But the gender binary is pretty universal, even outside of the West?
I don't even
Technically, some cultures have "third genders," but from what I've read they're closer to enforced societal roles than personal identities. I don't think the people who get assigned those genders actually have much say in the matter, if any.
(Please note that I might well have my info wrong--I'm speaking from memory here and I might be misinformed anyway. If anyone knows better than me here, please do correct me.)
I do think (some) nonbinary gender identities are valid; like I've mentioned before, I know plenty of nonbinary people who experience real, legitimate dysphoria and don't feel even remotely comfortable being thought of as either male
or female. Of course, as with everything, Tumblr goes overboard.
(TL;DR: Nonbinary identities can be valid, but the gender binary is far from a solely Western thing and a lot of cultures are far more rigid with gender stuff than ours. Also, Tumblr is full of fuckwits.)
And that dovetails nicely with something I've been thinking about, which is that for all Tumblr culture is quick to cry "OMFG ABLEISM!!!!!!!!!!!11" at anything and everything, a lot of the ridiculous made-up pronoun sets are actually really difficult for people with certain disabilities.
Like...speaking as an Actual IRL Autistic Shitlord here, I find it incredibly hard to keep up when someone changes their pronouns. Like, even if it's a valid change (i.e. "I just came out as FTM, and I'd like you to use masculine pronouns for me from now on" or what have you), it's a tricky thing for me to adjust to because I'm too spergy to cope with change all that well, but when someone picks an arbitrary new pronoun set every now and then for no discernable reason, it becomes damn near impossible. (Frankly, I'd assume it'd be tricky even for neurotypical people.) And that's not even delving into people with learning disabilities like dyslexia or non-native English speakers, who are gonna have a (rather understandably) difficult time parsing ridiculous pronouns. </rant>
And on a related note, my "deadself" follower is now using a different ridiculous name and "starself" pronouns:
