Let's examine the primary political bias of old Christory: 2000s/Bush-era populist conservatism.
I think the alt-right wasn't really as common then as it was now, and the liberal left was more populist then than it was now. And a lot of social issues were much more bipartisan than today.
Consider that many people on the internet were finding themselves by finding fellow atheists who agree that the bible is hokum. Many of these people were outwardly liberal, yet would be canceled and find themselves shifting right as the religious right of the 2000s lost prominence and evolution was no longer as much of a hot-button topic. Also consider that tech was seen as a liberal industry, obesity and nonstandard grammar associated with Southern republicans, and both republican and democrat people would criticize people for the lack of a job.
Let's keep that last point in mind, and to stop exposition, call it "bootstrapism."
Clyde Cash and others were notoriously boostrapist. They were incredibly dismissive of Chris' case for being on SSDI, and would often compare his case to people who "had it worse" but still had to struggle to find work just to pay for painkillers that made it somewhat bearable as their conditions got worse – which really says more about the system being inadequate than Chris stealing a proverbial spot from them.
Clyde even would say that Chris isn't truly autistic – and people back then would hear "autism" and still think "low IQ " – but I think there's many reasons why Chris can't, and shouldn't have a job.
Classic Chris struggled with the "common sense" of pragmatic language, misinterprets people, and may not be able to follow through. He struggles with basic hygiene, not for laziness, but because of this lack of follow through. He may constantly screw up orders or even risk more. He may make coworkers feel uncomfortable inadvertently. Since the disorder comes with motor coordination problems and hypotonia, jobs requiring constant lifting are out. So are engineering jobs, seeing that CWC has impaired spatial reasoning.
Now, that doesn't mean that all autistic people are incapable of finding work. Nor does it mean that those other people succeeding in the tech industry or as air traffic controllers mean that Chris has no "excuse." Every case is different.
A lot of these people on the CWCki and in Christory in this era seem to view Chris and other SSDI cases for autism as a strain on the government. Yet, quite frankly, this gov't probably spent significantly more money on developing drones to bomb civilians in foreign countries, send people to countries that merely happen to be in the same region as Al-Qaeda or ISIS, fight wars now that those countries have been further radicalized against the US, set up border control in areas that used to involve people going freely between the US and Canada/Mexico, put people away for "stolen valor" or "flag desecration", extend copyright duration and arrest emulator users, allow Musk to divert funds from NASA and high-speed rail for his failed passion projects, and tax breaks for billionaires who could pay every autistic tugboat with one percent of their income.
The Kacey father call was interesting since it shows that certain conservatism in full swing. Those two characters were looking for every reason to fault Chris for "not working," including getting the minimum wage "wrong" when Chris mentioned the state minimum wage of VA when they should have known the federal minimum wage. Not to mention faulting Chris for bringing up Patti's death when discussing grief, as if it's unhealthy to grieve a dog – I count this since Christianity often teaches that humans were a separate creation from animals. It's VERY common to grieve a canine friend as if they were a close human family member, or to not feel as much grief around a more distant relative like Aunt Corrina who Chris did not see as often.
After Bob's death, Modern Chris expressed her identity more openly, but the CWCki takes the side of the so-called truscum when presenting the issue as especially controversial. It denies that she may have a harder time getting employment now. Well, she's in rural Virginia! And still, she'd be a poor fit for customer service work or anything demanding regular performance.
I think another theme of the CWCki and bootstrapism is the admonishment of CWC's obesity. They always throw in the jabs here and there or bring up entire articles about it. I think a lot of people connect health to morality – the same thing Chris did for smokers – or think that Chris's obesity is in any way a reflection on their general character. It's a fallacious line of reasoning that connects health – obesity is bad for you – to character – obesity is for bad people. And the entire autism article is a laundry list of controversies in psychiatry – is the theory of mind hypothesis accurate, or is the double empathy problem plus differences in basal mental processing a better explanation? Is true empathy mandatory to be a compassionate person?
Then there's copyright... Chris is hardly the only person out there making fan work! And the CWCki implies that it would be fair to see it all censored!
