I know more about Montgomery’s fuckups than DeGaulle, but it was the same shit. At the time there was a big stink over Americans being the ones to liberate major cities - it HAD to be French troops that took back their country. But see there just weren’t that many, which resulted in American forces being told to halt so the French could arrive and take credit. It ain’t an issue of glory for me, but let’s just say the Iron Curtain would have been significantly further east if Eisenhower had told Monty and DeGaulle to fuck off.
De Gaulle was the archetypal French dickhead bar none. He would downplay American involvement in WW2 as much as possible, ceded Algeria to terrorists even though it was considered an integral part of France, and essentially withdrew from NATO after he got called out on the Suez crisis. He built up the French position in the Cold War as essentially "le enlightened centrist" for the longest time as a result with the frogs not even being in the actual NATO structure until 2005 even though we rebuilt their entire economy after it got looted by the Nazis because god forbid the french have sone humility and gratitude and that's without getting into the shitshow that was Vietnam (granted I dont know how involved he was there).
He was also the type of guy that didn't understand saying whatever is on your mind as a world leader, ALA Trump and Kaiser Wilhelm ll, makes you a foreign policy disaster. As opposed to a strong man "saying it like it is" He almost lost support from the Allies multiple times during the war because of that behaviour. A pretty iconic post-war example is his Vive Le Quebec Libre (liberate Quebec) speech. Where on his trip to Canada he started in Quebec and destroyed diplomatic relations with Canada just because he felt like it. He started his trip off with a speech about how Quebec should secede; then canceled the rest of his trip and meeting with Canada's PM, and flew his ass back to France when the rest of the country didn't like him for doing that very much. Then just one year later went on to oppress nationalist movements in Britanny. Amusingly Canada's would-be Prime Minister Pierre Trudeau stated at the time "I wonder how the French people would feel if the Canadian Prime Minister said "Britanny for Bretons.""
