Why shouldn't Chris be nonchalant about it? He will be just fine. He's not going to be one of the people suffering and dying. The whole point of the merge is to finally have the universe provide Chris with everything he DESERVES: riches, power, authority, control, admiration, and all the ponies and hedgehog abominations to butt-fuck that Chris can handle. Chris gets everything he wants and if a couple billion people have to suffer and die, or even disappear from existence entirely, then it will totally be worth it.
