Those edited Nicki Minaj headshots really show that in her core, Rory DOES have some talent that could've blossomed into some pretty cool character art stuff. But she chooses to draw things as ugly and malformed as possible because she thinks it's more progressive this way or some bullshit.

I guess no one's posted it yet, and I was curious what the art people here think of Rory's short film that was done for school. It does not feature deformed fetishized monstrosities or weird cheekbones and is actually sorta cute, fortunately. It looks overly simple and lazy to me though. I'm wondering how I'd feel about it if I didn't read through this thread, haha.

y'know what? i actually like it. the lack of human faces makes it look significantly less awkward than rory's normal stuff. the fact that the characters are in fact just meant to be made of shapes rather than being humanoid uncanny valley abominations is actually working with the new art style rory's adopted.
can't wait to see how she fucks it up in the future

WELL THERE IT IS. of course a short film themed around a gay relationship would be fine, (in fact could be really nice if done right) but this is rory we're talking about. i can't wait to see big-tittied and totally not fetishized trans men in motion!

i don't even know anymore. nearly everything rory makes looks like a fucked up mishmash of shapes. she can't draw realistically or even draw without stylizing the fuck out of everything even when it shouldn't be stylized

I agree that the "Moon Sprouts" short looks lazy, the obvious copy-pasta shots of the astronaut planting the sprouts being the worst of it outside of the really bland moon surface. The only detail there was were the pile of wrecked spaceships, everything else was too blobby and simplified (the rocket ship, even though there was a nice instance of it having a three-dimensional appearance, looks like a deformed breast to me).
I get it that it was easier to animate that way, but you'd think for an animation project, that will be put in a future demo reel, that she'd put more effort into it. There was more effort put into the "Above" short film, and the animation is also smoother. There's also much more of a heartfelt thanks there, no " thank you, calarts " like in Rory's. Did no one else help her or give her support with that short film?

Yeah, I admit I don't know if it is a fair comparison to make. I included it since it was something Rory retweeted from a fellow first-year and I was surprised at the difference (and subsequently the fact that it has a lot less likes/retweets than Rory's film tweet does). I'm pleasently suprised by this year Cal Arts films - there is variety of styles and many of shorts don't have that calarts style.
