It's been said indirectly a lot, but basically Chris does believe this shit, but not involuntarily. It (probably? hopefully?) isn't a real mental defect. He does believe this shit, and he his willingly hallucinating it, but they aren't delusions that are going to harm him or act against him, and he can, if he wants, turn them off whenever he wants.
This is all his imagination, but the thing is, when you daydream, you eventually go "that was a nice daydream, too bad it's not real" (which someone else said in another thread). Chris actively doesn't do that last bit, he's convincing himself this stuff is real. It won't hurt him, but it's certainly not going to help him.
It's like, well, me and alcohol. I'm not an alcoholic, I'm not going to relapse and have a seizure because I'm not drinking. But that doesn't mean I don't drink like a fish every night because I'm bored and hate living. It's the same for Chris, his imagination is his alcohol.
