Every film industry does this. Literally every single one. Look at some of the things Japan has made with American properties such as Spiderman, or the eastern european ripoffs of things like Russia's Winnie Pooh.

The old controversy over Legend of Korra was proof of that. It ends with her setting off with a character she's barely friends with, head writer made some huge Tumblr post about those two are in a relationship and anyone who doesn't see it has their "Hetronormative goggles" on too tight, and then Tumblr went on witch hunts about people hating this beautiful show for a while. In reality it was a desperate move to give a failing show attention and to this day the series is only known for ending with interracial lesbians...off-screen.
