Plagued /r/TNOmod and the Reddit HOI4 modding community - When a subreddit for a video game mod turns to utter insanity

  • 🐕 I am attempting to get the site runnning as fast as possible. If you are experiencing slow page load times, please report it.
Problem is dev teams that are "right wing and based" or whatever have the same issues since they would rather spend their time shitposting racist memes all day rather than actually work on the mod.
its funny the brony mod is the most stable and productive hoi4 mod
Bronies have an actual universe to go off I guess, and aren't autistically alt-history-ing their favorite/most hated ideology.

I feel like a lot of it boils down to it being harder to go "well my personal interpritation of Wikipedia is X".
You see the same thing with the Fallout mod OWB. It similarly gives fans an overall direction, while still instructing them to "color within the lines" so to speak,, and because it's already a fictional setting you filter out a lot of the people that just want to write real-life political fanfiction, and keep only the handful of people that know how to adapt their autism to the setting, I don't know if "let's create a super computer that wants to create a perfect robocommunism" is someone's beliefs or not, but I don't care, because that feels like an appropriate plot for a Fallout game. On the flipside, "people in a political movement I like takes over a country and create an utopia" is always going to come off as literally that to most people, and that's why "historical" mods are ironically filled with a lot more half-baked fanfiction turned into quarter-baked gameplay.

Exceptions exist, I'm sure, but there are many good reasons why the Fallout and MLP mods don't get dragged through the dirt here or on the 4chan thread for that matter, compared to other mods. Honestly, I think that if the devs of mods like TNO and KR were just a smidge more capable of distancing themselves from their real life beliefs they'd be able to create better propaganda than what they currently art as most functional adults don't like being beaten over the head with blatant propaganda.

Ultimately, people are looking for interesting scenarios to expand the game. "What if the Axis won WW2" is fundamentally interesting in a war game because of the resulting geostrategic results, not the political effects.

That's what made TNO popular, and why the current focus of everything on political theater in a wargame fails.

I disagree. What made TNO popular wasn't just the basic concept and premise (we've had many similar after all), but it's execution as well. The unique and interesting people, the many ways things could turn, and how the extreme extremes made the more grounded content stand our. Especially since the universe was structured in a way where the crazy stuff could coexist with the normal stuff just fine in most cases.

Fast forward a few years and they deleted almost all of that in the interest of being closer to our timeline. There was a lot of fun to the original way of doing it, warts and all. Now most of that is either gone or slated to be deleted and replaced with nothing at all. That's how you got something akin to a cultural phenomenon within a subgenre, and how that was all pissed away by the most uncreative autists on the planet.

why is hoi4 modding so cursed
Big overhaul mods and fangames in general are cursed, not just HOI4.

See the big Fallout NV/4 mods ending up either abandoned, permanent hiatus (effectively abandoned), or just being generally lolcow-tier shit like NV's Frontier mod. A lot of the modding drama there tend to be on pair with HOI4 mods like TrooNO if not even more so since those games are way more normie accessible.

It's a miracle that Skyrim's modding community is the only one that actually has had a few (relatively okay) overhaul mods come out with little to no gay Discord dramas to note. Sure there's cringy coomer follower mods but for the most part, 'big overhaul' mods like Falskaar are pretty okay for what they are.

I think it's because of a lack of financial incentive. While so many people love to talk about 'we gotta make vidya out of passion and heart' idealism, I think there's a lot of drive to be had when you're actually making your own commercial product from the ground up since you know you'll make some amount of money off of it. Mods don't have these luxuries since they're piggy-backing off of an existing game, so it's almost impossible to monetize it and therefore a lot of motivation is killed off.

Unless Paradox creates their own equivalent of Todd Howard's Creation Club where modders can be 'paid' to do their work, you're going to have to rely on these 'will do it for free' people who have a lot of time on their hands... Which often happens to be trannies since they often don't have a real life and therefore have all the time in the world to fuck around with mods to not even care about money.

im actually a big fan of the owb mod mostly because of the fallout lore but I like that it doesnt try to shoehorn in the creators personal politics.

The only modding community I've seen that doesn't devolve to complete shit instantly is niche wargames (Strategic Command, Warplan, War in the X, etc). Most mods are cosmetic or done to make it more autistic, and being that the modders are usually 65+ on a pension and have a little knowledge of computers they are more focused on making the game exactly how they like it, modifying every single variable to their exact taste. Or it's balancing for multiplayer PBEM. The autism is focused onto the game itself and they only communicate in forums that allow the use of a thumbs up emoji.

There are so many completely insane Russian alt history novels.
I forget if they're from here or some Twitter thread but I have a bunch of random cover images of this stuff. They're pretty much all in the category of "retired spetznatz guy goes back in time and makes Russia great again"; there's actually a Russian term for that kind of char: "попаданец". It's apparently extremely insulting and nearly untranslateable.

Why can't HOI4 modding autists make mods based off this shit? That'd be something enjoyable to play from the covers alone.
