, it wouldn't be unusual to see 10-15 guys for every girl.

Now consider the fact a lot of these guys will have no gf, but still have a sex drive like everyone else (unless they have been prescribed a sexdrive-killing anti-depressant which often happens). Know what this means for the girls? No matter how unattractive they are they will be wwamped with attention from guys who are (no offence intended) often tend to be less attractive on average than neurotypical guys and have awkward social skills who are all drooling with desparation at the thought of her being their gf. These centres are like Tindr for women only the ratio of M:F is even bigger and it's guys you most likely wouldn't want to date, but could be a fun friend if you want an hour lecture on windmill facts (or whatever their special interest/obsession is which we tend to have).

Finally, the absolute cheek of you to presume that having a bunch of guys trying to get in your pants is a good thing for a straight girl. Because the men judge you by how many partners you've had, and a lot of them are there just to get their peen wet, and they're fucking sexists projecting their shame; so each liaison for a woman is a gamble. I think it's both. Males tend to be more prone to autism spectrum disorders and also tend to express them in ways that are seen as disruptive and as a problem to be diagnosed.

I think males are more likely to be diagnosed as autistic when they are and more likely to be misdiagnosed as autistic for either normal behavior or behavior associated with some other disorder, while females are both less likely to be autistic and less likely to be diagnosed as such when they are.

Cool thread. I've never been diagnosed nor would I ever try to get diagnosed but I have been called autistic before. And maybe I do have a bit of the tism idk. If it's genetic it may be relevant that my dad is very into trains.

Somewhere earlier in the thread someone was negrated for saying high IQ can be mistaken for autism. I suspect that might be true. I also suspect it would be easier to say that you're weird/saying weird shit because you're autistic than because you are really smart. Anyone with an ounce of social skills knows you're never allowed to say that you're really smart even tho smart people often do have problems due to their condition, such as relating with others.

For myself, when I get caught out being weird...I know I'm smart but I don't know if I'm really smart, but I definitely don't want to say I'm autistic, so I just say that I'm retarded.
