What the... Are people actually stupid enough to do this?

Yes. See, atoning for your own sins is uncomfortable, embarrassing, and comes with an acknowledgment that you haven't been a good person; people may recognize that you've done the right thing, but it's still before them that you did something wrong.

On the other hand, huge, dramatic shows of "atonement" for sins someone else committed? You get all the recognition that you've done a "good" thing, without the part where you did anything wrong, and you get an extra side order of pointing the finger and being better than those other people over there for whose mess you have to clean up. And since crucifixion is so two thousand years ago, all you have to do is shed a few tears and wear a stupid t-shirt.
