I really had no idea autism could be so debilitating. I was under the impression it just caused a severe lack of self awareness and an inability to connect with others.

This is true, but most people with autism learn to engage with the world. For instance, while you might not instinctively understand social interaction, you can learn it intellectually, through experience or being taught. An autistic person who is considered reasonably high-functioning, like Phil, should be perfectly capable of living as an adult. Unfortunately, Phil is a selfish, spoilt brat who'd rather go for the immediate low-effort path in life. If he loses friends through his behaviour, he just moves on to the next group rather than attempt to mend his ways. As a result, we have a man who is 33 and hasn't developed mentally since the age of 13, still trying to impress people with childish fantasies.

I don't think rent and bills were the draw for phil.
Before the two "hooked up" phil was following Toren on social media and it's fair to assume that Phil thought given the following of trans ethics he was going to bag himself a new Greta or Jordman, someone with some clout in the Trans community who Phil use to feed his thirst for influence and position, sort of an e-version of transway.
Toren was pretty well known in his community as a scamming scum bag, Phil was pretty much warned of this by Toren's ex galpal but for reasons choose to ignore it.
At the very least he thought Toren would signal boost his bullshit and give his activism a shoot out to his twitter follows.
Tried to work a scam, not scammed.
Once Toren was in phils tried to spin the story of him saving Toren and how the trans community should support him back blah blah social embargo blah blah radical paraxis but reputation proceeded them both an no one gave a shit.

I've paid less attention to Phil for the past year than I have in about a decade, and I can't say that I'm surprised in the slightest that nothing's changed aside from the apparent acorn removal.

Sometimes I do feel a bit of pity for Phil, but only for a minute or two until I realize what an asshole is. The thing is, he and Toren absolutely deserve each other. I'm sure they both went into it somehow thinking they could get something out of it. The thing is, neither has anything of value. They're both leeches, and Phil's a bit of a hoarder. And just like any hoarder, he has crap that will never be worth anything. All his pleather bondage gear and rainbow baseball bats aren't even worth the money he originally paid for them!
The thing is, when you have two losers who are virtual pariahs amongst the trans community getting together, neither of them will help the other get better. In fact they probably make things worse. People who don't like Toren now have an excuse to avoid Phil, and others who might feel sorry for him can pretend he has a friend so they don't have to get involved. In the end it's worse for both of them!
Actually part of me is amazed that he got this far. I mean, here's a 30 something autistic guy with no gender dysphoria who literally chopped off his dick because he bought into the social justice crap and wanted to stick it to a bunch of strangers on the internet. It's a sign of our times that nobody would intervene, but hey, regret is already setting in. I honestly hope he doesnt commit suicide once the reality of this sets in. His life hasn't gotten any better, he didn't even get any acknowledgement from the trans community, we just laughed at him, and he still can't ride a bicycle. LOL
